Went for a birthday and even specified this on request but unfortunately they didn’t do anything special with dessert or anything for the birthday. Not that it is expected, but almost every restaurant does this! Our food was good and came fast but our server came to our table only a few times and then didn’t return for an hour. Overall good experience but service needs some work.
I was disappointed in the food at Spice Route as I have heard great things about it and most restaurants on King West are top notch. The food was just mediocre and not worth the price. The staff was great and the atmosphere was cool but the food isn't worth returning.
We order our plate and 5 minutes later it was in front of us. The starters arrived after...
Didn't have the time to enjoy the evening, we were rushed to order.
The food was very fat (avoid the orange beef) and no rice served with the food..
Overall, we were a group of friend and were very disappointed
This was an embarrassment. Hostess was on her cell phone, too busy to lookup when we walked in. Glasses on both drinks I ordered were dirty. Menu was nothing more than reheated freezer food. Tables look like the originals from years ago when the Place First opened. The upholstery was tattered and worn on the banquettes. Washrooms - some worked, some didn’t. The door looks functioned really well when the spot opened 10 years ago, they probably can’t find the parts to fix them anymore. Music? That was a great Spotify playlist...or maybe it was Napster! 🤣
Avoid this place and don’t waste your time.
we were there for a birthday dinner. Our reservation was at 9:30 which is a bit late for dinner but the restaurant started making the switch into a "night club/lounge" which made it very difficult for us to hold a conversation due to the loud music.
The food was great. Portions are super large and nowhere on the menu does it indicate that it is "family style" so just beware, every dish is probably enough for 2 people.
We were looking for a place to accommodate 10 people on a Friday, on short notice. This was the only place that could do so.
The space is huge, but was quite empty on a Friday in busy King West. The food was ok, but not great. It came out all at once and almost too quickly (is it all pre-made before we arrived?). The decor was fine but a bit dated and you can tell that nobody was paying attention to items that needed replacing (eg chipped plates, etc).
The space doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it an upscale restaurant? Then why is there a bar in the centre with huge tvs broadcasting sporting events? So, is it a sports bar? Then why is there a DJ booth and loud music? Is it a club then? Confusing.
I came here years before and remember it being much better. It was lively, the food was flavourful. Service was nice enough this time around, but my overall impression was that this is now a budget option or a place that has veered off of its original path (to its detriment), either due to cost-cutting or the challenges that exist given all the competitors in the area .
This wasn't my first visit to Spice Route. In my line of work I've entertained clients here mostly for drinks several times in the last 5 years.
I have to say the ambiance is fantastic but the food was very blah. I mean the restaurant has "spice" in its name yet the food lacks spice. Come on people! Add some flavour.
Anyway, I wouldn't recommend having dinner here. You can't eat ambiance. But should grab a drink or 4 here. The music is good. Just way too loud during dinner. Unless they are trying to be rush patrons through eating.
Service staff were OK. Not exceptional. Ah well. Lesson learned.
It was a good experience going to Spice Bar, the ambiance was great, the food was on point and the service was good. My only dislike was that considering I went for my birthday and I had a large group we could not get separate bills and when the bill came, it created confusion as well as it took away from our time as we had to try to figure out what each individual meals cost. That was an inconvenience. Overall we had a good time though, music and food was lit.
Had an awesome time here with a large group for bday dinner and dancing afterwards. Music was good, crowd was cool and the food tasted amazing (prices were a lot lower than i expected too). Service could have been a bit faster but had overall a great experience! Would 100% recommend to large parties.
This was my first visit to Spice Route and it was underwhelming. The service was very slow despite the restaurant being nearly empty (3-4 tables occupied) and one large party in a private room. It took over 40 mins to receive my main dish after being served our appetizers. And despite the long wait and making specifications to my meal, the order came incorrectly. I did not end up having my meal and I feel that my money and time could have been better spent at a neighbouring restaurant. Thankfully, the decor and design of the restaurant helped to brighten my mood.
The ambiance was okay and honestly it was the driving factor for us but the food was so not enough! None of us left satisfied both portion wise and taste wise. The portions were very small and insufficient. Even though it was Summerlicious and we had 3 courses we weren't feeling full afterwards. Also the service was okay but everything felt very rushed. We didn't have time to enjoy the ambiance as much as we wanted to- one of us even called the experience ''a fast food dinner'' which I regretfully agree...
Unfortunately the food was not good. We didn't eat most of it. The calamari was heavily laden in the breaded coating and the fish inside had a rubber consistency. It didn't taste good. All of the sauces that accompanied the food were very thick and gelatinous and didn't taste good; almost as if they were old / stale.
The cocktails were very watered down and arrived in small glasses full of ice cubes.
All in all we were very disappointed and wouldn't recommend this place for food. Our server were very kind and professional and was very good at her job.
Nice place. First time going here. The vibe was very cool. Food was delicious. Place was a little outdated in that the plates were chiped and the couches were ripped/had holes. On Friday and Saturday nights the restaurant turns into a club, which we weren't aware of. The DJ was awesome. When we left there was an actual line up to get inside. Would defintely come back for the club scene..it was quite entertaining.
It was fine overall.
We dined outside; table was not cleaned from tree droppings before we were seated.
Two meat dishes seemed overcooked; deep-fried and too hard.
Everything else was good; portions could be more generous.
Our server (don't remember her name) was great; friendly and very helpful.
I really truly love the food and the ambiance at Spice Route. I have been going to Spice Route with friends and colleagues for years, whether for a get-together with friends or for celebrating special occasions. We always enjoy the sharing plates and the wide selection, such as the yummy potstickers, duck wraps, cantonese chow mein, bok choy, lemon chicken and of course the sweet potato fries. The food is always prepared quickly and comes to our table steaming hot. I think that everything is reasonably priced and certainly great value for the money. I have always enjoyed friendly attentive service from the servers.
I am definitely looking forward to going back to Spice Route soon. It really is one of my favourite restaurants.
Appetizers / sharIng plates need improving . Mostly fried and rubbery . Lettuce cups with chicken were delicious . Crab cakes were rubbery and tasted awful . Spicy calamari poor quality too . Honestly a lot of options looked like they came from freezer bag and tossed into deep frier. Restaurant like this needs to step up food . Waiter very pleasant . Ambience beautiful .
Establishment commands a great location, design and decor -- however it falls short in the kitchen. Most of the dishes seem to be pre-made and on "standby" for dinner service where they are simply warmed up on-demand and rushed out to be served very quickly.
This results in great service speed (things move out of the kitchen really fast!) however the quality is tremendously impacted, in fact its dismal and certainly doesn't live up to the impression of the place.
I don't mind waiting a little longer for something better.
Food was very good, portions could have been a little bigger though. Service was horrendous, the waiter David should consider changing careers. He was horrible, did not come to the table often at all, especially in the beginning left us waiting for a long time. Was also very rude.
Payment system is either really odd, or David did not want to do the work. You only get ONE bill, and then the customer has to go through the items, do the math, and figure out how much each person should pay, rather than get separate bills like every restaurant in North America.
