About Stella Barra - North Bethesda
Stella Barra is an artisanal pizzeria with an eclectic menu inspired by the idea of simple honest cooking. Chef Jeff Mahin has developed a network of farms and purveyors to supply the restaurant with fresh-milled, 100% California flour for his handcrafted dough, as well as sustainably farmed organic produce, meats and cheeses. Pizza toppings range from prosciutto to shaved truffle to smoked bacon and can be served on a lighter “Thin Sin” pizza crust, or even gluten-free dough. From the signature pizzas to the seasonal specials, each dish reflects Chef Mahin’s passion for sourcing the best quality, local ingredients and presenting them simply.
The Market counter, shared with Summer House, serves a selection of fresh-baked pastries, sourdough English muffins and Chef Jeff Mahin’s famous cookies, along with locally sourced coffee and specialty espresso drinks.

Stella Barra - North Bethesda Ratings and Reviews
Veryyyy tasty food! I normally never eat the pizza crust, but this crust was amazing. It had the perfect amount of crisp and softness. The baked rigatoni with sausage, onion, and gruyere and the kale and chicke pizza with arugula pesto was so good and filling and didn’t not make me feel guilty afterwards! The ambience is very nice and cozy. We sat at a kind of a bar table. I thought it would be too small, but it was actually perfect for date night conversations! Loved it! Our waitress and hostess were also very friendly and nice.
The Pizza is always excellent; tried the shaved mushroom and Gruyere this time and was not disappointed ! They had 7-Locks beer, "Surrender Dorothy" which was pretty good. I remember the graffiti on the bridge over the beltway near the Mormon Temple from years ago - it made me laugh to see the beer name and had to get it.
Prices have gone up on the pizzas since the early days. While they are not "expensive", they are for pizza. I must say the pizzas are excellent though.
For a table of only 4 people the food took a long time to be served (45 mins). I was very surprised by the long wait since it as not crowded and we only ordered 3 pizzas and a Caesar salad, which was never brought to the table and had to ask for it to be removed from the check. That being said the drink order was very quick and they brought out a complimentary cookie dessert for my friends wedding anniversary which was what the dinner was celebrating. Also the butternut squash pizza was absolutely delicious.
Decor is cool. Has a lounge feel to it. Music was a bit loud and playing current hits, not conducive to a date but it is what it is. I ordered one pizza half cheese and half mushroom. No apps. Waitress said pizzas are made from scratch and would take 20 mins. No problem I feel like that is a standard wait time. Took 45 mins. I was confused because the restaurant really wasn't that busy. Maybe they are running pizzas next door because they share real estate with Summer House. I didn't say anything because I don't like to complain but the waitress took initiative and came over and apologized and said she informed a manager of the situation but that didn't change anything. No discount or free dessert or anything. Wasn't looking for that compensation but I was confused by her statement and what it was meant to accomplish. The pizza was very good. It's light and you don't feel disgusting like after eating delivery pizza. You can tell it's all made from scratch. For sure gourmet, quality. My hesitation in going back would be the wait time. I also would go back with friends but not on a date because the loud music takes away from the intimacy. UPDATE: the review above was from my first trip. I went again last Saturday and service was good and food as fantastic. I updated my yelp reviews to 4 stars
I expected to have the best service and food and it was a total let down especially driving 40 miles to get there. First they didn’t have there daily feature(appetizer) and the manager came to table and got us calamari instead. The server didn’t even by and apologize she was to busy getting comfortable with the manager it seemed like. My pizza came out first and they told my friend it would be just a minute for hers over all it took her about 15 minutes to get hers and it wasn’t even a new pizza just one with a new egg and reheated. The server then ignored us the whole time we were waiting for that pizza and the manager didn’t even come by to let us know what was going on. You would think for an 18 dollar pizza it would be a new one. I don’t understand what went wrong especially since there were only like 3 tables in the restaurant. Definitely won’t be coming back and I will make sure to let my friends know this restaurant was a complete let down. Thank you.
