Splashes at Surf & Sand Resort Ratings and Reviews
We were staying at Surf & Sand for a conference and had dinner at Splashes because we were in a time crunch to get to an event later in the evening. The ambiance and service were amazing, but the prices and portion sizes were not.
First, the prices are what you'd expect from a resort sitting on the coast. $15 drinks and $50 steaks. I knew I was sacrificing some money for the convenience (and view). But the $50 filet I ordered must have been about 4oz. It was literally the smallest steak I have ever had in my life. It came on a potato puree with a couple small vegetables. No sides. I'm glad I ordered the salad as well.
At the end of the day, I had one drink, a caesar salad, and the filet, and was still very hungry after my meal. And I was $120 poorer.
Very disappointed in the food quality and choices from their special menu for New Year’s Eve. We made a special trip and arrangements. For $400 for both my wife and I, we expected something better and left disappointed. We’ve eaten at the Splashes bar just below the restaurant and loved the food. Won’t be eating at this restaurant anymore.
We'd asked for a window because we were celebrating our anniversary. When we were arrived, for our 6:15 reservation we were cheerfully told that we had a window table, but only until 8 pm when another group had reserved that space. I guess the waiter knew about it too because the pacing was "brisk" to say the least. The unsubtle rushing by the waiter made the experience a little bit annoying. The food and ambiance were great, just wish we'd had a little more time to savor the experience.
This was my first time a the Surf and Sand and they did not disappoint. We had reservations, we were running a little late, we called and they were quick to accommodate our request to arrive 1/2 later. When I placed the reservation, I requested a patio window seat, which of course they also accommodated beautifully. Our Server was Johanna (spelling?), who didn't miss a beat. She was very upbeat, cheerful and attentive to our needs. Then the food came.........OMG, the best octopus I've ever had. Scallops, salmon, oysters, salad, New York cheesecake, everything was spectacular. I'll definitely be returning to the Surf & Sand. Thank you!
Dishes were very good, but the service was sketchy. Problem appeared to be restaurant management or in the kitchen more than our waiter. The dining room wasn't that full. Twice servers brought salads to our table after we'd already finished ours, not knowing at which table they belonged. Also, we heard service complaints at several other tables. Out entrees took 1/2 hour to arrive. Later, the manager come to our table and asked how our meal was (first appearance by him). After telling him the service was sketchy, he offered a comp dessert (creme brulee, which was also very good) and any other dessert from the menu we wanted. Probably won't be returning here.
Made a reservation for a birthday dinner for four. Upon entering we were asked whose birthday it was and told her. Were seated at the window with menus. Took too long for waiter to come over and take drink order. Received drinks. Took at least 25 minutes for waiter to come back and take our order. He was no where to be seen. One soup was brought in reasonable time. After at least 25 more minutes we saw the waiter and asked where our food was. Within less than four minutes, the food arrived and it was not as hot as it should have been, so it was obvious that it was sitting and he just then thought to go look for it. Did not want to send it back as you never know what they do in the kitchen with sent back food. Bill arrived. No birthday dessert. Asked the waiter about birthdays and he then said he did not know about any birthday and ran to bring a creme brulee. It was fine, but it should have been brought before the bill and we all might have had coffee. I will not go back to Splashes even though the view is gorgeous.
Each time we go back, the experience is a bit more disappointing. Food is only so-so in quality, presentation and skill. This time, they brought a worse vintage of the wine we selected; luckily we caught it before they opened the bottle. Prices are outrageously high for the food and service. The ambience and view are always the best part of the night.

Splashes restaurant has a gorgeous view of Laguna Beach. My daughter and I made a reservation for Christmas Day lunch. The service was very slow -- the lunch there cost us $202 and food was not very good. We were seated on a patio and weather was cold. I had a virgin Mary, my daughter had club soda. If we had ordered wine, it would have cost $50 per person extra. We sat waiting for our entrees for 30 minutes. The fish dishes were served with little bits of vegetables which we could not distinguish. The dessert was the only good item. It was very confusing when we asked for a parking validation -- we had to go to the hotel concierge. He said, "You owe us $8.00 unless you would rather go to the parking attendant and pay $20." Terrible ripoff. $202 bill was without tip.
