Steenbocks on Orchard
There was confusion at check in because the restaurant had canceled our reservation but they were able to seat us quickly. The grilled cheese was very garlicky, unexpectedly, and that was unfortunate for someone who was hosting a number of outside visitors to campus events that day.
Best kept secret on campus! The prices are great, the food is creative and tasty, the service is excellent and it is convenient.
The service and food was wonderful. I really liked the large windows as it was a beautiful day.

This is probably my third time here, but my first in 3+ years. The waitress informed us that they were out of multiple items on their already small menu. We got the Wisconsin Cheese Board to share, very underwhelming. (3 small pieces of cheese, board was dominated by nuts and berries) We also got the cheese curds to share, which were actually good for being a little different. Then we got the falafel for dinner. Pita was very dry, broke apart when trying to fold. The fries were good though. Overall, nothing notable to make me want to come back.
Service hasn't always been constant. I've had good servers and hosts and not so good server and hosts. The special was disappointing and not very comparable to other places around the area. Overall, it was not a stand out experience but location was good.
My wife and I went for Valentine's Day dinner for our first (and only) visit. Ambiance: Steenbock's is a section within a very large, open space, separated by a curved wall topped by a hedge of the tall upright plants known as mother in law's tongues; the small tables are close together and arranged in front of the wall. The plant wall does little to warm or enclose the space. The ceiling is high and the overall impression is of bright cavernousness. The lighting is strong and uninviting. And from my seat, facing in, my view was of a row of windows into a staff area, and on a shelf there - facing me, unfortunately - was a thing that looked very much like a boar's head. Papier maché? Real? (I hope not!) A staff joke? Valentine's Day dinners require a little extra in the way of ambiance and presentation, and that was NOT it. The food was good; my wife's salmon "burger" with pistachios and fennel slaw was very nice. My trout in white wine sauce with pesto arrived as a smallish piece of fish in a bright green pool of broth that was neither visually appealing nor especially tasty - I didn't taste either a white wine base nor any pesto, which was presumably the course of the color. The soup - sweet potato and apple - was a pleasure, thick and balanced. Our young waiter was slow to take our order, especially given that there were only a couple of other tables occupied, but was pleasant, and the host was personable. But with so many better restaurants in Madison, I will neither return there nor recommend it.
Excellent food, great atmosphere for conversations with job applicants, very nearby for convenience.
Restaurant week menu: we chose the roasted veggie salad.Yummy and interesting. Crunchy.
We then had the meatball bomber sandwich. A great roll, crispy. Meatballs a little too spicy for me. I ordered the sauce on the side and didn’t even use it. Can’t eat a lot of tomato. But my companion loved everything about the sandwich!
Dessert: chocolate budino in a cookie crust. Delish but very
small. Nicely garnished though.
The food was wonderful! The restaurant was quiet even though there were other patrons. A very enjoyable meal.
Excellent dining experience. The food was terrific and each course arrived promptly from the kitchen. All staff were friendly and efficient. I highly recommend Steenbock’s to anyone, especially those on campus due to its convenience.
First of all, this place is way more hyped up than what it really is. The soup was did not taste good, it tasted like it was out of a bag or a can. Sounds better than what it tastes (SN, there is only one soup on the menu). Second of all, the "cheese curds" should be called something else. Frying a battered ball of shredded cheese does not make it a cheese curd. We live in Wisconsin and when we say cheese curds, we have to mean what we say and do justice. The "pork sauce" keeping my cheese curds afloat was way too overpowering and it absolutely did not look like bacon. Whatever it was, it was enough flavor to flavor 3-4 pots of collards. Sheesh. Finally, I know it got super busy after I sat down but no one came after the first few bites to ask if we needed anything. I could have surely used some water to wash down what I wasn't enjoying. My cup sat empty for while.
Outstanding local and seasonal menu! A real culinary treat! The flavors just explode in your month, to die for...
What a pleasure to enjoy good, interesting food and have pleasant music quiet enough to enjoy a conversation with 10 of your friends around one table! Our wait person was very upbeat and managed our number with no issue. Go, Steenbock's!
We let substantial time go by since our last horrible experience at this restaurant. Despite a reservation, we had to search for some 5 minutes for anyone working here to tell us where to sit, give us a menu, etc.
A chair back fell off! Server said, "They're supposed to do that so we can stack them" presumably the chairs not the diners. Salad was good. My entree (trout) was served in a small cereal bowl with ingredients seemingly thrown on though there were so few roasted vegetables and such little rice maybe there was no other way to present the dish. Fish was way overcooked and poorly seasoned if at all. Sauce was awful. Pickled vegetable side dish for the other entree was rediculous. The pieces were too small to use a fork. Is supposed to use fingers? Grilled cheese is grilled cheese ... though Steenbach would do well to emulate Hubbard Street Diner's (also a Food Fight). What started out as a white tablecloth high end place is now on a par with Union South across the street. The Sett here we come!
The food was delicious and service was fine. I mark this visit down because the glassware was not clean. Each drinking glass has spots on it. Then a coffee cup of hot water coffee stains in it. Blechhh. All stains/marks were easy to wipe off with my napkin. That's what the dish people and other employees should do before serving to the customers. The wait person blamed the problems on the water. Well, I've worked in restaurants in Madison. We always had clean glassware and clean drinking cups because during the slow times we busied ourselves with making sure the things were CLEAN to the eye.
This is the best and only place on the west end of campus to get reasonably good food and elegant table service for lunch. I think the quality, presentation, and value have somewhat deteriorated over the years (soup used to be poured from an ewer, water used to have citrus or cucumber, salads would come with rolls) but it is pretty much a captive market. The University Club offers a better value and a bigger menu, but service can be slow.
Great place good food
We had a terrible experience. Got there 5 minutes before our confirmed reservation and the restaurant was closed. Not sure if the problem was with opentable or the restaurant.
We enjoyed great service at Steenbock's on Orchard. Two out of three of our meals were great. Steenbock's version of Ramen was a bit bland.
I waited too long to make reservations on a Friday night. This was the only place that had all times available. Not sure how they make it because the place was dead! It awkward and uncomfortable to be one of only three tables in a huge space. The food was good and this place would be good if you were at the Institue of Discovery for something but I would not recommend for a couples dinner.

