St. Jack offers French food with a unique twist in terms of flavor and presentation. The escargots were minced and served in pasta shells, the oxtail was similar to pulled pork with its texture and consistency, and the bone marrow had a heavy mustard flavoring. This is definitely not a traditional French restaurant. The interior lighting is dim and the china used are eccentric and add character to the restaurant. Expect moderately upscale, somewhat overpriced dishes served by very "Portland" (quirky and talkative) waiters/waitresses in a hip setting. I would definitely not recommend the oxtail pappardelle as it is not worth the money. I would however recommend the ahi tuna ($14 special, as the server if it is available) as it was light yet flavorful.
Hmm. Not sure what the hype is over. The food was good, as expected. Service was good, as expected. Very disappointing wine/beer list. Would bring our own bottle next time and pay the corkage. Tight tables which meant we were looking at the server's butt too many times as he worked tables alongside. Major turn-off was the music and noise level. Way, way, way too loud to have any kind of an intimate conversation, or any conversation really. Will not go back.
The service was attentive and thoughtful; cocktail preparation and wine recommendations were great. The restaurant is adorable, and super cozy. Unfortunately, during this visit the food lacked the sense of comfort and depth of flavor I normally associate with french bistro food. That said, I've had good food here, and know others that have had lovely meals here.
My guests and I enjoyed our dinner at St. Jack. I had the foie gras starter which was spectacular. I was a little less enthused with the mussels, but that is because I live in France and am used to the petite mussels we get there. I had forgotten that they are so much larger here on the West Coast. Nevertheless, the preparation was perfect. My guests were over the moon with their chilled poached prawn starters and the Wagyu beef fillets they selected for their mains. The service was excellent, and our waiter had answers to all of our questions. I will definitely put St. Jack's on my itinerary whenever I am in Portland.
This is a small French bistro style restaurant. Unfortunately the night we were there a party of eight was seated at a large table in the middle of the space. The noise from that table was so loud that other diners couldn’t hold a conversation without shouting . By the time we left I had a headache from the noise level. We stuck our head next door in the bar and ironically it was much less noisy.
The food was good but not memorable. Our total tab was $130 (and that was splitting an entree and about $50 in wine by the glass) so overall it was an expensive noisy disappointing evening.
Too many other better choices in Portland at this price point.
This was our first time at St.Jacques. The restaurant has a limited menu which I appreciate since I believe that long menus do not make for good restaurants. That said, It might be difficult to select a dish that would please a large range of tastes. Two of the people at my table had moules which they said were very good. I had an excellent salade Lyonaise (frisee with lardon). The deserts were a disappointment. I shared a tarte aux almonds with my husband which we both agreed was way to sweet and not very good. The other members at my table shared ice cream which was mediocre. I also think the prices were a bit high for this type of restaurant. Overall not a bad place.
I was very disappointed in our meal here. The salads were excellent, but the choice of entrees was much too limited and had only one meat option. My husband and I ordered the lamb pot au feu. It was over-salted and dry. The noodles were good but a bit too al dente for our taste. The worst part was the noise level. I would call it deafening rather than energetic. By the time we left everyone in the restaurant was shouting at everyone at their table. On the plus side we had chocolate-bourbon ice cream that was a generous portion and the silkiest, smoothest ice cream I have ever had.
Our first time at St Jack. We enjoyed the service and friendliness of the staff. We were disappointed with the menu options. What we ordered was delicious but there were only 2 things on the menu that appealed to me. Would like to see at least one chicken entree.
The French food is the best in Portland. Much better than Little Bird. The ambiance was Portland chic, which means crowded, noisy, poorly dressed patrons (the couple that was seated next to us were old, fat and the man was dressed in shorts a T shirt and had a baseball cap on. A couple of zhlubs) and generally unappealing. The wine list needs help. They feature way too many 2014, 2015 & 2016 vintages. In particular every option by the glass was from those years , which means all the selections have that syrupy finish you get when the weather was simply too hot to grow good grapes.
