Always good!
The food and atmosphere were wonderful. I did have one issue. My table was against a wall with a painting on it. The painting's frame stuck out a good 6 inches from the wall. I smacked my head twice getting in and out of the booth. The table next to me she just hit the back of her head three times. I cannot believe this issue has not been addressed. It's obvious this issue has happened to many people before me. Reframe the painting at an appropriate distance from the wall to keep your customers more comfortable.
We were staying at the Boulders and choose this restaurant having read reviews and also not wanting to drive away from resort. It is not on the resort proper and one must drive there; after realizing that we decided to go anyway but were incredibly disappointed with the food. Sub-standard Tex-Mex fare at best. I had a Mahi taco, the fish itself was just not eatable it was so overcooked and stale. I was actually afraid to eat it. My husband had a burrito, the standard belly-busting plate that was covered with so much cheese that you couldn't find what you were really eating. Everything was grease.
We love the “Donkey” 10 min. away so that’s great. Food is consistent. Everything was delious . Salmon cooked perfect. I’m allergic to corn chips so they make me a couple of fried flour tortillas so I can enjoy their yummy guacamole. Service excellent. Thanks John. Looking forward to our next visit. Sit outside. 👍🏻
We love this place !!! We had dinner and drinks with friends that just moved to town and had such a great time out on the patio !! We started with appetizers of chips/guacamole/salsa, had a few rounds of cocktails, and ordered a wonderful meal !!! We didn't realize that we were the only ones left in the restaurant, yet the staff never "hurried" us or made mention of it !! We will DEFINITELY be back !!! The casual setting, wonderful outdoor seating for watching the sunset, and the delicious food makes for a perfect combination !!! Thanks Spotted Donkey !!! We also frequented your restaurant on Father's Day with reservations, and although it was understandably busy, we had a fabulous experience on that occasion as well !!! Keep up the great work !!! Staff is FANTASTIC !!!!
Service was very poor.
Food mediocre.
Place has gone straight downhill since
the Boulders purchased it.
Used to love it. Will not go back.
Food was good...had to go get my waiter to get a drink..didn't really feel I was important as a customer.
Food was way to salty but very good. It impacted the meal.
Great Mexican food with generous portions
Dominic and John are the 2 best servers and wait staff
Kitchen is awesome at accommodating any
food allergies or concerns
Susan the Manager always checking that everyone is happy
Even the people who help clear the plates and fill your water glass
have a smile and a "Hello" How are you?? Definitely a neighborhood atmosphere
Food was very good but entrees were a bit more expensive than other higher quality Mexican restaurants. Menu is also somewhat limited. Drinks were excellent and tasty. Fully expect to visit restaurant again but not one of my Phoenix favorites.
This restaurant was ok. Glad they are on Open Table to be able to get reservations. It is pretty difficult to find. We had to drive around for a while.
We love this place and always take the opportunity to take friends for their first time. We always recommend the Pork Tenderloin dish over mac and cheese. It is outstanding.
The décor is very nice. It all adds up to a great dining experience.
Great Food, Great Service, Great patio!
Always love this place. One of my favorite date night places.
Great atmosphere
Wonderful service
Dominic incredible
Attention to detail
And adhere to food allergies
Go here
You will not be disappointed
A must in Scottsdale/ carefree
for
Mexican cuisine
We sat out on the patio in the later evening, which was wonderful. However, when we asked to have the heater lit for a little extra warmth, they were unable to get it going (low propane?) and there wasn't another very good option. So that was disappointing. The food was very good--great basket of chips and three different salsas, and the guac was terrific too. It was a very relaxing, lovely atmosphere. Drinks were excellent!
Here is my review:
Upon arrival at 5:15 PM for our 5:15 reservations made through OpenTable we were denied a table due to the fact that no reservation was received from Open Table!!! If I did not have my confirmation that I printed out we would have been denied a table. I displayed the print out of the reservation and they apoligised stating "Oh you went through Open Table and they SCTREW up on getting reservations to us all the time".
So good bye and good ridence, I am done with Open Table!

Everything about the restaurant is above average it’s not memorable but you would definitely go back
Fun restaurant to eat at while staying at the Boulders
The Spotted Donkey is our fav Mexican restaurant!
