We ate their before seeing a Broadway show at the Civic Theater and we had great service, delicious food and plenty of time to get to the show. We really enjoyed the cocktails and happy hour options as well. I had the Stay Classy San Diego cocktail and it was yummy. My friend had the Hemingway Mai Tai and it was tasty too. The caesar salads were excellent and we really also liked the Wild Tahitian Albacore.
Over cooked trout that was way to salty this time. Looks like menu has changed & new cooks ??
Great food and service. Happy Hour menu was excellent.
Birthday party...great food, excellent drinks (The Anchor was my fav. ) and great atmosphere.
The place was almost empty on a Saturday night at 8. Service was friendly but slow. Food was meh. Overcooked fish and chips, undercooked swordfish steak. Not terrible but not very good. I wouldn’t go back.
Dinner before show at Balboa.
Great fish restaurant. Lots of fresh options. Just a little quirky. Waitress was knowledgeable and friendly. Food was very nicely prepared, good portions sizes. Adequate wine list, nice mixed drink selections. Their house made margarita was delightful.
Very good dinner & service & they also have a nice wine list. It is a very noisy (energetic) restaurant.
Disappointed. We had an enjoyable meal at Spike Africa’s two years ago. As is our habit, we ordered drinks and an appetizer to share from the happy hour menu before deciding on a choice of meal. The fish and bacon wraps were dry in the center with a clump of brown, wilted greens in the center that were inedible. The lack of attention to the starter led us to the conclusion we would be as disappointed with a full meal. No excuses for such poorly prepared and served food. There were few customers and now we know why.
Prices were reasonable and the food was just OK. Lots of better restaurants around but they’re more expensive. Spike Africa’s is a decent value.
The food was good but Spike Africa has been better. Their food is always spot on but on a Sunday night, my family and I felt it was lacking. They still beat anyone else.
Great place for Happy Hour or pre-theater dining (several theaters within walking distance).
Homemade Butterscotch Pudding Awesome!!!
Service was disjointed (5:45 reservation) but main server was good. No utensils when food brought out. Special occasion listed on open table was not picked up by restaurant - decided to not make it an issue. Food and presentation was average.
My husband and I had dinner here before going to see a play at the civic theatre. I had the steak salad which was really good. My husband had the fish and chips (which I tasted!). The batter was a little too thick and overcooked for me, but the fish was tender and juicy. We’ve eaten here before and we’ll eat there again.
I'd suggest that your wait staff ALWAYS not "usually" note when the food contains nuts. The side dish of coleslaw had walnuts, which can send one of the diners at my table into anaphylactic shock. You know, when they stop breathing? The walnuts were not mentioned on the menu that we saw so I HIGHLY recommend you make this change to both menu and instruct the wait staff. We were fortunate that the walnut was found before it was consumed otherwise that really WOULD have ruined our night at the theatre. Otherwise the food was great and the wait staff attentive to the fact we had a show to get to.
Food was very good at the table but my ono taco was cold.
We were glad to dine at Spike's while we were celebrating our seasonal achievements. Thank you for accomodating the 12 of us!
We ate here before watching a show in the Civic Theatre. The staff was quick and friendly. There was a good variety of dishes and all of the things we ordered were delicious. I would definitely recommend this to someone who wanted a good quick meal in casual friendly place.
Great choice for pre-theater! Happy hour menu had good selections, and the ceviche was delicious! Generous portions!
Seafood Chile Relleno was okay. Loved the black beans though. The Swordfish Nachos were a hit as always. The Butterscotch pudding was delectable! I would get it again. As always, great service. =)
Great food and atmosphere. Got the swordfish fajitas, portion size was big and left full. Happy hour til 630
What an excellent place to have dinner before the show. The staff was great, I loved the happy hour selections like the oysters, and their fish tacos had great fish fillets in them instead of deep fried "fish sticks". We were a little earlier than the main dinner crowd, so we had a quiet booth and a really super waitress. We will definitely go back.
