Stars Restaurant - Rooftop & Grill Room Ratings and Reviews
I took my parents here for brunch on Easter Sunday. It was a hit! Stars offers a buffet brunch for only $25 per person, and there is plenty to eat. This is one of best deals in town. The appetizers include a delicious platter of smoked salmon with all the fixings, a cheese platter (delicious bleu cheese), and a strawberry salad. The entree table has delicious French toast (without nasty cinnamon), well-prepared scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, etc. They featured a chicken eggs benedict. My mom LOVED the shrimp and grits, which she had never tried before. The dessert trays had macaroons, banana bread pudding, etc., but the big hit was the flourless chocolate cake bites. Yum! We will be back during my parents' next visit to Charleston.
My family and I had brunch reservations for Easter Sunday. We were seated promptly and the service was great!!Food was very good but it was mostly breakfast items. Very few lunch options for those who don't like breakfast foods. That being said, the French toast was excellent!!!
We started on the rooftop, where drinks were served in plastic and service was a bit slow, but it was a Monday night (1 bartender). Dinner downstairs was of a higher caliber. $20 plate of lobster pieces and fresh pasta was a smaller portion than we expected. Steak, burger, and salads were all excellent. Wine selection was great, and service was very attentive, kind, and knowledgeable. Big front windows for natural light. They packed up our dessert to go which was such a nice treat!
Stars Restaurant - Rooftop & Grill Room is a great restaurant that has amazing food, atmosphere, and service. I came here with a group of 9 of my girlfriends and we had the best time. We had drinks on the rooftop before our reservation and it had such great views of downtown. The whole experience was great - I would definitely recommend it to others!
This was our first time at Stars and it was recommended by our son who is more familiar with Charleston restaurants. We were very happy with our experience other than the rooftop bar was very busy and crowded with a much younger crowd than we fit into. The downstairs bar was more to our liking and was staffed with very professional bartenders. Our server, Phillip, was very helpful and we did not mind his "shadow" for the night who will also become a great server in time. The food was outstanding! We had the scallops and they could not have been better. We left quite satisfied and will no doubt be back on one of our return trips to Charleston.
The restaraunt was packed and busy. We were seated promptly by the friendly hostess. My fiancé and I were visiting Charleston and enjoy finding great restaurants anywhere we travel. I had the rib eye steak served with a brussel sprout and cheese side that I cannot describe adequately along with an au gratin. The food was excellent. Even better was the staff. Our waiter, whose name I apologetically cannot recall was very attentive without being overly so. He displayed a sincere southern charm while he ensured we enjoyed our meal. The only downside to this excellent restaurant was the noise level. There's nothing you can do about that though.
Overall, good, but lackluster. When we dined there two years ago it was notable. Our guest that night observed that he had had the best meal of his life. He specifically requested a return visit this time around. This week it was at best "above average."
Excellent appetizers and deserts. The wine (Argentine Malbec) was exceptional. The main dishes were very good, well prepared and well presented, but only average for the city at a mid-level price point,. The sides (fries / mashed potatoes) and a small green salad garnish) were mundane.
The service was excellent. We had one gluten intolerant member of the party. He was treated very well with every dish explained relative to how it could or could not be served gluten free. Our server was both knowledgeable and attentive.
It is clear that the restaurant price point has changed. The overall experience has diminished from exceptional to average.
Food was amazing! I suggest trying the mushroom bruschetta and the S'more pie. Drink list was extensive and well made. Service was friendly and attentive. Only thing that was disappointing was our seating arrangement. It was full house so we we were sat at a tiny two person table, which would have been understandable except we were across from a six person booth with only one occupant.
The noise level is a problem if you want to have a conversation. The food is ambitious and "current", but we had the feeling they're trying to hard to be hip. Our main course was very delayed for some reason and while the manager apologized, it was still a bit frustrating. Overall, a good spot for young people, I think.
I have lived in Charleston for 25 years and don't think I have ever been as underwhelmed by a restaurant, my niece and her friends were in town for one night and had never been to Charleston before and thought it would be fun for them to go to Stars. The bar was nice but the dinner was disappointing, we had hot oyster appetizer, which was lukewarm and 3 of us had lobster tagliatelle, which had no flavor. The service was fine and I am never going to complain at a restaurant, just not go back or recommend. I spent about $400 for dinner and drinks and feel like I was ripped off!
The service at Starz is impeccable. The food was very good and the ambiance was interesting. It seems they are trying to attract a regular bar crowd and also having a nice dining experience. It was winter and the rooftop bar was closed. I'll come back and see how the ambiance is in the spring. It was very unique and I enjoyed the younger successful crowd.
Attentive white coated waiter explained menu well. Delicious baked oysters to share. Perfect mussels in ginger broth. Great blueberry, creamy goat cheese, walnut salad. Husband devoured a huge cut of smoked grilled pork "porchetta". Imaginative preps without trying too hard. Chose wrong dessert: deconstructed strawberry shortcake with 3 quarter-sized biscuits, a drizzle of warm jam with diced strawberries and jalapeños & ice cream. Very sweet. $9. Crowd of well dressed young people. Lots headed upstairs to rooftop grill w heaters! Great addition to Charleston's competitive dining scene.
