About Stefano's On The Market
Stefano's On The Market is an upscale American restaurant. The interior of the restaurant is decorated with an eye for contemporary style. Each table in Stefano's has chairs that alternate between a brick red and hunter green, keeping them from looking too uniform. The dining doom features an exposed brick accent wall and several paintings from local artists hung up throughout the space.
Stefano's menu takes inspiration from both France and Italy while giving each dish a distinctly American twist. Popular entrees include a classic filet mignon, pork ossobucco, veal piccata, braised short rib and chicken marsala. Stefano's is also known for its delicious desserts, including a house made sorbet, flourless chocolate cake, tiramisu made with bavarian cream and a creme brulee made from Tahitian vanilla

This restaurant is consistently at the top of it's game in both food preparation and service. The food is prepared exactly as ordered and the available dishe are often unique or prepared in a different method than the traditional. Extensive wine menu and delicious deserts. And the restaurant has a very knowledgable and friendly wait staff. Located at one of the strategic corners in the Roanoke Market area with lots of parking available with 1-2 blocks.
Looked like it was a good bar scene but this was NYE and we went for dinner. Yes, the kitchen was slammed and I think they were trying but wife's food was luke warm at best and my Special was not really as flavorful as I had expected. Overall a mildly disappointing experience. Probably would try a different spot if in town next year.
The food was fine; nothing extraordinary. Our server had zero personality. She was not friendly or welcoming. I can forgive that if service is impeccable; it was far from that. She reached across the table without saying excuse me, she tried to take plates without asking, drinks were left empty. 1.5 hours for entrees to be served. That's a bit much, even on a busy night. Overall, I wouldn't choose to go back and I wouldn't suggest this restaurant to others. There are many restaurants downtown that are much better.
(New Years Eve) Booked through open table, we walked through the door, gave our name, and they stated they had a special table for us for booking online. Placed us center of the band in the back room, a hidden gem for anyone who has ever been to Stafano's. The food was amazing, the service fantastic. I highly recommend you give it a try for yourself.
Stefano's is one of my go-to restaurants in downtown Roanoke. I like it mostly because it is not a "family restaurant" ... it is more appealing to foodies and wine lovers. It is quiet... which is nice. The owner will come check on you at your table. Someone will walk you from the front door to the restaurant area. Feels fancy and welcoming.
Each of our group of 5 had a wonderful dinner at Stefano's the evening after Christmas -- from the mussels, salads, pasta, to pork -- as well as great bread and dipping oil to start. The atmosphere is great with the brick walls, cozy and pleasant. The only downside was the waitress -- although she brought everything in a timely manner and took care of our needs - there wasn't a bit of enthusiasm nor a hint of a smile the entire 1.5 hours. I know we all have bad days - and I'm chalking it up to that - but when you are in this type of business you need to chalk it up and pretend you like (even enjoy) waiting on us.
We dined here on the spur of the moment when in downtown Roanoke. We were surprised when we walked in because there was a big waiting area that was empty (it looked like the place wasn't open), but as we walked into the dining area we were pleasantly surprised at the lovely atmosphere. The food was very good, but in spite of being only one of two occupied tables, service was spotty. I had to get up and get the water pitcher to refill our glasses finally. (The server wasn't in the room with us unless she was serving something, which makes it hard to manage anything that isn't working out.) I had a grilled romaine salad that was good, although the dressing was a little tangy for me. My husband and I both had the Manhattan Clam Chowder (a tomato-based chowder) which was fresh tasting and good. My husband also had the braised beef entree which he described as outstanding (quite a compliment from him). I asked for an extra bit of bread to eat with my bowl of chowder, which was slow in coming, but I saved a few bites to eat with it. We shared the dessert that was pudding, vanilla wafers and butterscotch, which was also very yummy.
All in all, this was a very good meal and it's not that uncommon to have spotty service when you're just about the only person in the place (strangely enough), so I won't hold that against them.
