The restaurant industry in recovery

In March 2020, OpenTable launched the State of the Industry site to illustrate how COVID-19 has been impacting restaurants around the globe. One year later, the data from restaurants on our platform continues to tell a powerful story - identifying moments of recovery as cities, states, and countries reopen. We’ll continue to update the data daily to support ongoing work by government agencies, restaurant associations, and the media and to help our restaurant partners on their path to recovery.

Update: Starting on March 11, 2021, we’ve updated the data including downloadable dataset from January 1, 2021 onward to compare seated diners from 2021 to 2019, as opposed to year over year. We’ve also added a visual to highlight recovery by comparing change in seated covers in 2020 to change in seated covers in 2021.

The first section shows seated diners from online, phone, and walk-in reservations
How many people dined at restaurants in 2021 and 2020, as compared to 2019.

The details: we continue to measure the overall impact of COVID-19 on the industry by showing seated diners at a sample of restaurants on the OpenTable network across all channels (online reservations, phone reservations, and walk-ins) in states or metros with 50+ restaurants on the OpenTable network.

As of March 2021, we’ve updated the [downloadable] dataset from January 1, 2021 onward to compare seated diners from 2021 to 2019. This represents seated diners across all channels at the same sample of restaurants. While COVID-19 has had a significant impact on restaurant closures, this data may not account for the changes in the number of restaurants on our platform in a given area.

For year-over-year comparisons, we continue to compare the same days of the week to the same day of the week in 2019 (not the same date). For example, we’d compare Tuesday of week 11 in 2021 to Tuesday of week 11 in 2019. To better reflect the state of the industry overall, this dataset is based on a sample of approximately 20,000 restaurants that provide OpenTable with information on all of their inventory in states or metros with 50+ restaurants on the OpenTable network. This sample of restaurants typically accounts for a majority of our seated online reservations.

The chart demonstrates where we are seeing recovery start to take shape representing seated covers from 2021 and 2020 to as compared to 2019 at only the restaurants that have chosen to reopen in a given market. As an example, if there were 50 seated covers in restaurants that have recently reopened in a given locale on May 11, 2019 and on the same day in 2021 there was 1, then 2% will be displayed. For this chart, only markets with 500+ restaurants on OpenTable of which 10%+ are accepting online reservations are included.

The recovery graphs show (1) top growing states defined by those who have had the greatest growth in seated covers over the last 14 day period and (2) top performing states defined by those states who have highest covers growth in the last 7 day period. This represents seven days rolling as compared to the same date range in 2019. Both graphs are limited to North America.