We recently dined at Stars and found it to be a great experience. The atmosphere was vibrant and bordering on the side of loud, but conversation was still comfortable. The service was outstanding across the board. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced for the quality provided. We decided to go up to the rooftop bar for a cocktail after the dinner, and found this space to be very comfortable even on a frigid night. We really enjoyed ourselves, and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.
We had an amazing visit to Stars, and as this was our second time, it did not disappoint! The food was incredible, as usual, and the staff is friendly and not pushy. Typically on Valentine's Day I feel like there is always a rush to turn over tables, and Stars did not do this which was incredibly refreshing. The rooftop bar is always a gem, too.
The food was ok. The menu was a little confusing instead of listing appetizers it had small plates and shared plates. The choices were limited for both which seems like a bar menu. The dining room was well decorated but we sat near the bar with tvs going. It's confusing, is it a beautiful elegant restaurant or a fancy bar? overall this restaurant has an identity crisis. Decide if you are a bar or a fine dining spot.
I made a reservation for two on Open Table and thought we were set. We got to the restaurant and we were asked to wait at the bar. After waiting, they pointed to our table which was a high top table in the noisy bar area surrounded by folks standing with their drinks. We decided to remain seated at the bar. A reservation at Stars doesn't mean you're getting a normal quiet table. The food and the bar service were great (some redemption). The roof top bar has a great view, ample seating and friendly service.
Food is really great. Ambiance, not so great. That night was crowded- especially around the bar and front tables. The noise level was over the top. We asked to get a table further in the back and half way thru our meal we did. It was better but we still had to shout. Our first waiter was obviously new and not so great. Our second waiter was very good.
I would like to return but not with that loud noise level.
There was nothing wrong with our experience but it did leave us underwhelmed as there was nothing special about it either. To be fair our group did consist of two small children who were not in the best mood but the food did not blow us away. Granted, the competition is extremely stiff in this town. There are too many other great restaurants in the area for me to give Stars another shot. Sorry guys.
Recommend Stars for a nice evening out. In addition to appetizers and regular entrees they serve small plates; a girlfriend and I shared several: they were excellent and gave us a chance to taste more dishes! Can be a little noisy around the bar but the tables in back are quieter.
I like the vibe at Stars.....kind of loud, but energetic and not stuffy. So, I had guests in town and thought I'd take them there. One guest is vegan, so I called ahead to make sure they had something on the menu that would work and since it was restaurant week they said that they would make sure the chef got the note and could prepare an option for my guest. I was excited about this and thought it was nice of them to be so accommodating (I evern called ahead that day to confirm this was going to happen). Well, the chef option never happened and when we asked our waiter to check to make sure a few of the dishes he recommended as vegan actually were, he just kept saying "I'm pretty sure you'll be fine" but wouldn't check with the chef. So, my guest ordered a dish he suggested (butternut squash rissotto) and it came out as plain risotto with broccoli. Nothing in the menu description was in the dish and it wasn't cheap either. We sent it back and he said that was a good thing because the chef just told him there was dairy in the dish he brought out. He finally brought out the right dish after we were almost finished eating. To top it off, she was starving because she ran the Charleston Marathon earlier that day. Not a great experience and with so many great restaurants downtown, I won't be recommending it. They should have paid for her dinner. I've been a server in many restaurants over the years and would have done things much differently.
Brought my new boss and fellow corporate partners. They were highly impressed with food selection and service, and the waiter was very professional and kind, he even made sure we got a couple of bowls of those delightful brussel sprouts for the table. I highly recommend Stars for something unique in food and elegant with service.
My husband and I made reservations for Wednesday, 01/14/15 during Restaurant Week and for our 26th Wedding Anniversary. Our waiter, Mike was a gentlemen, attentive without being overly so, and friendly. Mike and the Stars staff allowed us to eat leisurely and to enjoy each course on our own time frame. (getting food before you have finished the fist course is one of our biggest pet peeves)
All three courses were just what the menu described. The presentation beautiful and the taste, yum! The cocktail, wine and beer list was varied for everyone's taste, with many good choices.
We had not said that it was our Anniversary until we had been seated, but our desserts both came with Happy Anniversary written in chocolate around the plate.
Thanks for a nice evening Stars.
The choices and taste of the restauant week options were wonderful. It was too cold the night we were there to enjoy the rooftop bar but we could tell that on a nice eventing it would be a great spot. Looking forward to going back to explore their regular menu.
Stars is a good dinner option for larger parties. The food was good but to be honest nothing was a wow!! The service was also spotty. The "draft wine" also wasn't exceptional" but it could have been the one I chose which was a Pinot Grigio blend. Overall worth a try
