Spotted Donkey Cantina at El Pedregal, Boulders Resort Ratings and Reviews
Spotted Donkey is one of our 'go to' spots. The food is delicious. I love the fajitas and the salmon tostada is also excellent. Good selection of beers. They have some very fine tequilas although they can get pricey. Price is about average for this area which is a bit upscale. In the fall and spring, the patio is a great. During the fall/winter/spring make a reservation as it can get crowded.
The restaurant is very hard to find after dark if you are not familiar with the area. It is located in a shopping mall on the second floor. The restaurant décor is nice and our male server was efficient. The guacamole appetizer was good but expensive and the wine list had a few good red wines to choose from. We found it a little strange that chips and salsa were not served and the dishes we ordered included rice but no refried beans. The chile Rellenos and fish tacos were both good.
I wanted to like this place. It's a lonely restaurant in what was once a thriving shopping area and now is still a lovely property but empty of tenants. But when 2/4 of us think the enchiladas are bad, that's not a good sign. Lack of flavor and luke warm temps doesn't get it. Just very mediocre food. To their credit the guacamole was tasty, but we could have used more chips. Service was fine, but food is main event so it's not worth returning.
We've eaten at the Spotted Donkey several times and last night's meal was the least satisfactory in all our visits to the restaurant. It seems there was a new chef in place and we found the food less well prepared than before. The calamari had to be sent back because it was way over cooked. My wife's enchiladas seemed to be baked in a over heated oven as the tops were charred but the insides were not hot. We won't go back until the chef is either changed or learns his business.
Our group of seven recently enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Spotted Donkey. The margaritas are top notch and the food is consistently excellent. Our server was great. The Roasted Chili Pork Stew made with Hatch, New Mexico chili is especially tasty.
Jalepeno Shooters were wonderful - lightly breaded, and filled with flavor. The mean with the pork tenderloin medallions over a bed of macaroni and cheese and with an ancho sauce was bursting with yumminess! The center the restaurant is in looks like a ghost town but the restaurant is a great surprise! Love the cute donkey paintings and the full decor!
We are staying at the Boulders Resort and had dinner here our first night. The Cantina Shooters are incredible. Served with a cilantro buttermilk sauce in a shot glass, not too heavy and the jalapeño poppers are so flavorful. We also had the filet fajitas and they were melt in your math good. Would recommend to anyone!!
As AZ natives, my wife and I agree that this place serves the best Mexican food that we have every had in the metro-Phoenix area. We are definitely newly-discovered customers for life! The carnitas green chili chimichanga was enough for two meals and the flavor was out of this world. The staff is uber-friendly and the service is comparable to a fine dining establishment. We will be taking my mother-in-law for her birthday next month and will look forward to her opinion (Mexican food is her favorite). Kudos to the Spotted Donkey Cantina!
We enjoyed the restaurant but the food is fairly heavy as southwestern can be. They had some interesting dishes to choose from. My husband had the mac and cheese with pork and loved it. I had the chile relleno and enjoyed but would have preferred it more if it wasn't stuffed with rice.
Food was average Mexican style. Service wasn't very good. 4 tables seated after us got their food before us. I think one of the servers grabbed our order for another table. The orders were exactly the same but ours was placed 10 minutes before theirs. The gentleman with refilling water glasses was on point.
