St. Paul Grill and Bar Ratings and Reviews
This was our Valentine's night out for my wife and I before a Wild Hockey game. Food, beverage, and service all exceeded expectations. We don't come here often due to $$$$. It was a special occasion and well worth it. We got a gift card bargain before Xmas, so the expense was limited. We still have a few gift cards to St.Paul Hotel associated restaurants which we'll use as the year goes on. Great service is hard to find today. They have that mastered, along with superb quality and a historic atmosphere.
Our Valentine’s dinner began with a very refreshing pear cocktail. I followed it with a beet salad which I could have eaten another plateful! I had the scallops over risotto which were a little too gritty, but meaty and impressively seared. The risotto was unimpressive. My husband ordered the chicken pot pie which he found to be as tasty as the Lexington’s and Hy-Vee’s. Overall, a wonderful night with our delightful and obviously experienced waitress.
The food was excellent! For my personal opinion it was too packed an loud, but if course it's good for business. Our waitress seemed good at first, but for the end portion of our meal, she ignored us. We were done with our food and drinks, and we had to have waited 15 -20 mins until she even came over. She had other tables, but from what my partner and I could see it wasn't an overwhelming amount. She was busy clearing plates when I'd like to point out there is a bus boy who was already doing that. The service wasn't horrible, but for the price of food we were paying, it was crappy service. We won't be going back.
We visited for an early Valentines Dinner. Our food was exceptional and the service impeccable. I had suggested a local pizza restaurant and I'm so glad my Valentine suggested the St. Paul Grill instead. Top notch. I had forgotten what a treasure this place is!
We were seated by a window, which would have been great if it wasn’t winter. It was very cold & we asked to be moved; they were very accommodating & did move us to another table. They did try to adjust the heat, but it didn’t help. They did ask if we wanted blankets—that seemed a bit strange. But they were very nice about giving us another table.
Everything was great. However, the steak came out at room temperature. I ordered medium rare, if that matters. They were quick to get it back to the kitchen and it came back a lot warmer. I just would have expected a bit better for such an expensive place. Also, there were a lot of things going on at the time (Winter festival, Wild game, and a play or two) so it was rather packed and loud. It wasn't awful, just a note. Otherwise, everything else was fantastic!
Had a celebration there last evening and have to say the food was disappointing. Nothing was special. Expensive steaks were mediocre. Cheese plate had three small pieces of cheese only. Sides were not outstanding. This place used to be great. They need to get back there.
We had dinner at the Grill on a Friday night before the Chamber Orchestra. It was also a weekend of the Winter Carnival and a night the Wild was playing at home. I understand they were busy but the food - basically entrees - that all four of us got were mediocre and a disappointment. No one bothered to come to the table during the time we were eating to ask if the food was acceptable. It will be a long time before we return to the Grill given the cost of the meal we had and the poor quality of our food.
Service and food was great, but the experience was marred by the temperature. We had to wear our coats just to not shake from the cold. We were not even sitting by the doors.
They need to supply blankets in cold weather!
We went for our anniversary, so unfortunately the night was not stellar due to this issue. The food of course was wonderful, the few minutes it was hot.
Dinner was fabulous from the starters - hot peppered shrimp which was reminiscent for the bbq shrimp in New Orleans and the pepper crusted lamb served pink with a feta cheese aioli to the entrees.
My partner had the regular swordfish on spinach and bacon lemon butter sauce, dont knock it until you try it! I had the special aged (30 day) ribeye with Bearnaise sauce on the side, great sauce but the steak was to good to ruin with anything on it, melt in your mouth and almost cut with the fork! You can taste a little of the aging but I enjoy the extra flavour it brings.
Beautiful tower of onion rings - each ring is huge, I felt the jalapeno mayo could have had a little more of a bite. Still delicious.
