We ate at 88 twice while staying at Spruce Point Inn. The dining room is elegant and the service is impeccable. Dining starts with a cocktail aperitif and a small appetizer. The first night was cerviche and the next was a lobster Rangoon. Our first night entree was halibut with corn and leeks and polenta. The dish was good but just a tad lacking in flavor. The roasted corn & leek helped flavor it up but the halibut was bland. The 2nd night my husband had the filet mignon which he devoured (also served with polenta and roasted brussel sprouts) and I had the duck breast with grapes which was wonderful and I practically wiped the plate clean. For starters, my husband had the clam chowder one night and fish chowder the 2nd night. He said the fish chowder was better than the clam. For my starters I had a Caesar salad which could have used a bit more lemon or garlic and a fall salad with greens, feta, poached pears & candied pecans which was wonderful.
88 is a dining experience spot and not a place to go if you just want to eat and go. Service is leisurely - attentive but not rushed. If you want to eat at 8pm, make a reservation for 7. It all takes a while. A special touch you can't get elsewhere at the Inn is you are given Morning Glory muffins at the end of your meal. They were our breakfast the next day and are just wonderful. Like a healthy carrot cake. Their regular breakfast muffins are good but not as good as these!
The dining room is lovely and they have a player piano, playing American songbook songs. The dining room does overlook the harbor but the sun had set by the time we ate (mid-October) so there was no view. It would be beautiful in the summer. They ask that you dress up a bit (collared shirts for men, dressy casual for women, no flip flops) and the setting does deserve that. We ate at the sister restaurant, Bogie's, which was also nice and is more casual but we dressed up for the 3rd night as I liked the menu at 88 better. A lovely spot.
The restaurant and view are beautiful.
The food is very good.
The service was poor. We have eaten here before and had excellent service which kept us coming back. We had a different waitress on this visit who was very nice but not the best waitress. This really put a damper on the meal for us. We don't plan on going back.
The Spruce Point Inn is renown for its elegant dining in a semi-formal setting with a gorgeous view of the outer harbor's light house. Their attention to detail and their level of service is top notch and consistent. My wife and I celebrated our thirty-second anniversary with dinner at the 88 Restaurant.
When you visit Boothbay Harbor to sail, to golf, to shop, or to lounge absorb the beauty of the shoreline you can do no finer than dining or staying the Spruce Point Inn.
Food was unremarkable. Severs really didn't know the ingredients or the questions to ask the kitchen aren't translated well. Nothing was hot and after my steak was sent back for a little longer cooking the sides were ice cold. Salad was room temperature. Ice cream tasted re-frozen and cheesecake was laden with amaretto but not described as such. Wine was great.
We enjoyed this special restaurant during our stay at Spruce Point Inn. Service was lovely. We enjoyed a complementary cocktail and amuse bouche before dinner, and left with beautifully packaged muffins for breakfast the next day. The food was delicious. I loved the lobster. which arrived without its shell with fresh corn and potatoes. The key lime pie was very good too!
For fans of the Maine coast this resort/spa has a wonderful surprise in store for the discerning diner who is looking beyond the usual tourist spots. Located just south of the Boothbay Harbor town on the western side of the inlet, dinner at sunset isn't on the menu but available every clear night - at no extra charge. The setting soothes ones senses and sets the stage for a rewarding and superb dining experience. A varied menu provides ample choices, all served by an attentive and affable staff. Beautifully prepared and presented by the chef and his team, there are also surprise items that are delivered to your table, compliments of the house. Be prepared to have a leisurely experience of at least two hours for your meal - a welcome relief these days of rushed table experiences in many restaurants. Nuff said. Treat yourself.
Started off very nice with appetizers and then we waited forver for the main course. When we finally finished dinner and asked for the check, the amount was incorrect, with the mistake being billed for the wrong glass of wine. The manager tried to tell me that I had ordered a differnt wine. I then asked for the menu and had to show her what I ordered.
Very unpleasant. And we were not the only table to experience such a long wait.
Food generally good but a few hiccups, such as undercooked rolls with raw dough. Then the server took an incredibly long time to give me a new roll even though seen giving other tables rolls. Service applied by multiple people so lacked continuity and we sat waiting at numerous times throughout the meal probably because one server thought the other was doing the job. Server brought warm white wine and poured it before remembering to chill it. One server would come over and describe food and choices, but then another would come to take order and give contradicting information. Final straw was overhearing our original server offer whipped cream with blueberry crisp to the adjacent table, but when I asked for whipped cream instead of ice cream to one of our many other servers, I was told that was not an available option, so I had my blueberry crisp plain.
A lovely way to spend our wedding anniversary at the Spruce Point Inn. We were seated with a picturesque view of the ocean, the food was incredible (especially my scallops) and the service was amazing. We loved the entire 2-hours of excellent food and drinks.
Executive Chef Eric Flynn and his culinary team spin creative magic out of locally-sourced ingredients, especially right-off-the-boat seafood. And don't skip dessert! Pastry Chef Ashley Wiecek's creations are delicious. Gracious friendly service in a softly-lit space overlooking the water. A memorable place to dine.
Ate there Sat night May 20 a few days after they opened for the season. The food was great the view spectacular. The service needs improvement and expect this will happen shortly as the staff gets to work together. The staff just started work for the season here as the resort just opened for the season on Tuesday and they need to get there act together . I would go back again and give them another try. The $30 lobster dinner was great value and the lobster was delicious.
We wanted to eat somewhere special for our anniversary trip to boothbay harbor. The service was great and for a short time we were the only people in the restaurant. We err seated by the window and we were able to watch the sunset which was beautiful. The food was good and the wine selection which our waitress helped us chose was very good. A loud couple without a reservation ended up coming mid our meal which lessened the dining experience slightly as they seemed only interested in drinking and talking loudly. This is no fault of the restaurant though. It was a pricey meal but tasted good and my husband and I both enjoyed our experience there. Overall a nice choice for a romantic meal for two.
EXCELLENT SERVICE! FOOD WAS PREPARED AS ORDERED AND BEAUTIFULLY PLATED. GOOD PORTIONS. LITTLE EXRA TOUCHES MADE THE MEAL - COMPLIMENTARY PREDINNER DRINK; CHEF APPETIZER TASTING; HOMEMADE MUFFIN BAGGED TO TAKE AWAY AFTER DINNER. ALL AROUND DINING THERE WAS A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE.
The meal at SPI was a special occasion, and we were not disappointed. From the complimentary appertif, amuse bouche and then the entre, everything was very tasty and well presented. The very professional and friendly staff made the experience delightful. We highly recommend this restaurant.
Food was great and service was excellent. Only issue was the 2 person table was too narrow and too low to comfortably get your legs under the table in a normal sitting position based on the height of the seats. Unfortunately there was no staff at desk upon leaving to share this feedback. Otherwise the experience was wonderful.
