About Spike Africa's Fresh Fish Grill & Bar

Spike Africa …”President of the Pacific Ocean” was the last of the great schooner boat captains sailing out of the West Coast. He learned to sail by shipping out on the “K.V. Kruse”, a five masted schooner freighting lumber from Seattle to Alaska. Spike is best known for his adventurous voyage with the actor Sterling Hayden and their families ending in Tahiti in 1958, and chronicled in Hayden’s classic sea novel “The Wanderer”. As a “Seabee” Lieutenant in WWII Spike fought in the bloody battle of Peleliu Island as depicted in the HBO mini-series “Pacific”. A part time novice actor, Spike appeared in the film “Cinderella Liberty”. He was a legend in virtually every West Coast Port known as a free spirited “last of the breed” sailor. Thank you for coming in today and please enjoy some great food and drink in Spike’s honor.

We have eaten here many times in the past. Seems like the last couple have times, the food has gone down hill. We came here for New Years Eve. My son ordered a whole lobster, that was like chewing on rubber. My yellowtail was so overcooked and dry. My husband had scallops that were a tad undercooked, and asked for them to be cooked a little longer, they came back like little hockey pucks. The restaurant was very slow for a New Years eve dinner, so there really shouldn't have been any reason for poorly cooked food. We will not be back.

Great choices for happy hour food. Beer selection not so great the night we were there, but sangria was good!

Vanessa, our waitress, was great. We kept her going throughout the evening, and she handled it like a pro. Great job!

The food was GREAT. I had the salmon salad, my husband had fish and chips, said it was one of the best fish&chips he'd ever had. Big portions, too. We also had artichoke dip appetizer. Only two blocks from Spreckles Theater. Perfect for eating downtown before shows.

We enjoyed a wonderful meal! The Daily Fresh Fish Specials gave us plenty of choice. The service was great with a very friendly waitress. Would definitely go back to Spike's the next time we are in San Diego!

Service was great! We had a group of 17 people and the servers were helpful and efficient for our large group. They promptly seated us upon arrival and went to making sure we had drinks and appetizers under the happy hour menu before diving in to take our orders. The food came quick and was delicious! Would highly recommend for small or large groups. Make sure to call in advance and schedule a reservation for your large group. I think this helped them prepare. They were great about confirming our reservation in advance and on the day of the event to ensure they were ready. Would definitely recommend again!

One of our favorites restaurants when visiting SD. We absolutely love this restaurant! The atmosphere is fun and chef Kevin always makes it exceptional! We started off with an amazing scallop appetizer. Not only did it have great flavor but a beautiful presentation! I had the chicken specially and my husband had the pork chop. Both were excellent and left us craving for more. Great restaurant with an exceptional chef. Looking forward to our next visit!

Food was great and came out very quickly. The bar was very slow, we had the food we ordered way before we had our drinks. Fun place though and we will go back.

My only criticism would be timing - while the staff was friendly, it took them a very long time to refill drinks, get/clear food and receive our check. There seemed to be about 3 or 4 hostesses but only 2 waitresses for a Saturday night shift. Other than that, it was a pleasant experience.

Bump, set, Spike Africa's for the win!

I've been here before and had a great experience each time. Service is always attentive and prompt. The offer happy hour 7 days/week from 3:30-6:30pm. Oysters are $1.50/each during happy hour and 1/2 off appetizers (specific ones only).

They have a vanilla lavender lemon drop specialty drink. The lavender lends a floral and slightly sweet contrast to the fresh lemon juice = Delightful

The Pt. Loma roll with Maine lobster. OH-EM-GEE! R U KIDDING ME?! Your taste buds will be ruined for all lobster rolls after you've inhaled this delectable dish!

The butterscotch pudding with sea salted caramel is FREE with Yelp check-in. Perfect ending to a food coma.

I have eaten here twice in the past and was always a big fan. My current visit was a complete let down in terms of the food (quality & prep). My dish was completely over cooked... Scallops were rubbery, Brussels sprouts were beyond charred and fingerling potatoes were dry. My husband and daughter both had the lobster sandwich... The lobster in both dishes were not flavorful and was undercooked. I must say that the service was great but unfortunately that's about it. The prices are way too high based on the quality of the meal. Too many delicious restaurants in San Diego to put up with this type of dining experience... I will not be back.

We had a party of 8 and sat in the back room. Appetizers and fresh fish were excellent. Everyone got something different and the quality and taste were great across the table.

The apps and drinks were really good, but the service was terrible. We got our soup and salad and then got our entres less than 5 mins later. When I told the manager he said oh yeah sorry about that and then walked away. I spent less money at a fancy steak restaurant the next night and it was 10 times better in food and service.

Maybe it's all my fault and I ordered the wrong thing because aside from the scallops which did taste fresh and good, what came with them, fingerling potatoes and fried brussel sprouts, were both too oily and salty for my taste buds. But then it says "Fresh FISH Grill and Bar" so maybe I should not have expected a fresh taste for the side dishes. If you like fried potatoes and fried vegetables, and certainly many people do, you'll probably like it. The scallops were good. I probably should have asked if I could get the scallops with salad or sides that were healthier and fresher tasting instead of what came with them.
The people sitting next to us were SO NOISY (just there for happy hour and drank way too much apparently) but our waiter did not ask them to quiet down because there are other diners around them. Maybe that is not their policy. Perhaps I should have spoken up to them and not expected our waiter to do so, but he was pretty fed up with them also but still said nothing, probably to protect his tip. PEOPLE, please be considerate of the other diners when you are in a restaurant. You and your drinking buddies are not the only ones in the place.

This was our 4th time there and a very disappointing experience. The waitress was slow, slow, slow and not too attentive. We asked repeatedly for the same thing over and over. We ordered an appetizer of Brussel sprouts. She finally asked us how they were and we said they were not thoroughly cooked, tough to chew, instead of asking us or offering to bring a fresh cooked order... We got steak knives. We asked for water 3 times. This had been a favorite place but am truly disappointed. The batter on my fish and chips was still somewhat uncooked... Seems to be a theme going.

I have worked downtown for over a year and never ventured in for lunch. I have been missing out! We had a group of six for a birthday lunch. I had the mahi on a bun, it was delicious. Everyone else's food looked good and not one of them complained (surprising in itself).

I'll be visiting more often for sure.
