St. Elmo Steak House Ratings and Reviews
The staff was very attentive, with good wishes and an anniversary card on our arrival. Very nice table. Complimentary creme brûlée at the end. The food is very good - not the best steaks we’ve ever had, but solidly good. The small dishes accompanying the meal were very good, too. Their much touted shrimp cocktail is just TOO spicy - I almost choked. Be forewarned - order the sauce on the side! We weren’t the only ones to have this reaction.
I have lived in Indy 8 years now, and have always been told St. Elmo is the best. Finally made it there tonight for Valentine’s Day, and while the service was excellent... the steak was possibly the worse I have ever had. Got the 12oz filet, ordered medium rare. I cut into it, and it looked alright, maybe a bit over cooked, but immediately noticed that there was no juices coming from the steak at all. It cut tougher then any filet I have ever had... and tasted ultra meaty like it was cooked well well.. but was still pink... but was ultra dry... no flavor. The outside of the steak was cold, I put butter on it to add some kind of flavor... it didn’t even melt. I looked at my girlfriend who got an 8oz filet, asked her what she thought, she said it tasted like her steak was cooked in the microwave.
Neither of us are steak snobs.. we usually go to Texas Road House if that tells you anything, but frequent Morton’s, Ruth Chris, Sullivan’s, Ocean Prime, etc on special occasions.. and I much rather have paid $50 for one of Texas Road Houses $10 sirloins.
Maybe it was just a bad night, and yes we should have said something.. but just really really disappointed. :(
Our latest visit, for Valentines Day, was again memorable. Atmosphere was great with lower sound levels of conversations. Server was attentive but did not rush us. Steaks were very tender and cooked exactly as requested. The baked potatoes were among the best we have had. The place has been hyped and deserves the great reputation.
The best steak restaurant I have ever been to. Old time ambiance was fantastic. The entire staff makes you feel like the most important customer the minute you walk through door and throughout your entire dining experience. Service was simply outstanding. I only gave value 4 out of 5 stars due to the fact you better be ready to break out your wallet but trust me, "ITS WORTH EVERY PENNY."
This is undoubtedly the classiest eating establishment in Indianapolis and has been for years. The ambiance, valet parking, the special-touch service, the incredibly delicious food, and the wine list are to die for. This is our very "special occasion" restaurant, and we always look forward to our next visit!
In the past we have visited St. Elmo's a couple of times per year or so. Sometimes the waitstaff is good and sometimes not. We visited for Valentine's Day (the day before to beat the crowd) this year. Our waiter was pretty good, except he got mixed up on a couple of requests we made. I ordered a mild version of the shrimp cocktail, and he brought the regular, and then he took it back and someone poured ketchup on it and he brought it back. We asked for some more bread of a particular type, and we got another kind instead.
I ordered the filet mignon medium well, and was very specific, and when it arrived it was black on the outside but basically throughout it was raw with lots of red blood. I sent it back and they cooked it considerably more while I watched my wife eat her dinner. Her steak was also on the rare side, but she didn't want to say anything. She did eat extra slow, so I'm sure her bloody steak was cold before she finished it, because she was trying to wait on mine to come back so we could eat together. I felt so bad for her, because I have never seen her eat meat that was so rare.
The atmosphere is good, but at this point I'm not in any hurry to return, and will explore other dining options in the area for various occasions. We spent a total of $170 for the meal. If there had been a little more attention to detail, and especially if any effort had been made to cook the steak like we ordered, I would have been better satisfied. However, I left there feeling like we had received less than adequate service, and spent way too much for a bad product.
The service is always great, the steak is very typical, the shrimp cocktail is legendary and worth having but I think you used to get 5 shrimp and not 4. I think it is a place anyone coming to Indy should try but for those of us that live here, we can find a better steak
Have been here several times. Always consistently good. Best Shrimp cocktail on the planet if you like it hot! Solid steaks, great wine list, easy location. This is my go to in Indy. If I can't get into this location, they own the Harry and Izzy next door and you can get many of the same menu items.
There is a reason why St. Elmo's is still here after all these decades, and that reason is tradition. They deliver exceptional food and exceptional service in an exceptional atmosphere. I have brought business associates, my wife on our anniversary, friends and most recently my son prior to an ISO concert.
Was worth everything it took to go. Time, drive, money.
The food was great. And the prime rib was awesome, cooked perfect, big, thick. 38 oz. Wow..
Everyone was great. Our server was very attentive. Helpful.
Can't wait to go back. Perfect steak!!!!! The shrimp great, (I got the mild sauce,) the wedge salad was very tasty. And the bread basket.omg, very good.
Love, loved, loved dining there.
Well I made a special trip from FL to take my wife to ST Elmos just so happen to be a business convention in town too. I have been numerous times with excellent out come every time.
This time was an embarrassment. They sat us in a very drafty noisy corner in the first room. We ordered. Got our shrimp cocktail it was great. Ordered a Wedge salad split to share. WE got our navy bean soup and cold bread. Still no salad. Salad shows up I have a huge one wife has a half. Waitor said he lost a credit card causing the delay and just grabbed what was back there. Our food came with in a minute of the salad and it was cold steaks not cooked to temp even after sending one back. We left it at that and tried to enjoy it.
I reserved seating for 6 at St Elmo's for my boyfriend's birthday. His family members were there to surprise him, he thought it was just us. He was very surprised, the steaks were cooked perfectly and the shrimp cocktails were outstanding. The service was very great, and our server was easy to talk to and very attentive. I will be coming back for another special occasion!
We often visit Steakhouses in the Indianapolis are and this one was absolutely horrible. We had terrible service with a combination of bad food. I could have handled 1 or the other, but when you're paying $250 for 2 people, something should be good about your experience. My filet was so ingrained with gristle, I'm not sure my dog would eat it. When I said something to the waiter, he looked at my wife, asked how hers was, then walked away. We didn't see him again until he was dropping our bill off. Mashed potatoes were hot on one side and refrigerator cold on the other. Certainly will not be going back. There are lots out there. Avoid this one.
