Stella Mare's Ratings and Reviews
A co-worker is getting ready to retire, so I wanted to treat her to something unique. Stella Mare’s never disappoints. Lunch in the atrium is the perfect combination - relaxed elegance! The food is delicious, the wine list is great, the cocktails are imaginative - what’s not to love?
Great Evening. We returned the following day, for lunch, with Dr. Ellioitt Breslar and we were
part of his party of seven people. We live in Burbank but wouldn't think of visiting
Santa Barbara with visiting Stella Mare's. Can assure you that in Burbank there's not a restaurant that's a close second to your wonderful restaurant. We recommend Stella Mare to
anyone visiting Santa Barbara. Believe the first time we visited "SM" was in April 1996, when
we moved (after 40 years) of living in New York City.

Menu options are a bit limited, especially brunch, and very similar to Cafe Stella's. Just about everything used cream and butter. The Mimosa drinks (orange or pineapple at $10) should use fresh real juice and not from a plastic or can container - it's such a small drink and this makes a difference! Waiter was intrusive (even out of place with personal questions, and speaking in Spanish thereafter just because we seemed to understand him). Another waiter pretending he knew Italian and French words but just speaking in Spanish with Italian and French accents. It was laughable, not sure if he did it to amuse, but it was a bit ridiculous. More staff training perhaps? Other staff were straight to business and paying more attention to what was actually needed. Glad to see the restaurant is open though and we went to support them and used the Axxess card. But we wouldn't go there to dine again.
Stella’s is always our favorite place to dine in Santa Barbara. We were celebrating our anniversary with good friends and I had the filet mignon special that was the best filet I have ever had! Roth, the chef, is a culinary genius! Service was excellent as usual.
Stella Mare’s has that food that you constantly crave and dream of. Mussels and French fries, French onion soup, perfect oak grilled artichoke. And those are only the starters! Then on to the filet, the sole, cassoulet with duck confit... absolutely delicious heart warming cuisine combined with a comforting atmosphere and attentive yet unobtrusive service. An A+ experience
every time. ***tip-whatever is on the special menu is amazing and creative! A must order!
Have been a fan of Stella Mare for over a decade and it's reliable for providing pleasant ambiance, good food, and at lunchtime Angel is attentive, remembering the preferences we have, as well as special requests. Yesterday the trout was excellent, the green beans on the side were fresh and perfectly cooked, the sweet potatoes were pureed, the bread and butter provided before the meal and the coffee is exceptional. The clientele demographic is a little older and they know good food and value. There are two separate areas of the restaurant -see which one you prefer. Ask Angel what happened to his mustache?
Stella Mare is one of the most frustrating restaurants I have been to and I am not sure why I keep going back.
The service, at best, is always spotty and the food is inconsistent.
My partner’s grilled yellowtail seemed to please him; my filet mignon was cold and dry upon arrival.
The wine choices by the glass are limited and somewhat overpriced, even by Santa Barbara standards.
Perhaps the reason we go back is that is easy to find a reservation at just about any time, if there is no “event” going on.
Whatever the reason, we left dissatisfied and disappointed.
Four of us went out to celebrate a birthday. We had requested a quiet table, and our request was granted. Room was a bit noisy at first, but quieted down when boisterous group left. Petrale sole entree was delicious as was tomato bisque soup. Flourless chocolate desert was memorable too. All of us raved over the fois gras. Service was mostly quick and amiable, although server initially forgot our order for sparkling water and bread arrived late. Have dined here many times over the years, and have always had a positive experience.
We really enjoyed it, great spot! Food was awesome, service great. Only nit was although it was pretty empty when we arrived (early 6 PM reservation), hostess kind of jammed us in the corner next to a other occupied tables. Could have spaced us out a bit. But other than that everything was really great!
My wife Julie and I love Stella Mare's! We go there each and every time that I sell a home. We each get a Burger (she gets the Stella Burger and I get the Los Patos (the Duck) Burger.) with fries. They are always great and we enjoy them with a great bottle of red wine. The food is always great, the ambiance very nice, and Carol (our go-to server) is fantastic. We had another dining experience last week! We look forward to going again soon!
I went to Stella Mare thinking it was Italian food based on the name, but it turns out it is French. The decor is French country, which is not my taste. The chairs were uncomfortable with no lumbar support. The steaks were all cooked perfectly and the sauces were good, but not outstanding.
We had a lovely Thanksgiving Meal at Stella Mare's. It is beautiful with all the lights driving up in the early evening. The setting is comfortable, but the staff is quite professional and top notch. Our Thanksgiving meal was delicious, even though it was a familiar set of ingredients for the day. The kitchen must have been cranking out identical plates for hours. Desert was a perfect size, and I got a good cappacino.
My family and I were traveling at the Thanksgiving weekend and were looking for a nice place to eat a traditional Thanksgiving meal and Stella Mares was perfect. Great selection of food, great service and excellent atmosphere. We ate outside and it was a great day and relaxing. I would definitely go back.
Went for lunch. Absolutely charming place. Food only so so, but we'd still go back and try again with different dishes. French onion soup was fair, mushroom soup wax divine. Seared tuna salad wasn't all that tasty, nor a salmon pasta. Lunch steak and burger were good.
I lived in France and Belgium. This is exceptional! One step above a brasserie (which is French for "good restaurant with a full bar and uncomfortable chairs") yet a step below a 5-Star, over-priced gastronomy menu but the food is perfect. Everything was impeccably prepared, service was textbook-attentive, yet not pushy. No snobbery here, just a fantastic night out and we will return. My only disappointment was the very limited French wine selection. Apparently locals are die-hard Cali wine fans. However a $20 corkage guarantees I bring my own Margaux or Montepulciano next time and share with the staff.
Our dinner for 3 had 3 outstanding entrees and 3 excellent first courses. The waitpersons were industrious and tried hard, but something slowed the service to a near halt. We were told that the lamb took 25 minutes; but that surely shouldn't mean 25 minutes from the time we FINISHED our appetizers. Next time we will emphasize the fact that we are headed to a concert.
I chose this restaurant based on a particular item on their online Sunday brunch menu. After we were seated I asked the waiter and he informs us that they haven't had this dish for 3 years! I told him they need to update their website and he says a lot of other folks have had similar complaints but the owner will not update it. Very disappointing. I feel this is false advertising.
