Spotted Donkey Cantina at El Pedregal, Boulders Resort Ratings and Reviews
Jalepeno Shooters were wonderful - lightly breaded, and filled with flavor. The mean with the pork tenderloin medallions over a bed of macaroni and cheese and with an ancho sauce was bursting with yumminess! The center the restaurant is in looks like a ghost town but the restaurant is a great surprise! Love the cute donkey paintings and the full decor!
We are staying at the Boulders Resort and had dinner here our first night. The Cantina Shooters are incredible. Served with a cilantro buttermilk sauce in a shot glass, not too heavy and the jalapeño poppers are so flavorful. We also had the filet fajitas and they were melt in your math good. Would recommend to anyone!!
As AZ natives, my wife and I agree that this place serves the best Mexican food that we have every had in the metro-Phoenix area. We are definitely newly-discovered customers for life! The carnitas green chili chimichanga was enough for two meals and the flavor was out of this world. The staff is uber-friendly and the service is comparable to a fine dining establishment. We will be taking my mother-in-law for her birthday next month and will look forward to her opinion (Mexican food is her favorite). Kudos to the Spotted Donkey Cantina!
We enjoyed the restaurant but the food is fairly heavy as southwestern can be. They had some interesting dishes to choose from. My husband had the mac and cheese with pork and loved it. I had the chile relleno and enjoyed but would have preferred it more if it wasn't stuffed with rice.
Food was average Mexican style. Service wasn't very good. 4 tables seated after us got their food before us. I think one of the servers grabbed our order for another table. The orders were exactly the same but ours was placed 10 minutes before theirs. The gentleman with refilling water glasses was on point.
Nice décor. Bar service was awesome as we waited for our table on the patio to be ready. We then went to sit on the patio & had no waiter and were forgotten about entirely as we watched everyone around us get service. It took 20 min to get our menus. Finally they found a waiter for us & he was visibly annoyed he had to tend to our table. He never returned to take our order. Another 20 min went by and we flagged down a waitress (Kelly) and she took care of us from there on out. She comp'd our appetizer and per management, gave us a discount on the overall dinner due to poor and lack of service. Chips and Guacamole were delicious. Fajitas were decent. The poblano relleno was very good. Tequila shots ranged from $11 and up and were poured exactly as 1oz shots and not a drop more.
2 tables next to us had issues with their service and/or orders. One lady returned her fajitas and just wanted to the tab after that. At this point we were questioning why we even came here and contemplated on going to another restaurant at the resort. But we stuck it out. The restaurant is a nice set up and has a great feel; however the service was probably some of the worst I have ever had in my dining experiences.
This restaurant has a new Chef! He came out and greeted us personally and generously assisted us with gluten-free and dairy free choices. He made a special batch of Gluten Free corn chips for us and will do the same for others who require GF dining. He also advised which items to avoid and how he could best provide an excellent dinner for patrons who have challenges with allergies. He went out of his way to greet other patrons around the restaurant. Our waitress, Crystal was a delight . This is a great neighborhood restaurant for us.
My wife and I had Friday night date. Love Mexican food. We were seated in a remote corner of dining room next to three boisterous, incessantly giggly ladies whose noise annoyed me when trying to order. They later quieted down, fortunately. We passed 10 empty tables to get to our table. The food was excellent, but chips and salsa were extra (?). Our server was ok but seemed hurried and easily annoyed. Oh, well. We'll give the Spotted Donkey a second chance sometime. They claim to be a part of the Boulders Resort (number one in AZ), but don't act like it.
Chips and salsa and the queso was very good. Ordered chimichanga, which came with black beans in it. I'm allergic to beans. Please specify on the menu that bean are in the dish, as opposed to on the side. Service was slow and poor. This was especially irritating since I have family of six and was automatically charged with a 20% gratuity, the service did not warrant that.
Food was good, server was awful. Once our food was served he never came back to the table except to give us our check. There were six of us and we were planning on a late enjoyable evening. Instead we left after getting our checks. We eat out once a month locally, but won't be going back here because of the poor service.
Spotted Donkey is consistently good and our most recent dinner there was no exception. We took another couple with us and they enjoyed their meal as well. The service was great. I highly recommend the Silver Coin margaritas and the El Burro Pinto tacos. No bad choices though.
