Square One Restaurant is an American bar and eatery in Key West, Florida that has become quite popular. Beginning with the dumplings, one knows they are in for a unique dining experience when coming to this venue. Served six to an order, this finger food comes in a choice of duck, pork or spinach. Square One Restaurant is also known for its flatbreads. Sample the farmers market to get your fill of kale and walnut pesto, mushrooms and roasted garlic.
For something from the grill, you can order a burger. Square One Restaurant has several varieties, including the blackened mahi. Each is cooked fresh and grilled to order.
The restaurant was closed for no obvious reason, despite a confirmed reservation, (no sign on the door and no update on the homepage).
Didn't have a chance to eat there. We walked up and were told that the kitchen is closed even though we had made a reservation on open table. It was during July, which is a slower season for KW. I would have appreciated two things. 1) a phone call when the reservation was made to let me know prior to making our way over there. However, to their defense we made our reservation only a half hour before we got there. And 2) I didn't appreciate the "well I mean we Caaaaaaaaaan reopen the kitchen just for you.... But we are closed" Listen, I'm not going to beg to eat there. Overall, communication could be improved. The menu looked amazing just wish we had a chance to eat there.
We had outstanding service while dining at Square One. The food was very good, and the selection varied. Small plates were more than enough for an entree, or sharing. Ambiance is very nice, but the music was just a bit loud. We will definitely return
Great food! For any foodies out there you should stop at this place. We had the farmers market Flatbread to start (they ran out of short ribs). Seafood risotto, skirt steak, chicken, seafood pasta and burger were all great! Well prepared and they were accommodating for our kids.
I have been dining regularly at Square One for 25+ years and through 3 changes of owners.
The service and quality of food has been steadily tanking over the past year and my last meal there was terrible. I will not be returning.
My girlfriend and I were pleasantly surprised by the vegan options. The flatbread and veggie burger were both very good. Our waiter was friendly and efficient. The only criticism is that the room was a little warm. There were ceiling fans, but we had gotten used to the local restaurants offering an escape from the heat. 10 degrees cooler would have been great.
It was amazing!!!! We were on vacation and this restaurant was our favorite one of the entire week!!! Go here! You won't be sorry!
Great Gluten Free options! The Calamari was amazing. Worth a 2nd visit
Excellent mix of carnivore, vegan and organic choices, in a variety of plate sizes.
In a city of great restaurants - this one is ok, but not great. Probably better for a younger crowd with higher energy levels and not so much care about table conversation.
We had a group of 11, our server was excellent on top of everything. Food was very good as well. The stuffed Pork Chop was a hit at our table. We have already told our friends about Square 1 and we will definitely be back.
Mussels App & Seafood Risotto were fantastic!
The location is nice on a pedestrian mall. Food was very good and there was a nice variety on the menu. The service was excellent. It had a great wine happy hour.
Food was excellent, everything was amazingly prepared!!!
Since we were last at Square One, the restaurant has been renovated and seems to be catering more to a younger crowd. We were disappointed in the food, however our service couldn't have been better. The atmosphere is nice, it was a great place to chat with friends we hadn't seen in awhile.
Our tuna appetizer was the best thing we tried. We were looking forward to the beet salad, but found it to be mostly large pieces of kale and beets that tasted like they came from a can. My husband had the beef filet which he has ordered before and was not as impressed this time. I had the mussels and they were disappointing, some were not opened, those that were were very small and tough. The broth had very little flavor.
They have taken away the piano bar which is another reason we liked to go to Square One. Outdoor seating is available as before.
Our return visit was pleasant but not the experience we've had in the past. Instead of sumptuous food and excellent piano music, we enjoyed very good dinners with nice service. We will recommend Square One but will refrain from gushing.
Worst food. Risotto like wallpaper paste. First need to use arborio rice then with seafood don't add marscapone. Shrimp and grits swimming in grease. Beyond gross
An elegant restaurant in Key West. Great food!