We recently moved to Roanoke and we're looking for a dinner spot after Xmas eve mass. Most places are closed on Xmas eve but Stefano's was open. We were among the early guest there, it eventually filled. We were greeted by the owner Steve who shared the story of Stefano's with us. The food was truly outstanding and on par with the best restaurants in most major cities. The waiter was professional, courteous and funny. Make sure you try the salmon speak appetizers and safe room for desert. A great experience for an affordable price. Did I mention. It's on the market place downtown, the best spot in Roanoke? Easy walk from hotel Roanoke.
We came to Roanoke to have a special dinner with my husbands parents, both age 84. I requested a quiet table because my FIL is hard of hearing. The table was perfect. Everything from the appetizers to entrees was excellent! Our waiter was Jay and he took care of everything. My only regret was not saving room for dessert! Hopefully, we'll be back soon.
in town for business, booked this for dinner for 3 of us. didn't have our kids with us so didn't think in those terms but for adults it was very good. great food, nice folks, good wine list and competent staff. found out as we were leaving they have a cigar bar and back room, cute spot.
We were visiting Roanoke and chose Stephanos based on Open Table reviews and posted menu. We liked the menu because it wasn't loaded with cream and cheese like many Italian restaurants. Mussels excellent. Veal dishes quite good although the menu didn't indicate that the veal was over a large portion of pasta.
Service was strange. The hostess who seated us was disorganized to the point of confusion. When we asked to have our table wiped she brought what appeared to be a dry towel and wiped it. When we questioned this she said it was treated but another person came immediately with a spray bottle. No one explained the large number of wines available by the glass--a big plus for any restaurant. Our waitress was totally clueless about the menu--no excuse for that. So we left feeling that although our food was good the overall experience needs some serious help especially considering the high quality of service in other Roanoke restaurants we visited
You should never serve shell fish that are not open. Your wait staff in a white table cloth restaurant should have basic manners and describe calamari with tentacles as gross. Your wait staff in a white cloth restaurant should not talk as if they are working in a bar-b-que joint.
This was a super experience. The food was excellent, presentation was great. The owner was in the dinning room to meet and greet the dinner guests as well as being in the kitchen to work (you can see the kitchen on monitors in the restaurant). The service from Ty was exceptional
This was our first experience (my wife and I) at Stefano's On The Market. We had never heard of it before, but while searching the internet for good places to visit for a great meal in Roanoke, our eyes were pleasingly satisfied as we perused the Stefano's menu!
Even though it was a rather rainy night and we traveled an hour (from Lynchburg, VA) to get there, we were not disappointed from the beginning of this fine dining experience to the very end.
The waiter was friendly, knowledgable, and very prompt in his attendance to us. Even the head chef came out and paid us a visit just to see if everything was to our liking. Needless to say, we were more than pleased.
My wife and I have traveled quite extensively and have been blessed and privileged to visit some fine restaurants around the world, and yet, Stefano's will serve as a wonderful memory for years to come. We do plan to return in the not too distant future and hope to introduce Stefano's to other friends of ours who can appreciate the phenomenal treatment that we received.
We had a wonderful dinner at Stefano's for our anniversary. We happened to have the same waiter we had at a previous we dined at in the area, and he was phenomenal. All of the staff were very courteous. The food was fantastic, excellent recommendations from our waiter including the grilled romaine salad. The wine was a perfect complement to our meal!
We were staying in Roanoke and naturally referred to Open Table to help us find a dinner spot. As usual, we were very pleased. We shared a bottle of wine and a great pasta dish. The restaurant was packed with people having a great time. For a super Italian dinner, be sure to go to Stefano's
We were visiting Roanoke for the first time for a football weekend to attend the OSU vs VA Tech game. We were looking for a casual restaurant with great food and that was exactly what we got with Stephano's. It is located in a fun area of town with street music going on and lots of foot traffic. Paid parking lots are located conveniently, which was a surprise for downtown. The food is Italian with a gourmet edge to it. The Mussel Bowls are fantastic as are the appetizer selections. All of the pasta is home made. The finer pasta was excellent. The thicker noodles were a little pasty for my taste - but some folks like them that way. The sauces were terrific. The wine selection was adequate. The service was excellent.
