We have been to Spotted Donkey many times and have always enjoyed the restaurant. We decided to take our friends for dinner there last night and it was such a disappointment!
Our table was below the AC pipes that dripped continuously on our table and on our guests. The server would periodically mop the pipes above us, only for the dripping to start again and since the restaurant was full we couldn’t move our table.
The service was fairly slow. We were overcharged for chips and salsa. One of our guests got their food 15 min after the other meals, while our dishes got cold.
Sadly, our friends don’t want to dine at the establishment again after the poor performance and we had given such high remarks previously.
It will be awhile before my family will want to return, as well.
An across-the-board exceptional Mexican cuisine dining experience. From the light chips and amazing salsas to the subtle flavors in the tacos and fajita's, this was Mexican fare taken to another level. In addition, our server was outstanding, making for an overall excellent experience.
We heard about this restaurant and decided to try it. The ambiance was fabulous
The pork stew was mediocre at best. Never that meal again.
We love spotted Donkey, food is always great and atmosphere is great.
We dine regularly at Spotted Donkey. It is a local favorite. This time, as usual, the food and service were excellent. I highly recommend it.
Had a great time and the food was awesome. I had forgotten how much I loved their guacamole.
Spotted Donkey is a fun little restaurant with great food, amazing margaritas, and great service. We will keep going back!
Great service friendly staff
Such a fun place to eat with awesome service. We went two nights in a row while staying at the Boulders. Very reasonable prices and high quality food. Everything we tried was excellent!
Loved the beer battered Mahi Mahi tacos and the burger was delicious! We had churros for dessert that had a yummy caramel dipping sauce. Great ambience too. We ate there as we were staying at the Boulders Resort which is gorgeous and the Spotted Donkey is on the resort property.
It was just ok. Service was good, noise level was good, presentation of the food was good but nothing special. the decor looks very tired.
Service and food were disappointing!
Scheduled a birthday celebration which staff forgot despite several reminders.
Restaurant only 1/3 full.
Everything about this place is great… except the noise. It can get loud when they’re busy, but the food makes it more than worth the volume!
Have eaten here before…wasn’t up to usual tasty standards. Chopped salad was bland The poppers didn’t come in the usual shot glasses. Our waiter not as attentive and a bit snarky. Everything else was great.
Food was great - we’ll go back.
Very good food and service.
Not your typical watered-down for Americans Mexican food. Potent flavors and very delicious. This is a top-shelf Mexican restaurant, for sure. Will repeat!
Chimichanga was great, very crispy outside, would have liked rice and beans with it.
Been coming here 20 years…never disappoints! Thank goodness they have survived when nothing else seems to in El Pedegral
Our server was very attentive and gave excellent service; however, the staff who delivered our meals was not friendly, did not bring plates or silverware. Food was good but not excellent. Overall, we were satisfied but some soft music would add to the ambiance on the patio.
Great service! Food was a little spicy…
Great food great service as always!!
My meal was Ok, my Wife’s meal was better
No free chips and salsa?
Every time we visit Phoenix we have a date night at Spotted Donkey, we’ve been doing it for over 10 years
You owe it to yourself to make plans to go there…you won’t regret it!
The nachos were EXCELLENT! Service was great. Waiter was very attentive and timely to requests. The drinks were good too! Would definitely recommend.
Service was good. First time I have had to pay for a Basket of Chips and Salsa and if you get Guac that makes it $19, Had the Fajitas which were fair but did not come with any Beans or Rice.
We come here every time we visit Scottsdale. They never disappoint. Everything was great. Eddie our server was awesome!
The AC unit was out in the small side room & it was 104 in there. No discount offered, no manager came to apologize. They didn’t try to move us into cooler room.
Food was great but the service meh.
Food was terrific. Service was spot on also. Nice ambiance.
Excellent food, delicious drinks, impeccable service, accommodating hostess and reasonably priced. Must go
We dined at the Spotted Donkey 2 weeks ago and had excellent beef tacos and appetizer. Based on this experience we invited another couple and I can only describe the food as marginal. The beef tacos were so salty and without flavor as to be inedible. The simple chip and dip was served with 3/4 of the chips crumbled and unusable. The quesadilla appetizer was tiny and again the chips were shredded. The cheese was tasteless, oily and too liquid. We sent them back and they never returned. My beef fajita turned out be more like a vegetable soup than a beef filler. To my shock there was not a single piece of beef in the entire dish, merely a hand full of thinly sliced pork sausage pieces. Had we not been entertaining guests I would have sent everything back and left. BTW, all this dining pleasure came with a $147.00 tab. I think it's time the Boulders stopped cheapening and down sizing their meals. Flavor is easy, value is easy. We received none of these.. Very poor value. There are much better Mexican restaurants in this town. Choose one of them.
Have visited many times in the past. Still excellent. Good and efficient service. Food always arrives promptly and HOT. Great place that I recommend.
We LOVE the Spotted Donkey!! We ate there 4 nights in a row!!
It was happy hour and we were charged regular prices. When we asked about it, we were told we didn’t ask for happy hour menu. We were also charged 20% service fee (gratuity) for having 5 guests. They didn’t work for a tip. No napkins, plates, etc. Very disappointed.
Great food and fabulous service from Romeo
I love the food and love the ambiance. The prickly pear margaritas are to die for!
This was quite possibly the worst Mexican restaurant dinner I’ve had as of today. The food all tasted like reheated leftovers, and based on their lack of ability to alter the ingredients in a dish - they likely were mostly premade. Even the margaritas were in need of improvement, but when we asked for them to be made a bit sweeter (they tasted like straight lime juice and tequila) we were told by our server that they were premade so she could bring some agave for us to add on our own. That was where we should have just ended our experience, but, unfortunately, we stayed.
I had the carne asada which I had to send back. The meat was mushy and far over cooked for being ordered medium rare. It honestly tasted like spicy dog food. My parents had the fajitas, which one would think would be hard to ruin, and couldn’t alter the “beef and sausage” selection to be only beef since it was already cooked together. Just in case you missed that…our server told us that the fajitas were already cooked and just warmed with the vegetables prior to service. My husband had the enchiladas and was hard pressed to tell the difference between the beef and the carnitas. Carnitas are not supposed to have the taste and texture of pulled pork. I ordered the Chile rellenos as a replacement for the carne asada I sent back and that meal was equally as bad, but I could not bring myself to send back two dinners in one evening.
It is safe to say I cannot understand how people are repeat customers of this restaurant - the food was horrible! Our server was nice, but she was painfully slow. All in all it was an awful experience.
Our waiter, Romeo, was superb. Outstanding attention to detail about the food & margaritas! Excellent service- would definitely recommend the Spotted Donkey, ask for Romeo!!