We found Square One on Open Table after having a delay at a neighborhood competitor, and were very pleased with the find! The restaurant is located in a courtyard of businesses on the southern end of Duval Street, with several others - but we're glad we chose wisely. Square One is designed to cater to gastropub clientele, and is upscale, foody - successfully - featuring salads, flatbreads, sandwiches, appetizers, small plates and full dinners.
We were seated outside on the patio, which was quiet despite the address, on a warm night, and were greeted, seated and served with an attitude of "you're the bosses, but I'm here to help you!" We started with two of the House Signature Cocktails - we highly recommend the Lusty Nail, although the bourbon cocktails (we tried two) are also quite smooth.
For our meal, we opted for several small platters because we couldn't really make up our minds, and enjoyed their Devils on horseback, peppadew peppers wrapped in bacon and stuffed with almonds with cheese fondue and Maryland crab cakes for starters. Then we progressed to the Ahi tuna, the Key West Shrimp and Grits and pulled pork sliders (with plantains) on pretzel rolls.
A thoroughly pleasant late night sampler dinner in a restaurant that wanted to - and succeeded to please us both.
Shrimp and grits was fantastic!
We needed a quick meal on the way to the airport. They were very efficient, allowing 7 people to get in and out in just under an hour. The burgers were great, and overall the food was more consistent than my last visit.
Lovely location off Main Street. Friendly service, good food. Try the Daisy Mary rum cocktail.
Loved the bread service and lamb dumplings
Absolutely a wonderful experience. The hostess was Awesome, offered to seat us early. We walked around a bit, then she seated us immediately. Our server was very knowledgable, started us off with great cocktails. He clearly explained the specials, one of our group ordered the Grouper Special--Excellent. The other 3 of us shared the corn cakes, calamari, pork pot stickers, and the shrimp and grits. Food came out in timely manner and was GREAT. Can't say enough about how tasty the food was--We finished everything with difficulty but we're extremely satisfied. A great Key West experience, don't miss it
Absolutely horrible service and response. First small plates came out efficiently and were very good. It then took over 45 minutes to get three small plates, refreshed water and drinks. I tried to speak politely to the bartender asking for the manager and she was immediately confrontational and said we are just busy. Ridiculous! I spoke to hostess and she conveniently walked away. Meanwhile a party of three came in after us ordered at least 5 small plates, spaced out accordingly and ate and paid before we received our three small plates. There are so many places to eat in Key West and this is NOT one if them.
The waitress who served us in March last year remembered us, we thought that was pretty impressive considering how many customers go through their door each day.
Lobster Mac and cheese, seafood flatbread and mussels amazing!
Great find in Key West! Interesting menu with great range of choices! Really fun cocktails - all handmade! Delicious sangria! Loved the pork sliders. Great fried chicken sandwich. Would definitely return!
The menu was so full of dishes that are not your everyday fare , we had a difficult time choosing. Our group decided to order one of everything on the appetizer section and then one selection of the small plate section and we ended up having a "Tapas" style dinner. If you were to ask me what dish I liked the most, I would have a hard time picking. The Mussels probably would make the top of the list ( order bread so you can soak up the juices from the mussels). If you're a lover of eclectic food, try Square 1. It was the best food we had on Key West.
Square One has good food, free parking. And a great location. But with a serve who could have cared less. Example:" Do you wanna order? I've got other stuff to do..."
I ordered the Seafood Risotto, a personal favorite dish but never eaten at Square One; it wax absolutely delicious. There was lots of shrimp, scallops & at least a 6 oz piece of mahi on top. All wax perfectly prepared and the presentation was lovely. My husband ordered the yellow snapper wrapped in banana leaves with a side of gnocchi, tomatoes and spices. It too was truly delicious as well and the presentation was dramatic in the banana leaves. For dessert we shared a Key Lime pie preparation in a short glass that was great--wish I'd had one all to myself. Also we shared a half carafe of the Chardonnay and it was a good value and tasty too. Service was very leisurely paced without the sense that the kitchen was slow. I'd rather eat here than any of the "tourist traps" that abound in Key West. Reasonably priced for the excellent food, atmosphere and service.
