Spice Merchant Cookham
Ancient 15th century coach house, which offers a historic setting that has been tastefully modernised to ensure a fantastic dining experience. With its wonderful low ceilings, three separate rooms and restaurant upstairs or private dining, which are the original design of the building, has a unique intimate and cosy atmosphere.
The menu here is very traditional, with pot cooking and flame grilling as the main cooking methods. This restaurant is for those who are looking for something new!
Punjabi Chicken Lollipops
with chilli, lime and cinnamon
Stuffed with spiced minced lamb
Very happy with the experience and my children loved it
So good to be able to go again , food fantastic as usual
Our favourite Indian xx
Service was excellent and food was outstanding. Lovely ambience.
Bit quiet - late Sunday lunch - which was fine for us
The restaurant knew we were there for a special occasion to celebrate our sons graduation, they offered us a free round of celebratory drinks and were very nice in congratulating him. All round a lovely evening of lovely food and great service. Thank you.
Wonderful food - great service and felt very welcome. Left alone just enough and waited on just enough to be comfortable!
Took friends there because we knew the food was fantastic. Our friends said it’s the best Indian food they’ve ever tasted. My friends are both 60+. The food really is outstanding you'd be very hard pressed not to be completely overwhelmed. If you could award six stars then that would be the case
Lovely food, ambience not as good as other Spice Merchant group restaurants though. Service good although disappointed that my choice from the menu was unavailable and the coffee machine was broken.
Exceptional in Indian, great atmosphere, lovely service
Amazing food and service in a stunning location. We will be back!!!!
Excellent service and food as always. Our favourite place to eat in Cookham
If you're looking for superior Indian food made with good ingredients and offering fresh flavours, this is the place!
Great food & great service. Would definitely recommend
Top marks 10/10
A bit pricey but we’ll worth it !!
The food was amazing!! Best Indian cuisine for miles. The team are so friendly and attentive. Lovely to finally sit inside. Lovely relaxing music. We'll be back very soon!!!
Delicious food and great service
Great food, staff
Food excellent. Service friendly.
Wonderful meal! Great cosy restaurant with wonderful atmosphere. Lucky I managed to get a booking before lockdown #3
Excellent food and drink with great Covid free procedures and particularly service.
Great quality & service. Very good evening with attention to detail second to none!
We have eaten at Spice Merchant Cookham several times before, but this time was truly amazing, the best meal we have had there, lots of new menu dishes and the presentation of everything was fabulous. The flavours were spot on, deep and rich. I urge you to try something new, they have clearly put a lot of thought and energy in to creating the new dishes and they are very very good! Also very Covid aware and secure.
Very efficient service combined with fantastic food . Good customer experience
I had heard about this restaurant via a close friend and as usual went to Google maps to read the reviews...
It was our 10th wedding anniversary and I had mentioned this on the booking; we were meted and greeted (firstly with a temperature check!) with congratulations...
The restaurant had a very old but modern feel (think wood like a pub not red fabric like an old Indian restaurant).
We had a table near the bar area but it felt very cosy.
I like curry, actually I love curry and before Covid 19 I got to travel quite a bit up and down the country always having a curry, so I am more than qualifying judge...
This curry was amazing, my wife is Vegan (but doesn’t make a big deal of it) and I got to sample her meal - you wouldn’t miss the meat.
Portions were perfect, the naan bread was cut into quarters, the bottle of wine was kept on ice and discreetly served by a waiter in gloves.
We shared vegetarian starters and I had a chicken dish - spicy but not gloopy.
We noticed the couple next to us got a doggy bag and for the first time ever I asked for one (Sunday morning warmed up curry and naan is an experience!)
At the end of the meal we were offered a complimentary drink which was a really nice touch and I had my first ever ‘Indian Irish Coffee’ lol.
It was pouring with rain as we left and the staff made sure we had a taxi booked.
I would love to come here again, I might even try the Indian afternoon tea.
Thank you for making our anniversary so special.
Really delicious food and friendly staff I would highly recommend the Spice Merchant
Greeted on arrival with a quick temperature check and then shown to our table. The service is excellent, efficient but not obtrusive or rushed. The food was very tasty and plentiful. We thought the meal was very good value for money. The restaurant must be doing something right because it was very busy and I recommend booking in advance.
