Stella Mare's Ratings and Reviews
My wife Julie and I love Stella Mare's! We go there each and every time that I sell a home. We each get a Burger (she gets the Stella Burger and I get the Los Patos (the Duck) Burger.) with fries. They are always great and we enjoy them with a great bottle of red wine. The food is always great, the ambiance very nice, and Carol (our go-to server) is fantastic. We had another dining experience last week! We look forward to going again soon!
I went to Stella Mare thinking it was Italian food based on the name, but it turns out it is French. The decor is French country, which is not my taste. The chairs were uncomfortable with no lumbar support. The steaks were all cooked perfectly and the sauces were good, but not outstanding.
We had a lovely Thanksgiving Meal at Stella Mare's. It is beautiful with all the lights driving up in the early evening. The setting is comfortable, but the staff is quite professional and top notch. Our Thanksgiving meal was delicious, even though it was a familiar set of ingredients for the day. The kitchen must have been cranking out identical plates for hours. Desert was a perfect size, and I got a good cappacino.
My family and I were traveling at the Thanksgiving weekend and were looking for a nice place to eat a traditional Thanksgiving meal and Stella Mares was perfect. Great selection of food, great service and excellent atmosphere. We ate outside and it was a great day and relaxing. I would definitely go back.
Went for lunch. Absolutely charming place. Food only so so, but we'd still go back and try again with different dishes. French onion soup was fair, mushroom soup wax divine. Seared tuna salad wasn't all that tasty, nor a salmon pasta. Lunch steak and burger were good.
I lived in France and Belgium. This is exceptional! One step above a brasserie (which is French for "good restaurant with a full bar and uncomfortable chairs") yet a step below a 5-Star, over-priced gastronomy menu but the food is perfect. Everything was impeccably prepared, service was textbook-attentive, yet not pushy. No snobbery here, just a fantastic night out and we will return. My only disappointment was the very limited French wine selection. Apparently locals are die-hard Cali wine fans. However a $20 corkage guarantees I bring my own Margaux or Montepulciano next time and share with the staff.
Our dinner for 3 had 3 outstanding entrees and 3 excellent first courses. The waitpersons were industrious and tried hard, but something slowed the service to a near halt. We were told that the lamb took 25 minutes; but that surely shouldn't mean 25 minutes from the time we FINISHED our appetizers. Next time we will emphasize the fact that we are headed to a concert.
I chose this restaurant based on a particular item on their online Sunday brunch menu. After we were seated I asked the waiter and he informs us that they haven't had this dish for 3 years! I told him they need to update their website and he says a lot of other folks have had similar complaints but the owner will not update it. Very disappointing. I feel this is false advertising.
How does this restaurant have good reviews? First of all the ambience is straight out of 1996 when they opened. If you like yellow walls and grandma curtains then this is the place for you. The food is terrible. The fish in the sole meuniere was not fresh and did not taste like sole. The butter and lemon that makes it meuniere was missing. And any good restaurant filets the fish at the table, they did not, probably to hide the fact that it isn't really sole. Both Tre Lune (it's usually a special) and Lucky's offer excellent sole meuniere. The rest of the meal was equally bad. The grilled vegetable salad contained no grilled vegetables. The cauliflower au gratin was basically cauliflower sitting in warm milk with some cheese sprinkled on top. However, the waiter was excellent.
We have eaten at Stella Mare many times. It is a local favorite of ours. This particular evening the service was very slow. Mostly our server I think, and management did step in and comp a glass of wine after I waited for nearly 15 minutes to get the order filled. So we will still be having dinner at Stella Mare's...it is one of our favorite restaurants in Santa Barbara. Food is excellent and atmosphere lovely.
Great service and great food. What more do you need from a restaurant? Quiet location, easy parking, nice ambiance. Despite the name, they serve good French food. Wine list nice... not too extensive. Noise level is a bit high, as tables are packed close. But acceptable. We'll be back!
Our 2nd time dining here. I made Open Table reservations for 7:30 on a Saturday, when we arrived we were greeted and seated in the beautiful atrium. Our server Carol was excellent.
My friend and I started with Cocktails. For appetizers, we ordered the Spinach and Frisee Salad (Warm spinach and frisée salad, soft poached egg, pancetta vinaigrette, cherry tomatoes, toasted pecans, crispy prosciutto, shaved ricotta cheese, truffle oil) and Escargot Persillade served it their traditional shells. Entrees ordered was the Rack of Lamb with Cherry Gastrique and Mussels in white wine (braised leeks, shallots, cream sauce, French fries, mayonnaise) The Food was EXCELLENT!
Atmosphere beautiful especially sitting in the Atrium. Food is Excellent. Service is Excellent (thank you Carol) Can't wait for our next visit again to Santa Barbara.
Stella Mare's is tucked away on a side street just off the highway, though you wouldn't know it once you step inside. We heard no highway noise. There are two distinct areas in the restaurant: a green house design over a large dining room, and a series of smaller interior rooms with windows. We ate in the latter, but I would love to return to visit the other.
It took some time to be initially served, but it was a Friday night, and a large reception was taking place in the green house area. Our waiter was very attentive once we began interacting. He was very knowledgeable of the wines, and properly described them.
The food was exceptional, start to finish. We began with a cheese plate to have with cocktails. The waiter did not tell us anything specific about the cheeses presented, which makes it impossible to seek them out at Gelson's, but we didn't specifically ask. Appetizers were the scallops for me and the frogs legs for my date. Both were excellent, but the sauce with the frogs legs was divine. If we had the room to ourselves, we would have eaten the remaining sauce with a spoon.
Main courses included a nice selection of French dishes, and I chose the lamb shank which was cooked to perfection, the fat was nicely trimmed to the bare essentials, and the carrots and white beans with it were the perfect accompaniment.
Dessert was excellent - lemon tart/curd for my date, and the seasonal clafoutis (which was pear) for me. I have never tasted a more perfect clafoutis. Still warm and the batter in which it was baked had the flavor of crepe and a soft, but not thick, texture.
We will most certainly return.
Wonderful birthday dinner with the family on the night of the storm in Santa Barbara when many other restaurants had shut their doors. The service was exemplary & the food divine. We started with escargot and shared multiple other entrées that were impeccably cooked and served with a flair.
Located in what looks to be an old mansion, so lots of character. We wanted to be seated in the Green House, but it was really hot and humid that evening and there didn't appear to be any A/C there. Even the regular dining was a bit warm with the A/C struggling to keep up (they had several doors/windows open), but not fine for the meal. Luckily, they weren't fully-booked up so we had several seating options to select from. Service and food was quite good. Would definitely return.
Cozy, quaint, pretty colors. Food is very good, enjoyed the escargot, frog legs, loved the duck confit, fish.
Was really disappointed with the ladies room. I expected a pretty room with potpourri, flowers, something i usually see in french bistros. 😞
