Love this restaurant .... one of our favorites
A must for us when we come to the Vineyard. We love it.. and get quite a few of the chocolate bars to take home
Used to be a favorite that we frequented often. Food is still good, but the portion sizes have gotten noticeably smaller and the prices are higher.
Long time diner at State Road for dinner and brunch. New chef and new menu. Dinner was very uninspiring. Tasteless black ink squid buns, and fatty brisket short ribs. portions were like a tasting menu. Went back for Brunch but all the old favorites were taken off the menu. Nothing particularly interesting to choose from. Won't go back until there is a new menu and different culinary approach. As always service was outstanding. Too bad.
We had a nice dinner the last night before State Road closed for a break. The fire was crackling, everyone seemed to be in high spirits, and dinner was delicious.
Food was really good and well prepared. Service was also very good. It was a bit loud , that was the only slight negative aspect of the meal. Nice fireplace atmosphere.
Underwhelming. Was there two weeks in a row. Both entrees - fish and chicken - were over cooked and under seasoned. Portion sizes tiny. Price expensive. Service was rushed-waitress actually said "are you here to talk or eat. "
So so noisy! Shut off the music and try to get it quieter
Not much of interest on the menu to me. Had the burger, but it was pretty ordinary. The standout was the fresh, warm bread.
Delicious food presented in a super attractive manner. A little pricey but worth it. Coffee was good, always a key indicator of quality. Service was excellent, many personnel co-operating to make our experience pleasant. Well worth repeating.
Delicious dinner prepared by the restaurant's new chef. The vegetation entree was outstanding as were the salads and side of Brussels sprouts. The restaurant was cozy and lovely, staff attentive and food excellent!
I feel like I'm repeating myself - having said that - great food, great and friendly service. It's a bit noisy in the main room. I prefer the porch but there was a couple with a bunch of kids so moved to the main room and they kindly accommodated us.
We've eaten there twice before and had full delicious meals and the Hot Fudge Sundae for dessert with coffee. This time our meals 2 Ducks and 1 Steak came almost with no sides. Then we were told the Sundae is only for Hamburger Tuesday. We left with half full stomachs and my birthday present which was dinner at State Road was completely anticlimactic. The bill came to $178.00 and my Mother was upset that we got so little for that. However, the Waitress did a fabulous job, plus she gave me a Birthday card signed by the wait staff with a jar of Caramel Corn and then a small bite size cake for dessert.
Reliable and predictable. In the good way! Thanks again for another comfortable Saturday dinner!
Our weekly visit to State Road for fall/winter Burger Night. It never disappoints. I had my usual patty melt, my husband had the sirloin burger and we split the onion rings. They seem to know us well there now. We are always seated on the porch, our place of choice and the waiter knew exactly what we wanted for dinner. It was a very pleasant experience. I highly recommend State Road - for brunch as well.
The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the menu is varied and always interesting. Outstanding creativity and preparation to every dish, apps, sides, main courses and dessert. The waitstaff is friendly, knowledgeable and professional. Can only highly recommend State Road!!!
Excellent presentation with quality, delicious entrees. Spoiled only by the loud conversations around us which inhibited our own.
Food is always creative and delicious
Staff is helpful
One of the best restaurants on the island
We love State Road and burger night (Thursdays in the off season) is always a good time to go though you do need a reservation. I like the patty melt, my husband likes the sirloin burger and we always share their delicious onion rings.
Unfortunately on this visit we had a very tired and hungry child directly across from us which did put a damper on the evening.
On the island for a post 50th birthday celebration for the youngest, my 3 sisters and I dined here on a late pre-Halloween Sat. night on a recommendation from our brother who owns a house on the Vineyard and State Road did not disappoint.
Because they have a liquor license to serve wine, beer and sherry-like drinks, the 'cocktails' are creative combinations which enticed us to order as a prelude to our apps and main courses.
The 4 of us split a buratta bruschetta and a hot cauliflower appetizer both bringing raves as we all four live/love to cook. Our main courses ranged from a pan toasted halibut with an eggplant coulis and curry flavored rings to a pork dish to an ahi tuna and nice salad as a side. All were delicious and the blend of flavors were both creative and appealing.
We only passed on the desserts because we had a box of Murdick' s fudge waiting for us back at the house.
Would love to return when the days are longer and try their other restaurant on Beach Rd.
Loved the farm to table theme which showed an appreciation for local produce and fresh meat and fish and the waitstaff was informed and courteous.
Both my husband and I found the main course ( duck for him, rib eye for me) exceptionally good. It'd be virtually impossible to beat it!
The marshmallow cream stuff on our sundae kind of smothered the otherwise yummy chocolate.
As the restaurant filled up, we found it more and more difficult to hear one another- so the noise level is our one complaint
We had an excellent meal here! The waitress suggested we could share several dishes, so my husband and I ordered an appetizer, a main dish, two sides, and a dessert, and shared them all. It was plenty to eat. We had the pan roasted chicken with spaetzle, swiss chard, and lima beans. The chicken was really flavorful (special breed?), and the homemade spaetzle noodles were fun. The bed of vegetables under the chicken definitely added flavor and enhanced the dish - not just decoration. The side of roasted carrots in harissa yogurt sauce was both cool and spicy. For dessert we had the pumpkin creme brulee and it was smooth and lovely.