Second visit to Spice Merchant Cookham was lovely, staff are wonderful and the food is delicious. First time the chicken lollipops were outstanding, this time they were still great. Will definitely return
Service always good here. Food very nice and hot . Recommend keema naans as cut for you which is much easier, and very tasty. We would be back .
Absolutely wonderful restaurant.
From start to finish the service was friendly relaxed and attentive.
The menu is very modern with superb flavours and has the traditional curry favourites included.
Splendid drinks selection including great beers & wine
Excellent chef and manager.
Food not as good as previous visits. Value was Surprising as they have increased their Prices in spite of the low VAT that they are enjoying. We are happy to support local business but it must work both ways. We will not book the Spice Merchant again until we feel that we can enjoy value for money. Everyone is struggling but restaurants need our support so this restaurant must remember that too. Ripping customers off in not a good plan for any hospitality outlets.
Always had nice food here - super tasty and enjoyable :-)
We had a wonderful meal on Monday night for my husband's birthday! The seafood platter was amazing and we got given scallops as an extra just because we wanted to try them. My vegetable byriani came enclosed like a pie but in what looked like an indian bread which was fantastic and something I had never seen before. Very enjoyable experience and we even had cognac on the house!
Always a friendly welcome and the food is excellent!
The restaurant was fairly empty ,but that must be because of the current situation in general. The service was courteous and the food was nicely prepared and tasty.
Amazing food throughout and a really interesting menu too.
Unbelievable food, friendly staff. Best Indian I have ever been to.
I booked this restaurant as we had previously had delicious food here on a visit last year & I was looking for something to suit everybody's tastes within our party of 10...curry was decided as the best option!
The restaurant normally closes at the time that I had wanted to book our meal - but they very kindly remained open in order to accommodate our timings. The waiter was very patient with our party waiting for latecomers to arrive & waiting for our order & he didn't make us feel rushed at all given that we were the only people he had to serve!
We all chose different dishes & I had slight reservation that our food would suffer due to less staff in the kitchen perhaps?- however, it all arrived with no problems at all & was of a very high standard, delicious!
We would definitely eat here again, the only downside to our 'private dining' experience at the restaurant was that we missed out on the lovely hubbub ambience that we experienced when dining in the restaurant when it was busy with other people, but that was down to ourselves so we shall have to return another time when we can book within normal opening hours!
Visited with two others on a Wednesday evening. The reservation was made quickly and easily a few days earlier via the Spice Merchant/Open Table websites.
We were offered a table by one of the front windows, which we happily accepted. From this location, I noted a number of people calling for pre-ordered take-away meals, which was a good sign that the food is popular with local residents.
Service was exceptional, from the moment we arrived to the time we eventually left. Our waiter was extremely polite and attentive, yet not obtrusive. We met the Manager, who was really friendly, very helpful when it came to choosing our food and came over at the end of our meal to offer a very kind and generous "thank you".
The wine list was extensive; we ordered one bottle of red and one white. My companions were very pleased by their selections, which complemented the food perfectly. I had a bottle of Cobra beer - I initially ordered the non-alcoholic variety, but that was out-of-stock, so I had a "normal" Cobra and limited my intake of wine (I was driving).
We were there for the food (the menus we had perused on-line were extensive) and this did not disappoint! Portions were good and the flavour, texture and presentation was outstanding! This restaurant must have the best Indian chefs in Berkshire.
The bill was reasonable, considering what we ordered and the fact this business serves an affluent area. One of my friends was so pleased by the food and service that so booked her birthday meal there for the following month! The Manager was most accommodating regarding her wishes and we are looking forward to returning just after Christmas for another excellent evening.
Well done to all the staff at Spice Merchant, Cookham - you deserve awards for producing "Michelin Award" worthy food and looking after your guests so well.
lovely place, great atmosphere, welcoming service and excellent food especially Monkfish and vegetable curry
Went with friends having always gone to Maliks opposite but fancied a change.
Was slightly surprised that it was only half full especially for a Friday evening however was shown to a nice table that was divided up into small rooms.
Everything was really nice and tasty however thought the starter platters were really overpriced at £14.00 person especially for the quantity of food that was on each plate.
The mains were really nice and different to elsewhere and have also for the first time ordered a desert that was really nice and also got a complimentary desert as it was our anniversary and was also offered complimentary after dinner drinks.
However thought the bill was still expensive compared to Maliks opposite coming in at £256.00 for 4 persons.
Would come again but won't have the starter platters next time