We visit St. Jack several times a year and always enjoy the experience. I always find something on the menu to suit my "almost" vegetarian tendencies. The bread is the best ever! Salad Lyonnaise is delicious but not always offered. Mussels and steaks are wonderful and the frites with bernaise heavenly. Our fish preparation ( black cod with mushroom ragu) this evening was underwhelming. Dessert ( fancy version of chocolate cake with ice cream) was fabulous. Our waiter seemed to have some sort of attitude or maybe it was just zero personality. Either way it was a bit of a distraction to our evening. On chilly evenings request a table away from the front door and window. The cold rushes in every time the door opens!
We came for the quail in a pastry with mushrooms and foie gras. We first had a green salad that was overly dressed with a strongly vinegar dressing. I was determined to have some vegetables, so struggled through it . I was disappointed in the quail dish. I searched for a taste of foie gras but never had one. I was later told that it as not foie gras, but torchon. I never tasted that either. The mushrooms had so much vinegar that I assumed they were pickled. They added nothing to the dish and were even worse as I was still trying to get the taste of the salad out of my mouth. I had eaten the fig tart a few weeks before and was anticipating it. Unfortunately the fresh figs that we’re so delicious had been replaced with a few less than interesting dried figs. In France, if a food goes out of season they don’t leave it on the menu. I truly wished St. Jack had followed that French tradition. We were thinking of celebrating my husband’s birthday there later this month. We were grateful that this wasn’t the celebration.
We brought friends visiting from Germany to our favorite Portland restaurant and St. Jack did not let us down. Salads, starters (especially the sweertbreads) and mains (tomato tarte tatin, lamb, mussels, boudin noir) were all excellent and we were glad that we left some room for dessert. Great service throughout the meal.
We had an amazing meal and amazing service for my mothers 60th birthday dinner. You were so kind to surprise us with a glass of bubbly to welcome us to the table and then dessert at the end! The level of detail, service and delicious food made for a memorable night.
Usually delicious, must have had an off night. Surprised to have my quail served raw. But according to the server that’s how quail is served (first time for me). I love steak tartar but rare quail not so much. The next night I ordered quail at Superbite, fabulous and not raw.
I've eaten here 3 - 4 times and it just gets better and better. This week we went there for my birthday. My husband had the tuna special and I had steak frites. His entree was delicious but a little skimpy for the $35 tariff. My steak was perfectly cooked as were the shoestring fries, accompanied with a yummy red wine reduction and an unnecessary bernaise sauce which was overly rich and cloying. It was served on the side, though, which is a good decision by the kitchen. We split a butter lettuce salad which was very tasty but swimming in too much dressing. Despite these small flaws, I loved the food and the ambience. We sat next to one of the large sliding windows which we requested be opened because it was a very warm evening. They happily complied as they did when we asked for more of the wonderful bread and butter. Good food, good atmosphere, good service. Can't ask for more than that.
The reviews were quite mixed and now we understand why. The restaurant is warm and cozy as you step in. The menu contained many French dishes and we had the escargots and sweetbread appetizers which were rich and delicious, probably the best part of our meal. The mussels entree was okay. While the mussels were very tender and delicious, the sauce was over salted. My husband chose the salmon entree, delicious but had a little too much going on in the dish with the veggies with it, which masked the salmon. Think the dishes need to be better balanced in terms of flavors and textures. Still a good meal but we expected outstanding for the high price. Good wine list but markkups are pretty high there too.
We were disappointed with our evening at St. Jack's. It was extremely noisy and busy where we were seated right next to the kitchen. We could hardly hear each other talk. Our drinks were good as were the appetizers of lobster, liver pate & prawns. However, the dinner portion of quail was so small that it should have been an appetizer. It was missing the fois gra that it was supposed to be stuffed with & the delicata squash. The other entrees, bavette steak & the tuna were good. Desserts of chocolate cake, creme brulee & meringue? were fine. In the future, we will eat in the bar section at happy hour instead.