We love the ambience, the service and their delicious Enchiladas.
The salmon tostada is outstanding. Had it a second time and still very good. Others had tacos & fajitas which they enjoyed. Only drawback is it is a bit noisy.
Very interesting restaurant. Good food and good service.
Huge portions and more American Mexican than genuine spicy Senoran border feast. Still very good though
There were 5 of us for dinner. The restaurant is upstairs at El Pedregal, an office - shopping complex at the Boulders in north Scottsdale. The complex lookis like a ghost town with many vacant stores but the restaurant is lively. We would have liked to sit on the patio but it was full. So we were seated towards the back of one of the smaller dining areas. Unfortunately it was uncomfortably warm in the room. As the weather in Scottsdale is just starting to warm up, maybe the restaurant did not want to run their air conditioning yet. Service was fine. Our party tried enchiladas, fajitas, chilies rellenos, tacos. The food was served piping hot and everyone enjoyed their meal. In fact, my enchiladas were very good. My objection about the meal is that they charge for chips and salsa ($8) for an ok portion (not really enough for 5 people). They were good and the 3 different salsas were also excellent. But I don't like paying extra for chips at a Mexican restaurant. I'm glad we tried it and if you happen to live in north Scottsdale or Carefree, it's worth the trip. Make sure you get an outside table when the weather is nice. But if you are not in the area, there are plenty of other Mexican restaurants that we like better like Jalepeno Inferno, The Mission and Barrio Queen (downtown).
Always excellent. Especially the margueritas. Nachos are great to share. Love the chopped salad and fried calamari. A local gem
My friend and I enjoyed the lunch we had together with Joaquin as our server.
Scott came over and we had a GREAT conversation with him and we were met
at the door by Frank who was most gracious. The fajitas were delicious, as always
and my friend had the enchiladas, which were enough for two. The people there
are so friendly, a guest always feels he/she is part of the family of The Spotted
Donkey! What a friendly neighborhood restaurant, which is part of The Boulders-
WHAT A TREAT!
We had a frozen strawberry margarita and a traditional margarita to start with the Donkey Nachos (we live these and order them every time). Then we split the Mahi mahi tacos. Everything delicious, attentive service. Lovely outdoor dining patio. Good value for the price.
All was good
Have been to this restaurant a number of times now and every time I feel rushed. Hurry up order, and in 5-7 minutes, the food arrived. The food is good, but a greater selection of seafood/chicken dishes would be appreciated, as an expanded wine list. I like this little restaurant and recommend it often, but a little more laid back vibe would be great. Hostess was absolutely flat - no personality at all.
Bad service. Food mediocre. Needed to constantly find someone for water, or check, or needs with dinner. Not rushing back. We used to like it here but it went downhill.
Loved everything about the restaurant, food, service and price! Highly recommend!
We had a very nice meal here. Margaritas and Queso Fundido to start. Hatch Chile Pork Stew and Carne Asada as entrees. The service started out slow but once we got their attention it was fine. Glorious sunset as we were leaving. Would go again.
Great food! Very large portions. Will return!
Service was not very good and the food was terrible .I'm a local Cave Creek We brought our friends there for brunch and we were not impressed and would not go back again food was terrible presentation was terrible.
Terrific place, just be sure to order the donkey nachos!
Always love it. It is our "go to" when out-of-town company comes and wants great Mexican food. We make sure to go every few weeks.
We were seated in the room that was not in the main dining room.. Great if you want a more intimate environment and less noisy
John was our server and did an excellent job as usual..
and
Susan the manager Always comes by the greet you and
check on your food
A must for Mexican food in Scottsdale.
More margarita then anywhere with other drink options as well
Everything was good except had to wait for awhile after our meal just to pay. Normally would not be a big deal but we’re eating w/ 3 young children so they don’t have a lot of patience to hang around after the food is finished.
HAVE BEEN HERE 100 times, always wonderful great food wonderful employees
Prompt, thoughtful and attentive service. Not rushed between appetizers and dinner, even though they had people waiting for the patio. Food came out hot and delicious. On a weekend I could only eat on the patio - inside too lively and noisy for me.
