We stopped here for dinner before going to a concert. The food always comes out quick and has some awesome flavor. Service is excellent and the prices are fair. The Oriental/Asian atmosphere is very nice and unique. We will definitely be back next time we are in town.
The restaurant is large and open and there were hardly any customers when we were there for dinner, so there was no ambience. We found the main courses reasonably priced and good. The sharing plates not so good. We enjoyed the lettuce wraps and that plate was well priced, but the calamari were tough on the calamari/shrimp dish, and the crab cakes were only 3 tiny pieces so those 2 dishes were well over priced and not very enjoyable. The staff were friendly and the service good. I would return to try the patio, the main courses were a better deal than the appetizers/sharing plates.
Only one of their two heaters was working on the cold Toronto evening I dined here, and suffice to say it was uncomfortably cold inside and we needed to dine wearing our thick winter jackets, as did most other diners. Didn't help warm up hands and feet though. Other than that, ambience was fine with a nice entrance in particular, but the cold inside temp spoiled the occasion. Food was ok, nothing special, expected more from an establishment of this nature (by comparison, Bangkok Garden was a much tastier meal along these same lines).
The food wasn't special but it did taste good. I enjoyed the coconut shrimp tempura and the lemon chicken. The banana aplit tempura dessert was also different from other banana tempuras since the breading is different and has something like mochi but I do wish they made the ice cream scoops bigger. They were tiny. Proportiona doesn't make sense for banana split.
Resto is nice but furnace was down yesterday sp it was super cold. The least they could do was give out free hot tea or coffee but nope. They didn't take the extra mile. They could do better.
I was in Toronto visiting a friend. She mentioned how they were having Winterlicious, and I figured that was a great way to get to know some restaurants in the area. After searching through way too may restaurants, we finally settled on this spot. The drinks were delicious, as was the food. The wait staff were friendly. The place has a huge bar in the middle, so after eating, we had the option to hang around near the bar area. Overall, this was a great dining experience.
Love the ambiance of this place for a late night.
Its a great late dining/lounge.
Nice decor and plenty of space.
Not a place for a quiet date night but would be much better with a group of friends.
Would defintely go back!
I will definitively go back there!
Quite disappointed with the overall service at Spice Route. The drinks were watered down, the food was late--one of our appetizers was sent to a different table, so the rest of our food was cold while we waited for it to come. The food overall was not flavourful and not filling. It was like frozen food that was microwaved! The room was cold too! I will not be going back! 😕
They didn't really have it together.
But comped most of our meal since they recognized we didn't have a great experience, so it was probably an outlier situation.
We had a great time. Thank you!
Amazing place and night club transformation is amazing to enjoy the night right after your dinner.
Bring your parka! We went for NYE and it was absolutely freezing in the restaurant, almost every person there wore their coats for their entire meal.
Apparently, the venue isn't insulated. It's way too cold to eat dinner here, I'm sure if you're going for drinks and to dance it would be fine?
Shared dishes were all tasty but came out hot but as soon as you scooped it onto your plate it was luke warm and in no time, cold.
Extremely disappointing, because the staff is awesome and so is the space. I feel bad doing this review because the manager did comp our bill (for the food) but it seemed as though he had this same conversation daily.
Its really time to invest in some space heaters.
I ate here last May and it was overall great, so I guess if the weather outside is warm it’s a good choice!
Amazing ambience, great staff, fantastic food. The hot stone steak was a hit! The club atmosphere later was a pleasant surprise. Next time I come to Toronto will definitely visit again!
Spice Route used to be a preferred restaurant when we lived in Toronto. It's now much more a bar than restaurant. The menu has been greatly reduced and the service is very slow and you certainly don't feel special dining there.
What little is left of the menu is fairly good but no longer does it have the fun feel you always had when entering the Spice Route. Guess all good things come to an end. So sad!
I found that the food was not as good as I have had it before. The cost for the portion size was somewhat high. I was expecting more for a restaurant with a good reputation.
Celebrated my birthday here on a Saturday night. Our whole table was very happy with the food and service, our waiter was very kind and accommodating. Would definitely come back!
Went for a birthday and even specified this on request but unfortunately they didn’t do anything special with dessert or anything for the birthday. Not that it is expected, but almost every restaurant does this! Our food was good and came fast but our server came to our table only a few times and then didn’t return for an hour. Overall good experience but service needs some work.
I was disappointed in the food at Spice Route as I have heard great things about it and most restaurants on King West are top notch. The food was just mediocre and not worth the price. The staff was great and the atmosphere was cool but the food isn't worth returning.
We order our plate and 5 minutes later it was in front of us. The starters arrived after...
Didn't have the time to enjoy the evening, we were rushed to order.
The food was very fat (avoid the orange beef) and no rice served with the food..
Overall, we were a group of friend and were very disappointed
This was an embarrassment. Hostess was on her cell phone, too busy to lookup when we walked in. Glasses on both drinks I ordered were dirty. Menu was nothing more than reheated freezer food. Tables look like the originals from years ago when the Place First opened. The upholstery was tattered and worn on the banquettes. Washrooms - some worked, some didn’t. The door looks functioned really well when the spot opened 10 years ago, they probably can’t find the parts to fix them anymore. Music? That was a great Spotify playlist...or maybe it was Napster! 🤣
Avoid this place and don’t waste your time.
Server was not attentive and rude and off putting.
Gracie was her name.
we were there for a birthday dinner. Our reservation was at 9:30 which is a bit late for dinner but the restaurant started making the switch into a "night club/lounge" which made it very difficult for us to hold a conversation due to the loud music.
The food was great. Portions are super large and nowhere on the menu does it indicate that it is "family style" so just beware, every dish is probably enough for 2 people.
It was okay... Menu has been the same for a long time!!! Found a hair in my salad.
We were looking for a place to accommodate 10 people on a Friday, on short notice. This was the only place that could do so.
The space is huge, but was quite empty on a Friday in busy King West. The food was ok, but not great. It came out all at once and almost too quickly (is it all pre-made before we arrived?). The decor was fine but a bit dated and you can tell that nobody was paying attention to items that needed replacing (eg chipped plates, etc).
The space doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it an upscale restaurant? Then why is there a bar in the centre with huge tvs broadcasting sporting events? So, is it a sports bar? Then why is there a DJ booth and loud music? Is it a club then? Confusing.
I came here years before and remember it being much better. It was lively, the food was flavourful. Service was nice enough this time around, but my overall impression was that this is now a budget option or a place that has veered off of its original path (to its detriment), either due to cost-cutting or the challenges that exist given all the competitors in the area .
Great! But loud
This wasn't my first visit to Spice Route. In my line of work I've entertained clients here mostly for drinks several times in the last 5 years.
I have to say the ambiance is fantastic but the food was very blah. I mean the restaurant has "spice" in its name yet the food lacks spice. Come on people! Add some flavour.
Anyway, I wouldn't recommend having dinner here. You can't eat ambiance. But should grab a drink or 4 here. The music is good. Just way too loud during dinner. Unless they are trying to be rush patrons through eating.
Service staff were OK. Not exceptional. Ah well. Lesson learned.
Great food, friendly waiters. The hostess was not so welcoming, and was very rude when we asked her to take our photo (eye rolls and all).
Great food, good service... but too bad it was not mentioned that our table would become table service after 11 ... we had to rush our dinner 🤔
Calamari And Shrimp Was Terrible. We had to send it back because we couldn't even chew through it. There were only 4 tables occupied by people and by the end of my dinner at 1030 pm the entire venue was empty. I won't be going back
Was disappointed that the menu has been shortened so much!
