Splash Seafood Bar and Grill Ratings and Reviews
The service was amazing, the oysters were the best that I've had in the Midwest. But the Carpaccio was more cheese and horseradish than filet. My wife ordered the Sea Bass and it tasted like it had been soaked for an extended period of time in butter. My tuna was swimming in soy and wasabi. All of these components in my opinion accompany items to make dishes really fantastic, but they were overdone and took away from the main item. I'll be back, but probably won't make it past the oyster bar for a Happy Hour.
We dined at Splash before the Symphony on New Years Eve. All 4 of us ordered the special meal, expecting it to be delicious - it was the special, after all! Instead, the salad was slopped together for a poor presentation, the fish was over cooked, and the sorbet iced. Big disappointment, as we have enjoyed Splash in the past.
Made reservation to celebrate son's college graduation. When we arrived (on time) we were told that table had been accidentally given to another party. Host staff wanted to put two tables together and seat us in the lobby bar area. We declined this option. We were then given a table in the corner of back dining area. Our table we located right next to staff area where orders were entered onto computer screen. There was also a door that I think was supposed to be locked but was kept open with napkin wrapped around lock. Staff went in and out door... I think it was a shortcut to somewhere. This was distracting and definitely did not add to our dining experience
The food was wonderful!!! Service was average and overall experience did not met our expectations.
Our server was disinterested, disheveled, and acted liked she'd rather be somewhere else. Very poor repport,no help with ordering, specials, drinks etc. Would not consider a return visit. The food was fair, but not worth the money. Definitely a big disappointment after hearing what a great place this was to dine.
This is probably the best seafood you can get in Des Moines. The crab legs are the largest we have ever seen. The price is a little high - but you are paying for fresh seafood you don't get anywhere else. Atmosphere is nice. Service is great. We ate there before a show at the Civic Center as it is right across the street. We had leftovers and was unsure what to do with them. They offered to hold them in the fridge for us while we went to the show and we picked them up after the show. Thank you very much to the staff for that. Friendly, nice, and great seafood.
Hosted out of town guests for dinner and "Waitress" production at Civic Center. Splash was perfect with terrific meal and convenience to theater. The friendliness of hostesses and server also made the visit special. Splash exceeded expectations and we look forward to returning!
As always Splash is quality.
The shrimp cocktail is the BEST around.
The sommelier is new and as outstanding as his predecessor.
The scallops were a bit over cooked. The kale and mushrooms, SUPBERB.
It was a performance night at the Civic Center so the restaurant was quite busy.
As previously stated, quality place.
I love Splash! The salt water aquariums give it SUCH a cool lighting and setting, and the food is great. Been there many times, wait staff is always efficient and knowledgeable. Recently I had king salmon with their mustard (moutarde) sauce that was amazingly tender and juicy. The building is now 125 yrs old so they are currently having some special recipes and offerings. It's also a great place to go before an event at the Civic Center, just walk across the street. Book well in advance tho - tables fill up on those nights.
I took my husband for his birthday, we have been at the restaurant prior and was very please. With the current visit we were just not impressed. The waiter was not attentive, did not check in on us as often as would expect for the price of the meal. Our glasses were empty the majority of our meal and just overall let down by the visit.
We were in town for a concert and looking for a place within walking distance of the Wells Fargo Arena to eat. We looked at the menu online and decided on Splash and it was the best decision we ever made. Everything was perfect. Very friendly staff, the drinks were outstanding and, the food was incredible. It was a lot more expensive than your everyday spots but well worth the money. We will be dining there again on our next trip to Des Moines for sure.
At the table next to us 2 couples were seated and their attire was more casual than dress casual, especially noted was that the two young men did not remove their bill caps. In our day and age, a gentleman removed his cover upon entering the establishment or home of someone other than his own. Your restaurant has great ambiance and is a very nice place to celebrate a special occasion, but the dress code should be enforced.
While I realize that we live in a time when people very seldom dress well it should be up to fine establishments such as yours to set the standard.
We traveled from Kansas City for a concert and came here on a recommendation. So glad we did! We love treating ourselves to a nice seafood restaurant every once in a while and I’m so glad we came here. Jamie was on point with her time and attention she gave to us and we had no issues with our order or atmosphere. Highly recommend coming here and I will myself again if ever visiting again!
Prices had increased dramatically and not a lot of choices. Our waiter was somewhat rude and brought me the wrong dish. We were going to the play at the Civic Center, so knew we didn’t have time to replace it. I was with a friend and the waiter didn’t ask us if we wanted separate checks, he just put it in one.
This is one of our go-to spots in our hometown. Our son was visiting from Chicago, and we all wanted fresh seafood--what better place than Splash? Our personal favorite is the ahi tuna appetizer. It's one of the best tuna preparations we've ever had anywhere. Our son loved the crab cakes, as well. For excellent, food, wine choices, service, and quiet conversation, Splash ticks all the boxes. It's much more than just another seafood restaurant.
First time visit. The lobster tail was overcooked (stringy and chewy), the side dish rice was dried out, and the side dish squash was crunchy. The appetizer crab cake was good but over-priced (1 for $18). The clam chowder was average. Emailed the owner/chef afterwards and never got a response. Not planning on returning.
This was a spectacular experience. My wife and I enjoyed our time, food, and spectacular waitress (Jamie). The Miso Salmon is a must have, along with the great Creme Brûlée. I had the pleasure of experiencing the Chef’s featured dish, which was a great Halibut dish. Everything was plated nicely, and I will be back!
Splash is a great place for celebrations, if money is no object. I wouldn't recommend it if you're short on cash. The atmosphere is conducive to conversation. There is a wide range of seafood dishes, fewer of red meat. This time the server seemed somewhat stressed, but generally it is topnotch. I like the fact that a 20% tip is included, as it helps avoid faulty math skills!