Great service, great food & beautiful view! I came here with my family on Christmas Eve, and all the employees were so friendly! They were more than accommodating to me & my cousin’s food allergies.. the chef even made us our own special appetizer (pictured below)! I would absolutely recommend this place to everyone.
The meal started well, with the waiter answering all of our questions about the menu. However, after that things were not so good from a place that should be at the top of their game. One of the wait staff bumped our champagne chiller and some poured out. They fixed this by bringing us each a flute of champagne without having to ask. Just a few minutes later, another one of the wait staff took our unfinished bottle of champagne to the back. A few minutes later, the manager was walking around and asked us if everything was good so we told him about the champagne being taken away and he looked dumbfounded. Our meal came out without the side we ordered, which we had to ask for it to be brought to us. For the price of the entire meal and experience, it was not really worth it.
I came for dinner to celebrate my son birthday. I put a note when I made the dinner reservation which for a special birthday celebration for my son. He was so happy knowing to have a nice dinner and a tiny cake with candles after dinner for his birthday.... Unfortunately they did not mention anything about birthday nor asking for the occasion of the dinner.. the host at front only asked for the last name of the reservation and took you to the table -that’s all ..... The waiter did not ask anything either and didn’t get any notice from front host that dinner supposed to be a special birthday for my son.
Very very disappointed and I could see in my son face. He surely felt very disappointed as I felt the same way and Surely he was thinking for why I did not put attention for his birthday which that’s why we came for his birthday and I did the reservation few days before his birthday ☹️ With special request for his birthday occasion🙁
I feel this place is not organized at all and does not put attention of the request for their guest ☹️
You can’t have a bad time when you are enjoying a glass of wine with the view of the sand, the waves and the smell of the salty air. So my review is biased because the surrounding is so enjoyable! The food was excellent and the service was great. Highly recommended if you are looking for a ocean front restaurant with great food and unforgettable view. Order the Brussel Sprouts and the Crispy Octopus. Both excellent!
Love the restaurant and the setting...sand and waves lit at night and beautiful views of Laguna shore during the days. Have eaten here numerous times before.
Although the food is extremely well done, and the presentation is normally excellent the frustration I felt was it was very over priced for what we were experiencing as a group of 7. We booked well in advance, requested special seating and birthday.
The negative was that we were seated outside in a very cramped and crowded patio deck, under four heat lamps and a giant tree. It was crowded and hard to get into the table. No table cloths for a luxury dinner seating. Awkward for the servers at the very best. Did not offer the same level of service as inside in the main restaurant. If anyone got up half the table had to move.
For the Very Significant price we paid per head ($1000 for 7) it was not reflected in the seating we were given, nor in the manner in which we were able to enjoy the evening.
Just a little disappointing and not what we were expecting based on early bookings and the price we paid per person for dinner.
Super service for Birthday celebration.
We were celebrating our daughter's birthday and this was the first time we had dined at the restaurant, though we have been to Splashes bar many times. Patrick, our server, was genuinely friendly and personable, and provided great service and suggestions-- truly enhanced our dining experience. The three of us split the Caesar salad which was enough for all We then ordered the swordfish special, the short ribs and the goat cheese gnocchi. All were prepared with a twist to varying degrees of satisfaction. I have never had gnocchi prepared this way--the unusual ingredients presented in a bowl combination. My husband's short ribs were tender and tasty but the pairing with couscous just was not his preference. And my daughter also liked her swordfish special but found the ingredients somewhat different than she was anticipating as well. Overall, it was a wonderful experience for us but I think diners should expect to receive nontrafionally prepared meals.
Table that they sat us at was extremely Dark. Had Trouble reading menu and also even seeing the food on the plates served
Food was very Good and Service was good.
Restrooms were wet and sandy from Beach using the restroom.
Hotel is old and one elevator was out of order. Hallway from elevator to Restaurant in need of painting and Fixtures
Very humble experience with my wife. Food was delicious, savory and reasonably priced. The service was exceptional. My wife was very pleased spending her birthday for brunch at Splashes. We will definitely return for the wonderful view of the beach. The sound of the waves crashing was so relaxing I could've took a nap at the table.
