About Statler Grill
The Statler Grill harkens back to the golden age of the big band era, and is named after Ellsworth Statler, who ran the Hotel Pennsylvania from 1919 to 1954, when musicians such as Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie and Glenn Miller played at the Cafe Rouge, the hotel's main dining room. The Statler serves classic New York steakhouse prime steaks and chops as well as daily delivered fresh seafood, while the bar and lounge serve a delicious grill menu. Located just steps away from Pennsylvania Station and Madison Square Garden, it is the perfect place to have a breakfast meeting, a meal before an event at the Garden, or just to relax with friends and co-workers during happy hour before you hop on the train.
It is all about the food and service says owner Joseph Lavelle. "I want my guests to enjoy themselves, have a great meal and return again and again".

Statler Grill Ratings and Reviews
The food was ok but the service wasn’t terrible! So slow, we were forgotten about, and my mom had to get up and one point to find a water pitcher to pour some for herself. There were bottomless mimosas which were good. I think they are understaffed for the amount of people they had come in after they opened! We went to Saturday brunch, and this app let us make a reservation there at 11, however they don’t open until 12! We had to go somewhere else for an hour. Overall this was not a great experience and I would purchase it again.
Used the Groupon. You get a different very limited menu. The steak offered was not so good. The waiter was a bit snobby. They were out of the desserts we ordered but did offer good alternatives. One of our party ordered from the regular menu. Her onion strings were well done but her sandwich was good.
We have been at this restaurant several times and have been very happy with the service and the food. This time the maitred was so rude. The waiter was annoyed at us for asking a question. When he poured the wine, he spilled it on the tablecloth. It was like he couldn't get away from the table fast enough. When we ordered our steak well done, He quickly put us in our place by saying you are ruining the steak. How rude!!!
I purchased the groupon for this brunch and they did not tell us there would be any substitutions. The did not have the all you can drink mimosas. The 8 ox filet mignon was replaced with a gristle filled 4oz sirloin. They did not bring our dessert which was a pre made cheesecake for about 1.5 hours. This was the worst brunch I have had in a few years. The hostess said she was sorry and did apologize but did not offer to refund any part of the money paid and claimed she would compensate us at a later time when they were able to replenish their kitchen supplies, prosecco and meats. I am not sure I want to try to take them up on this offer but I might just to see if they can redeem themselves
What was so upsetting was that this restaurant particepates in Groupon and instead of serving quality food they serve up inferior product just to satisfy the Groupon agreement. Rather than be honest about what you really get for your cost they mislead you into thinking that there is real value if you dine at Statler Grill. On top of everything else there steak preparation is vile. The shared Porterhouse is sectioned and then cooked causing the meat to dry out and shrink. Here’s an Idea; as a service touch why not carve it table side instead, if your aiming for convenience. Either don’t do Groupon or be transparent with the experience.
Manager STEVE was a great guy. Comped us 2 drinks because we had difficulty with our expired Groupon (will deal with them later- Grrrr).
I had the Lobster Club. Very tasty, but not the amount of lobster I expected. Came with shoestring french Fries (not a big fan).
My husband had Sea Bass and it was delicious.
They were out of Creme Brulee' for my dessert choice, so I opted for the Bread Pudding- massive and good!
Peter ordered Cheesecake and it came in 2 small round pieces. kind of unusual, and I would say it was not a typical cheesecake, not the dense New York style he was anticipating.
Overall, a nice dining experience.
We purchased a groupon for $94 and tried this place. I'd give it a 6/10. The Groupon included 2 apps, 2 entrees, 2 sides, 2 desserts and a bottle of wine. We ordered the tomato mozzarella app- it came with 1 slice of tomato (I'd hope you get more than that when it's from the regular menu), the steak was a porterhouse for 2 which was decent( they give you the option of upgrading for an additional cost), the sides were creamed spinach and mashed potatoes( the potatoes were just flopped on the plate like you would have at home- no pretty presentation). We picked the cheesecake for dessert and were surprised when it was served as a square- it was home made and not that good. If you were paying full price maybe you'd get a real slice of cheesecake. The wine was a $10 bottle but hey what can you expect. Decor is a little outdated and the service isn't that good but again it could be because of the discount we got. We weren't asked if we wanted anything else after the dessert or how things were just had the check dropped off with the gratuity already added, which perhaps is why the waiter didn't try very hard since he already knew he was getting $37. Was expecting more from this place.
Groupon folks are treated differently. As soon as we walked in we were asked if we had a Groupon. They sat us in the Groupon section and gave us a Groupon menu. It literally said Groupon on the menu. I had a sirloin which was horrible for a prime steakhouse. It was something I would expect at an Applebee’s not a steakhouse. My wife had the ribeye which was good. And 18% gratuity he was automatically tacked onto the bill. It was not worth the money we spent, even with the Groupon.