This is an easy walk from the Hotel Roanoke for those of you who might be staying there. The menu was interesting and well executed, the service was informative, friendly, and attentive, and the venue was attractive (although the street entrance is misleadingly otherwise). Would certainly recommend and visit again.
My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary and I was looking for a romantic place to take her. Stefano's was just that place. The music, the art on the walls, and the decor all set just the right mood.
From our greeting at the door, to the final goodbye and invitation to come again, the service was superb. Jay was very engaging and helpful in choosing a great wine.
The portions were ample and the ribeye was fork tender.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and will return when we visit Roanoke again.
I had dinner here with my fiance, his parents and my parents so we could try the food to see if we wanted to have our rehearsal dinner there. When we first sat down we had one waiter and in the middle of taking our drink order the owner rudely interrupted him and stated he needed to help another table that had just sat down, we had already been there for almost 20 minutes. We then waited another 10 minutes for someone else to come get our order. The owner did not apologize and neither did the waiter. Once we got our food, we were never checked on again until our check was brought to us. I can say this place is entirely to expensive for what it is. The food was really good but the service is just so very bad which is unfortunate because this would have been perfect for my rehearsal dinner. I will never go back to this place and will be sure to let others know my opinion of this place.
It was a fantastic meal in a fantastic space.
We had the chicken cacciatore and the short ribs and the butterscotch banana pudding (it has a cool name but I can't remember it) and all of it was out of this world.
Honestly, the entire dinner was one of my top five restaurant dinners ever.
We thought the food was delicious, but the service was horrid. After we told the waiter we didn't want a drink or wine, it was like we were 2nd class citizens. We had to request bread service and he never offered the olive oil that we saw other diners had. We also had to continually request refills on our water. The service was so disappointing, but the food was awesome.
Wow! My mouth is watering just thinking of what to write! I had been wanting to try this restaurant since moving to the area. My husband was skeptical but as loving husbands do, they let their wife pick out date night eateries ;) We had a wonderful experience. The dining room was not very busy, maybe three other tables. The overhead soothing music could have been a tad louder as I felt like I had to whisper with my husband as to not disturb other patrons. But, that is my only complaint! We started with the house spreads with grilled pita. Amazing. They then brought their fresh, homemade bread with oil and herbs dipping sauce. Delish. My husband had the meatballs and I the seafood cioppino. Amazeballs! The presentation was beautiful. Desert was the fruit plate with a small scoop of honey almond gelato and cream cheese fluff. Carry me to my car, please! Our waiter was equally excellent. Javoun J was very personable, friendly, and we had everything when we needed it without being overbearing. Just a wonderful overall experience. We will definitely be back!
You will feel special when you dine in this restaurant where the seating design is intimate and the art work is interesting. I love the grilled romaine and calimari. Also delicious is the bolognese and black bass. Wine list is special as well. A real treat with prices that won't break the bank!
They use to have the best mushroom tacos with pickled onions and a yummy sauce .. Different than anything I've had in Roanoke. I felt like I was in a different state, then they changed the menu and I tried their food and it seemed all the same I wasn't impressed .
We had a great experience at Stefano's last Friday! Our server was wonderful and the ambiance was great too! My only complaint was that the Calamari was a little bland- but the wine, caesar salad, pasta dish and short ribs were out of this world! Definitely recommend!
Excellent food. Presentations very pleasing to the eye. Sauces well flavored. Bread and dipping sauce well paired.
Deserts though are very skimpy and not in keeping with a reasonable portion to price. We had gelato which was less than a single golf ball sized portion.
Our waiter had no idea how to pronounce the menu items, a little rough around the edges and incongruous to the menu and atmosphere. Nice person, but needs significant training.
We were in Roanoke for a conference on our 41st wedding Anniversary. We were looking for a special place to have dinner and found Stefano's wasn't very far from the Hotel Roanoke where we were staying. It was the perfect place for a special dinner. Lovely setting, wonderful waiter and the food was delicious! Couldn't have asked for a better place to celebrate 41 years in a wonderful relationship!