I booked The State Road restaurant for my husband's 50th birthday meal after it came highly recommended. We arrived early and were welcomed by the manager at the door. We were made to feel very comfortable and offered a drink at the bar or to sit down early at our table. We had a drink at the bar and then went through to the restaurant. We ordered and shared a starter, which was divine. Then the main course was served. My husband tucked into his meal and was obviously enjoying it. My meal was burnt and didn't taste good at all. Not wanting to spoil the occasion for my husband, I didn't make a fuss. The waiter came and enquired with my husband about his meal and then left the table again. I saw that he had noticed that I wasn't eating but he said nothing. When the waiter came to the table he asked if I was still enjoying my meal or if he could clear the table. I told him that no I wasn't enjoying it so he cleared. My husband noticed how little I had eaten and became concerned. When the bill arrived, I enquired as to why no one had enquired with me about my meal. He told me it was his responsibility to ask as the chefs were far too busy in the kitchen to notice my untouched food and he took the bill and went away to speak to someone. When he returned he offered us a complimentary desert, which I declined because I don't like desert. By this time I was pretty upset that no one had the front to speak to me about the experience. We paid and as we left the manager at the door turned away from us so he wouldn't have to speak to us. So in short, two excellent plates of food, one awful plate and terrible service. Difficult to rate. I expected much much more from this top restaurant and have been left with a nasty memory.
My husband and I had a lovely dinner. Wine and of course dessert!! Everything was delicious. We both recommend State Road.
Our favorite place on the island!
Great experience; great and unique menu. The wait staff was very nice and the ambiance fantastic.
The food was very good but not extraordinary. Menu choices were limited and there were four duck choices. There were no entree specials. The house salad was excellent.
Excellent food, wonderful service.
My wife and I have declared this hidden gem as our new favorite destination whether on the island or not since its worth the ferry ride - just for a meal at State Road. Love this place. Staff is casual - yet very efficient and pleasant. Everything about the menu is terrific. The homemade ricotta and bread is an amazing beginning.
Amazing food, fantastic service and wine list. Very pricey but worth it.
Everything was amazing. Farm to table and locally sourced deliciousness in a candlelit quaint setting.
Fine dining with filling portions. Incredible food, impeccable service. Absolutely an all time favorite!
Amazing that you cannot bring your own wine because the wine they serve was not great.
The food was very good, the ambiance was great and they took our reservation at the last minute, but I had a few issues with the service. First, the sommelier brought out a bottle of wine with a twist off instead of a cork and, after pouring the wine, left it on the table with the twist off still on the bottle. So far, so good. But a while later the waitress came by to pour more wine. I did not notice, but she walked away with the twist off top, never to be seen again. She did not need to do that. In giving her the benefit of doubt, maybe she just was trying to be neat. But it also had the effect of preventing us from taking home any part of the wine in the bottle -- not to mention causing the wine, which was a white wine, to warm up prematurely. So, the options were to drink more wine than we cared to do -- which we ultimately did -- or leave a half drunk bottle of wine opened on the table, free to the wait staff to consume when the night was over. I had to wonder if the latter option was what the waitress was wishing for. Second, when it came time to pay the check, a mysterious extra dessert that we never ordered seemed to pop up on the bill unannounced. I am normally negligent about checking the bill for errors, and I would have paid the full bill as is without noticing. But my wife did notice. When I questioned the same waitress about the extra charge, she was not all that convincing in pretending she did not know how the charge could have possibly gotten on the bill by error. It seemed quite obvious that it was not a mistake. She did, however, erase the charge quickly when it was pointed out to her, and I left her the usual 20% tip nonetheless.
We go to State Road as often as we can! Ths food is always prepared perfectly. We love the interesting choices and combinations of ingredients. The desserts are such a special treat. We had the nectarine and plum tart....amazing!!! Mary and Jackson are amazing hosts and always make us feel welcome and special.
We had a great experience. The food was delicious and we had a wonderful waitress which always enhances the experience. I had been warned to as for minimal salt on my order because they tend to over salt the food (seems all to common these days) and I was glad I did.
Food was really delicious!
My wife and I often arrive early for dinner reservations, we enjoy a few cocktails at the bar prior to dinner. “State Road” did not welcome the idea (with a bit of an attitude), they told us if someone wanted to eat at the bar, we’d be kicked out (not the words I would have used). We sat at the bar for 20 minutes and realized we were not going to be served, the bartender never acknowledged us… so we asked to be seated. Our dinners were delayed about 45 minutes “Kitchen was backed up”, but since our server offered to comp. desert because of the delay, I decided the two incidences were not linked. Back up two days, our B&B host told us upon arrival he too was having trouble with State Road, losing reservations and some attitude to boot. He directed us to “Beach Road” same owners, great food and different attitude… Beach road was excellent and yes we had a few drinks at the bar without incident. State Road needs a reality check; a lesson is customer relations perhaps…
As always, service, presentation, and portion size were spot-on. My only criticism of my entree, which was the pan-seared duck, was that I would have liked it cooked with more of the skin/fat rendered down. The staff recommended it medium-rare--which I think is a mistake. Medium-well would have possibly presented a crispier skinned, less rubbery texture. As it was, I needed up having to cut away the fatty layer under the skin in order to be able to chew the meat.
We have loved this restaurant for years and were greatly disappointed with our recent visit. So much so, we have canceled future reservations. The food was nowhere near the quality it is known for.
Completely deserves its annual "Best of MVY" status - every year! Great food, superb staff, and somehow does this all consistently. From the basics they make amazing like burgers (off season weekly burger nights are brilliant) and roast chicken with fiddleheads, to the fancy schmancy fish dishes - fresh and delicious. While the sister Beach Rd. restaurant is also great, I wish they'd expand the State Rd. space for those of us dining up-island!