Party of 4, met with friends for brunch. Brunch menu offers $3 Mimosas (made with Tott's champagne) or Bloody Mary's; brunch buffet consists of: hard boiled brown (farm) eggs, scrambled eggs, eggs Florentine, roasted beef hash w/ potatoes, roasted potatoes, chicken sausage (yummy), thick cut maple bacon, enchiladas, guac, sour cream, 3 types of sauce (verde, spicy and a mild one), waffles (made to order w/ fixings) fresh blueberries, and parfaits. There is more than enough food and all of it was served hot and fresh. Stella's features a scratch kitchen and will work with you to accomdate special needs such as ours (gluten free). In addition to the food being locally sourced Making Stella's a place we really love and frequent. Katherine was our server. She is sweet, attentive and took excellent care of us, even when the restaurant got busier. Pike and Rose card earned us 20% off our check, we tipped Katherine a bit extra -
she was worth every penny. She went the extra mile in the kitchen to check to ensure which items on the brunch buffet were gluten free and did something a little special - getting us a stack of gluten free pancakes (which are totally not on the menu; but OMG they should be). They were served hot and fluffy and tasted oh so good. Clearly Katherine is hard working and cares about her customers. Our friends ordered 2 hand made, oven fired pepperoni pizzas and loved them. Stella's pizza dough is thick and soft, these pies were loaded with spicy, yummy pepperoni and cheese. Katherine your service made our brunch enjoyable. Our friends love Stella's and promise to return. Thanks so much for giving us top notch service and for going the extra mile. We truly appreciate you and look forward to dining at Stella's again!
This restaurant is a pizza place. I would not go for salad as it was very skimpy and $$ for what u got. The pizza looked amazing and the service was very good. We spoke to the manager about how disappointed we were about our salads and he was so very nice and generous and took care of us. I would go back for the service, the ambiance and pizza, not for salad simply because of how the manager handled the situation.
My husband and I have never been big fans of the buffet brunch venue but we really enjoyed this restaurant. Often I find that, as non-drinkers, the wait staff tend to ignore us once that fact is evident. But our waitress, Kathryn, was very helpful throughout our meal. She took her time explaining the day's offerings and checked on us often. We had a lovely time and plan on returning again soon. Unbeknownst to everyone; we were celebrating our 34th wedding anniversary and it was exactly what we hoped for.
Stella Barra is my favorite place for a cozy meal with just my spouse. We've been with friends and that's fun as well, but I love to get the table with the comfortable leather sofa for seating and share a delicious pizza. The crust is the real standout, but you can tell that all the ingredients are top quality.
Hostess Daniella and waitress Catherine were wonderful- fabulous service for 2 adults with 2 young kids. They made it a very welcoming meal! We've also had Tom for a previous date night who was super friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. We come at least once/month now and have wonderful service every time. Thank you staff!
This is a very good and creative pizzeria. Both the regular and Roman-thin crusts are very good. the topings are very good as well, and I would recommend the avocado and arugula pesto white pizza. The pizza menu is a bit restricted, but clients can order different toppings. Maybe the pizzaiolo should broaden a bit the range of signature toppings.
To be honest, we decided to go for brunch because there was an offer of one free brunch if you mentioned the offer to the wait staff. But we wouldn't have had any issue with paying. There was a nice assortment of foods. The French toast was a stand out, crispy bacon was as advertised, short rib hash (although the potatoes in the hash could have used a little more zing), bread pudding, and a whole lot more. The hostess/manager was constantly checking everything, refilling as needed, and keeping the buffet line spotless. She was far better at keeping the buffet line as close to perfect than any other hostess we've ever seen.
I enjoyed the Sunday Brunch. French toast and chicken sausage were among my favorites. We sat outside but it got to be a bit much with the number of people walking by or dining with their dogs. Next time, I think I will dine inside.
Reserved through Open Table and requested an outside table - which we got! Yay! Service was great, and so was all the food EXCEPT my tomato salad. SO much vinegar it was really inedible. I was very disappointed because the salad was beautiful. I told the waitress and they offered to remake it (I declined) and then they removed it from the bill. Aside from that, great dinner! Will definitely go again!
This place is a nice detour before going home after work. The staff at Stella Barra and Summer house are so pleasant. I can honestly say I have never had bad service at either place. Nick is normally our server and he is awesome. The manager has a great sense of humor and they all make you feel welcome.