The Steak-LESS Steakhouse. A Wed night at 8PM and not a steak in sight. Unbelievable! There was no filet mignon, no porterhouse, no ribeye. Not a single steak that was on the printed menu was available. It was my birthday dinner and that was very disappointing. The poor waiter could not offer any explanation. The hostess should have told us before being seated there was no steak. And you would think someone from management would go around and offer up an explanation. That not only didn't happen, I never saw anyone from management on the floor during the entire meal. How a business handles a screw-up is very telling. By totaling ignoring the problem I can ascertain the restaurant is poorly managed and the owners find that acceptable. We are fortunate to live in a city where we don't have to tolerate this level of ineptness in restaurants. We have choices in NYC. My choice is never return to the Statler Grill.
That being said, I ordered the lamb chops. They were good. Unfortunately my meal had already been ruined.
I had an excellent lunch at the Statler. I was meeting my mother for lunch on a Sunday and wanted something close to Penn Station since she was coming in from the LIRR and it was raining out. It was the perfect choice. The ambiance felt like a step back in time. The service was wonderful and we never felt rushed since we had nowhere else to go and wanted to spend time catching up. The food was excellent. We had the sea bass and the salmon. (FYI: The creamed spinach is amazing.) Great desserts too -- I had the chocolate mousse and she had the apple tart. Between the food, the service and the atmosphere, we had a very nice experience.
We’ve been here a few times now. Every time is always great. They’re food is truly stellar. This time however, our waitress was absolutely awful. I waited while my husband parked. She never came over until 10 minutes after he arrived, and all she said was “How are you, are you ready to order?”. Never introduced herself. Never checked on us. Never asked my husband if he wanted another drink. I also didn’t like that our gratuity was automatically added to the check. We had a groupon and gratuity of 18%, or around $33 was automatically added. I just paid and left. It bothered me because even though I am generally a gracious tipper, in this case I did not believe she deserved that much, but I did not want to make a scene. We will be back, just hopefully with a more gracious wait staff.
I made my reservation for 11:30. Google said they open at 12:00 noon. I actually wemt to Targer across the street to kill time. I get back at 11:58am. They were ipen. It was empty. The porrtiins are small for a btunch coating $100. I gad a Groupon for $49. It was $39.80 after discount. That just left gratuity of $26. I drank many mimosas.
First trip to Manhattan and also our first meal in the big apple. That being said Statler was exactly what I was hoping for. The food was great. The service staff was clean and polite. It left a great first impression for the city and an even higher expectation for the food to come. Love this place and will return with friends!
The first problem is food. We ordered two steaks and pork chops and we got on the table in 5-7 minutes. The food was a bit warm and it looked like it was cooked a while ago and warmed up in a microwave after we ordered it.
The second problem is service. We ordered 2 beers, waited for 10-15 minutes, didn’t get the beer and asked for the cheque. Waited for the cheque for 5-10 minutes and then just came to the bartender to pay for the dinner.
On our last visit a few weeks ago, the service from our waiter was excellent - this time, not quite as impressive and in fact a little disappointing. We were kept waiting for placing our cocktail order, getting the drinks brought to the table and then also for placing our food order. And we wanted a 2nd round of cocktails while eating but we ultimately just asked for the check instead since it took so long to get the waiter's attention. That said, the food is really good (although they were "out of" a larger number of their regular menu items this time vs last time) and it's not crazy expensive so it's a pretty good choice for a tasty meal prior to attending any event at MSG . I'm sure we'll return but going forward we'll be sure to let them know as we're seated that we're on a pre-theatre schedule.
This was my 3rd time here, never had such a poor experience. I was very disappointed. Told my friends how good it was and it was by far good. We asked for several things you did not have. We wanted filet mignon sandwiches and their was no filet mignon. They substituted with sirloin, but it was too fatty. If you are going to put steak on a sandwich, the fat should be cut off.
This is a negative star restaurant trying to pass for a upscale dinning experience. Food was absolutely horrible. Tasted like microwaveable food thrown in a plate. Prices was extremely overpriced for what they offered. A huge disappointment in New York City! Uprgatde your menus and chiefs!
The "Groupon" steak was very thin and overcooked. I saw a nice thicker one at the next table and wondered if different food was served to Groupon customers. Not a great deal for the money. I would not recommend it or go back there.
I have been to statler 2 other times and I am sad to say that I was disappointed this time. This was the first time we didnt have Andrew and it felt like our waiter forgot about us. We ordered our steak medium, but it came out rare. They also forgot some of our sides. We had a Groupon, but this was the first time we were made to feel sub par because of it. The waiter gets a preset tip so he probably didn't feel like he needed to take care of us. Also, they had the heat cranked so high even though it was 65 outside.
