    Was supremely disappointed with every dish other than the butter lettuce salad… went with the server’s recommendation and it was disgusting. We let the restaurant know it was a special occasion and nothing was done to make anyone feel special or celebrated, our server was not attentive and this experience has solidified that none of us will be returning.

    Ambiance and service was great but the food left me wanting. The dinner was fine but nothing really memorable other than being reminded of a 50 charge for a bauvette cut I could have done myself for half the price. Dessert was great- as a French place, it had the stereotypical staples but I didn’t like what I or my friend ordered. It’s like wanting a cake and getting something similar but ultimately being disappointed that it wasn’t cake. It wasn’t fulfilling enough, I suppose. The iced tea was spot on: nice and strong just wish I was given a larger glass.

    If only our server remembered to keep the bone from our New York steak - was looking forward to digging out all the yummy bits around the bone and to use it in chili, but she left it out of our doggy bag. :-(

    We had to sit on outside patio and it was cold. Heater ran out of propane but mgr replaced it. Food was average in quality and quantity and not worth the high prices. Beer was bottles, not draft. Probably won’t return.

    Wonderful dinner for 2. To be honest, we went for the to-die for fries and of course had a full meal. Bavette steak for me beautifully cooked. Mussels for my wife. Preceded by sharing the haricots vert a la moutarde. Ended with a shard baked Alaska. Waiter cautioned us on the Loire Valley Cab Franc saying it was made without sulfur and needed to breathe quite a bit so she opened it earlier than we needed to. She was right. Opened up fully half-way through the meal as the reductive funk blew off a bit (we have a winery). Bottom line…we’re going back.

    Enjoyed our dinner of mussels and steak. Best frites!! Wonderful butter lettuce salad ( a bit overdressed) enough to share. Efficient and helpful servers. Will return. Always enjoy dinner here. Only wish us more versions of mussels like Les Moules.

    This was our first visit and it was great! The chicken liver mousse was outstanding: great texture and flavor. The sweetbreads were perfectly cooked and a very large portion. The steak frites was cooked exactly as ordered and the fries were among the best we have ever had. The service was attentive and efficient. The wine list is fairly pricy by Portland standards but the three-glass "pots" are a good value. Highly recommended!

    The food was delicious and imaginative. The kitchen clearly cares about quality and is willing to take a few chances. The Gratin aux endives was super. Noise level was uncomfortably high when we arrived, but once a loud table near us left, it was possible to hear each other. I like the energy, and staff was attentive and courteous. We will be back. One tip: a member of our group had the steak and frites, and was dismayed that he couldn't have ketchup with his fries. Maybe not important to foodies, but I'm sure all of your patrons aren't foodies---and are a certain age, to boot.

    An absolutely superb dinner...as always...at St. Jack! We sat outside, and the ambiance was still lovely. Matthew was our server and he gave us excellent advice about the food and wine. And what a treat to have a wine list that actually had more French wines than American wines! We had a wonderful time, and we will certainly return!

    This was our first visit, having read the great reviews. On the whole, we were underwhelmed. The good news is that the pate was fabulous--velvety and savory, with excellent bread. Another slice of bread would have been nice. My wife's butter-lettuce salad was also first-rate. We both ordered the steak frites. It was a long time arriving, with sincere apologies from the waitstaff. The beef was quite good, but slightly cold, and not just because it was medium rare as requested. The fries, frankly, were mediocre in comparison to other great French restaurants in the Northwest, not to mention France. And the huge quantity was off-putting, especially since they were nothing special. (Wendy's are better!) In short, it was not a $50 entree. We passed on dessert, wishing for something less substantial than offered. They accommodated us with a dollop of melon sorbet for $5!

    Supposed to be one of the best restaurants in Portland so I came in with pretty high expectations. Everything was good, totally solid, while nothing was really amazing. Chicken (which I almost never order, cuz, I can only get so excited about chicken) was dry. Still lovely, but at that price I wanted to close my eyes in tasty revery at least once throughout the meal.

    Highlights included the Gougeres, the Foie Gras Tart, and the Pate En Croute. Our server Mel was not very personable and a little bossy which detracted from the experience. Everyone else was wonderfully welcoming.

    It is a lovely place - the service was GREAT - the meal was very good 1. oysters - DELICIOUS (if teeny tiny) The vinegar shallot dill pepper sauce was perfect and to die for! 2. bread DELICIOUS (a gentle sourdough - nutty and soft) 3. Marrow - small amount of marrow - MAYBE a tablespoons worth, and covered in corn (maybe to diminish the look of the amount of marrow?) 4. Oeuf en gele - VERY interesting - LOVELY presentation - curious mix of flavours, glad i tried it, but probably won't order again 5. Partner had the MUSHROOM VOL-AU-VENT - magnificent presentation but too much cheese (got soggy and goopy towards the end) unexpectedly lovely mushroom flavours 6. i came for the sweetbreads. Never had them in a large mass as was served, usually they are broken apart into morsels. It was good, and in an unusual paring with chilies. Not the best i have ever had but very good. 7. Drinks were GREAT the Manhattan served with a sidecar on ice MAGNIFICENT! And they kept my Lillet coming! 8. Ambience .....well unfortunately we were seated between 2 loudmouths - you know those guys who can't seem to speak above a shout, and LOVE the sound of their own voice - the life of the party! But that wasn't St. John's fault - just our bad luck. FINAL APPRAISAL - lovely place, will try it again, they have many interesting things on the menu which i would like to try. DO recommend!

    Everything was satisfactory until the waiter delivered the deserts to the wrong people. Two were to go, and only one was boxed. When we pointed this out he said it was on us as we messed up the order. He became miffed, and passively-aggressively took the misplaced deserts back to correct. He came back in about 30 seconds with one of the desserts dumped in a box. Good grief. If one is paying $50 for an entrée you expect decent service. This was beyond the pale and overshadowed the dinner for the 6 of us. We won't be back.

    Wow, I had such high expectations for this restaurant, when it was on Clinton, it was such a good to spot for a simple good meal. Nothing was simple and good … huh. Our service was a bit slow and a hint of an attitude was detected until the kitchen tripped up and couldn’t keep up with the pace. Then it got a bit better and a few more check ins. Since it took over two 1/2 hours to eat the meal. Oysters and mignonette were cold and delicious. Salad should have tasted like summer (nectarines and peaches) … yum, but instead tasted like salt and vinegar. Same with the little gem (I think it was little gem). Entree, gummy sweetbreads, they didn’t crisp up the flour coating and it was one big hunk of organ meat. Where were the crispy bite with the delicate flavor in soft but firm insides? Served with pepper, why? And I think lardon, but it was too raw to tell. The vou-au-vent we were hoping for a well seasoned light cream filling with oregon mushrooms, but instead it was thick and heavy in an overcooked pastry shell. The balance there needs to be perfection. The filling should absorb the pastry and make you want every last bite, not push the crusty shell to the side. Desert pass…. 100 bucks per person / no alcohol …. Wow.

    St Jack is my go-to restaurant for special occasions. It never fails on quality, consistency and a menu of well prepared french food. Items change seasonally and no matter what I try it is always a treat!

    Skipped Dessert:-( We did not enjoy St. Jacks.too many processed foods added to menu items. Corn in my Bone Marrow? This was bad the flavor of the marrow was lost in a plate full of processed corn. The stake tartar had to many processed fried onions The entire meal was substandard. The service was good.