I liked that there is an option to have fish on the nachos other than the traditional protein option. The spicy seafood chowder was tasty. I was disappointed that they were our of the seafood chile relleno. And the Coronado crab roll was a little lackuster. Great service though.
We were expecting better food based on reviews. Food was good but not exceptional. No complaints on the service.
Excellent food and good service. They didn't respond to my reservation made through Open Table where I mentioned it was a birthday. No one in the restaurant knew nor reacted, so booking through Open Table was a waste of time, I could have called directly and made my own arrangements. However food, service and ambiance was good.
Excellent fish and chips along with a good happy hour selection. Nice spot for pre-show drinks and noshing for downtown theatre events. Don't miss the salted butterscotch pudding - share with a friend and have zero regrets!
While in town for a conference, we had a group dinner at Spike's. The menu is seafood forward, which was a big factor because 2 in the group did not eat meat. Everyone enjoyed their meals, which met our expectations. Our server was friendly, attentive, and offered helpful recommendations. We sat towards the back, so it was not very noisy. We were able to chat over a delicious meal.
Great service, food and location. Our new “go to” place!
We chose this restaurant hastily after arriving jet lagged and hungry from the east coast.
The high overhead lights gave it no ambiance. The large TV didn't help. It wasn't a sports bar nor was it an attractive place to eat.
The chairs and tables were cheap looking, the air had a funny smell so we ate outside.
The service was friendly and the fish I ordered was good but overpriced for the serving size. We ordered spinach and artichoke dip that had breadcrumbs on top which seemed like filler and greasy tortilla chips.
Great place to grab dinner before a show at Civic Theater or Spreckles Theater- both walking distance to restaurant. Perfect selections for happy hour. Enjoyed bacon-wrapped swordfish, roasted brussels, ceviche, bean dip. Butterscotch pudding is not on happy hour menu but worth the full price. It was sort of loud in the dining room so not great for quiet conversation. TVs around the room showing sports if you want to catch some World Series while dining.
Spike's is consistent. Very good food and service. The salmon salad I had was excellent. Convenient for dining before going to the San Diego Repertory Theatre!
Happy hour before theater. Flavorful, large appetizers. Really liked the white Sangria. Friends said the caesar salad, clam chowder, and garlic bread were excellent. The ceviche was too salty and odd with guac on the top. They nicely too it off the bill. Would recommend to anyone.
We were running late( group of 5) and were concern about getting food in timely matter as we had Theater tickets. As soon as we told the staff they gave EXTRA SPEEDY SERVICE! The food wade cellent( grilled sea bass) with non traditional very tasty coleslaw. Ordered Brussels sprouts from the happy hour menu- delicious and served really hot temp( made to order, not sitting at the counter getting cold😊) GREAT SERVICE❗️
We arrived about 12 minutes early and were asked to come back so that we would have a better experience. We did,but there was nothing special that happened. Just odd!
Food was fine.
Nice happy hour selection. Most food items very tasty, the calamari friti was not warm when it reached our table
Awesome experience. Amazing service. Incredible food. We will be back!
We arrived hungry and unable to make up our minds as to what we wanted to eat. Luckily for us, it was happy hour! We threw caution (and calories) to the wind and tried just about everything on the happy hour menu with a few extras. Nothing disappointed, memorable bites included the shredded pork street tacos, the bean dip, the oysters, and the incredibly decadent butterscotch pudding. A great pre-theatre dinner win!
We had theater tickets and wanted to eat somewhere close by. Spikes fit the bill. The food was excellent. We had swordfish bites (swordfish wrapped in bacon served with arugula, tomatos, and a mustard sauce), Pt. Loma shrimp roll, and fish and chips. We were also there during happy hour-where they had half price appetizers and really good drink deals.
We will be back.
Our server, Dawnie, was wonderful. She was extremely knowledgeable about a gluten free diet and the ingredients in Spike's food items.