Love this place, one of favorite spots in Key West. We went there to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday tonight. The service and food were excellent. (Locals from Marathon)
In our never ending search for good restaurants we went a bit off the beaten path to Square One. Off the beaten path because it is on the far end of Duval across Truman where most tourist don't venture. Quiet place in One Duval Square. We sat outside and it was nice, quiet and practically no foot traffic. Appeared to be mostly locals. The inside looks interesting with brick walls. The food was very good. They have small plates (like tapas size) as well as large plates, which most would consider a dinner size portion. I had the simple salad followed by Drunken Mussels and the Ahi Tuna - the muscles were really good with a spicy broth and the tuna was perfectly seared. My husband also had the simple salad followed by the seafood risotto which he thought was very good as well. The drawback is the service. It's not friendly. Our wait person acted like it was just a job, didn't engage or come back to find out if we needed anything or if there were any concerns. We are friendly people (as are most in Key West) and enjoy talking to our wait staff at least a little bit. I'm not sure I'd go back however I suggest you try it. The food is good and you may get more friendly service.
We were one of two tables in there. We (14 of us)sat unattended for 20 mins while our sever swept a and reset tables. It wasn't until my sister approached her asking if we should go to the bar.
Service was poor through out our stay.
Most of the dinners were locals in the service industry. We feel that we got the minimal service needed due to the sever knowing she'd get to auto grat. She would have gotten double that minimum had we received good service.
Also food was cold.
There were some really confusing and disappointing thing that I wish the restaurant to know about because I believe they have tremendous potential and real talent. I was excited to see a gin martini (with blue cheese olives) on the cocktail list -- is my absolute favorite and I've had them all over the world. I asked for the drink to be "heavily shaken" -- I like an ice cold martini. So the gin to vermouth ratio was way off, creating a very unpleasant taste. For some reason, they added a lemon peel to it (and forgot the olives in my Partner's drink altogether). Worst of all, it was stirred, not shaken so after 5 minutes in the Florida heat, was even more unpleasant than when it first came out. We both ordered an appetizer ("small plate") and a main. I ordered the calamari which was very very nice - Asian style with peanuts and just a touch of heat. For some reason they served my appetizer very quickly and my Partner's about 15 minutes later which was awkward. The waitress kept coming back to say it would be out soon and we gently commented that it was fine, so long as they could serve our main courses at the same time. A minute later the manager was over to somewhat defensively explain that everything in the restaurant was cooked to order. This was not an issue for us, they could have held my starter to come out at the same time.My Partner ordered the sea scallops with seafood struedel. We were shocked -- it was the size of two dishes. The scallops were slightly under cooked but not awful. There were way too many for a starter portion. They were all atop this somewhat bizarre (and yet delicious) layer of seafood and pastry. It was delicious---by itself. These two components did not go together. It was two huge dishes. My gnocci was great but really didn't need sliced grape tomatoes in the cream sauce. The worst part was that they put some microgreens spread atop it which ended up being like wet leaves in a puddle in the thick sauce of my pasta. I picked it out.
The place was packed but our server, Danny, handled it so well. He never rushed us, but was very attentive at the same time. By far the best service since being in key West. The chalkboard salad was huge and full of yummy beets and Kale.
My boyfriend and I went here while on vacation, this was a nice place tucked off of the main drag of Duvall Street. The food was very good.
From our initial greeting at the host stand, everyone was rude. As a party of 8, with a reservation, i woild expect the table to be ready for us, not ro habe to wait for it to be set.
We have dined here numerous times and, unfortunately, this was the last. Service was atrocious (a 20 minute wait for a mimosa refill? When the restaurant is more than half empty?) Food was ok, ranging from good (veggie scramble) to overcooked (burger).
Our server could not be bothered to take care of ys, instead
We were hugely disappointed. We have had mediocre service here before but this was just ridiculous.
Christmas Eve dinner ruined. Menu posted on open table very elegant. Menu posted in restaurant campy and I tasteful.
It was more like a passable chain restaurant than something creative and local. We sat outside for forty minutes before a morsel of food appeared at our table. We came for the vegetarian offerings. The veggie burger was very good. The watermelon salad was tasteless and almost all arugula. There are lots more interesting eateries available.