It's quite modern with an open environment. The service was wonderful and the food fantastic.
The 3 course dinner for Valentines had really nice options and the price was right.
The place is very pleasant, quiet, and comfortable. It is possible to have lively conversations without having to shout. There is food for every taste. The quality is always good and well prepared. My husband and I wanted to honor a dear friend. It was lovely. We drank some very nice Malbec at a reasonable price. The service was excellent. I have been at Steenbocks often for lunch but never for dinner. I was not disappointed. I will certainly keep visiting!
Steenboks is close to work. We really appreciate having an upscale place to dine in the middle of the day. Our occasion was to celebrate graduation of one of our staff. The restaurant offers a delightful menu while also accommodating individual dietary needs. The food was delicious. Two of us had their beef burger while two had a salmon burger. Another had the hummus plate. The atmosphere is open and has a good urban feel to it. I have a suggestion, not just for this place alone, offer drinking water that is not frigid. There truly are people who don't like their drinks freezing. Can you tell that I am one of them?! Thanks.

Once again, we had a splendid lunch at Steenbocks. I so enjoy their risotto dishes and was not disappointed with their roasted corn risotto. Outstanding!

The food was tasty although some items came out missing elements(ie grilled romaine salad was definitely not grilled.) Service was quite slow and there were only two other tables in the restaurant. We were most disappointed by the atmosphere. We thought we were going to an intimate, romantic setting and instead it felt like a high end cafeteria. The food did taste really good though.

My wife and I have eaten here several times. It is very quiet at dinner time which is great as you can enjoy the conversation with your guests. The food is very good, in particular the risotto special. The service is also very good.
Ate here while in town for the Mini-Marathon. I was surprised it wasn't busier since so close to the race expo. Interesting concept with restaurant on campus. Food good. Service okay--very friendly but since they aren't busy cannot justify having more than 1-2 servers so service was slow but I wasn't in a hurry. Wine selection pretty good. Menu selection good. Had the risotto and garden salad. All tasty.
The wait staff was good. Ambiance not all that. Although, the food was very tasty; serving sizes smallish. The cheese platter as a starter was nice to share - we had 4 diners; the shrimp/cream corn dish was delicious.
We were delighted to try this place and find that it was everything that we could want on a lunch date. Nice menu, good prices, efficient service--what's not to like? I ordered the goat cheese croquettes from the appetizer menu, which was just perfect for a light lunch. Lovely little lightly fried balls of goat cheese served with a decorate arc of mixed leaves, ricotta, a scattering of an ancient grain (for crunch), and small slices of a marinated white fig--heavenly! Hubby ordered a pastrami sandwich on black rye (the proper European kind without the anis seeds!), which was stacked with pastrami and coleslaw. His fries were also excellent, fried until a medium brown, skins on the tips, and coated with a seasoned salt--delicious! Can't wait to go back to try some of the other interesting things on the menu. The only problem is finding parking for this place if you are going for lunch. If you don't mind walking, the neighborhoods adjacent to Camp Randall have free, 2-hour parking before 6pm. There are 2, nearby parking garages, but both were full on the day that we dined :-(

Our party of four had a delightful lunch at Steenbocks. We had a variety of entrees and dessert, all of which were delicious. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and hope to return.
The Spring Pea Fava Bean salad was excellent.
There was only one waitress on staff. She did a very good job, but could have used some help.
