Spice 28 Ratings and Reviews
Service was exceedingly slow - 20 minutes before anyone took an initial drink order. One of our party, who has a very high tolerance for spicy food, received a sechuan style dish that was about 50% dried pepper pods and so hot it was largely inedible. Meanwhile my panang curry was disappointingly mild and flavorless. Between the food and poor service, none of our threesome will be back.
I ordered the duck salad, ahi tuna dumplings, shrimp and sea bass, and key lime pie. The dumplings were by far my favorite. The salad dressing was very sweet. Almost like pure honey if it was not simply pure honey. My friend asked for the blue crab and avocado salad. The raspberry dressing on her salad was very sweet as well. The shrimp and sea bass was very well seasoned. The sea bass was slightly overcooked, yet it was still delicious. It was spicy which wasn't indicated on the menu but it was also overly sweet as well. However, I did enjoy it. The cheesecake was not very sweet at all, but the key lime topping was good. I recommended this spot to a co-worker. I will more than likely go back there myself to test out some more items on the menu. The business appeared to be family-run and all of the waiting staff were friendly and attentive.
I loved the food and the price! We went during restaurant week but ordered off the main menu. The bar is cramped but and the seating tight but not stuffy.
There was a party of 10 in the back and because of the shape and material it made conversation difficult.
Would definitely go again!
I have eaten here 3 times. I come to Philly once a year for business and I have eaten lunch here twice and dinne once. Both times I had lunch, food was great and so was service. On my latest visit, food was good, but service was poor. Once we were seated, no one came over to get us started, to ask for our drink order or anything. We sat for about a good 10-15 minutes before I stopped a waitress and asked her if we could be helped. We were able to get only one drink at the happy hour price, as a result. The food came relatively quickly once we ordered but one of my colleagues never got her order b/c the order was never entered...not sure why. Her food came very late when out of us were done. I was disappointed that a drink or some aspect of the meal wasn't comped. We had to wait a while for our checks, too. Again, food is very good but service on this particular night was poor. Perhaps they were short-staffed.
We ate at this restaurant two nights in a row. The first night was exceptional, although the food delivery was a little slow on occasion. The food was very good.
The second night was a service meltdown. The servers work from the front of the house near the bar. The kitchen is in back and there's no coordination between the two. Both courses came late and almost cold. In addition, my salmon was overcooked and dry. Drink orders took forever although the restaurant wasnt very busy. We watched another table have similar issues. No single waitress owned our table, which added to the confusion.
Too bad as we chose to eat here the second night based on the great experience the day before with Cassidy. We may be back but it will take a while to get over the second night.
There is a lot of potential for this restaurant, but they are slacking on the upkeep. We sat in cushion seats that were ripped up and very clearly worn out. The menus appeared to be really dirty and there were markings from people coloring on them. The staff was nice and the food was good, but it's not a restaurant I would need to visit again.
Sunday evening was a perfect quiet time to try this restaurant. Attentive service with solid recommendations. Both Sichuan dishes were spicy, fresh, and flavorful. Waitress was helpful working with food allergies, and having a timely to-go order for us to take home.
A great experience from start to finish. The staff was very friendly, the orders were very accurate (for a group of 10), everything was explained, the food was spectacular! Everything was flavorful, beautiful presentation and the wait was appropriate. The food didn't rush out of the kitchen, nor did it take a long time to make its way to the table. I would gladly eat here again and again
We were a group of 12 ages ranging from 2-83. Everyone had a good meal. I liked the ginger martini and tuna. Others likes the mojitos and various other entrees. Great service. Would definitely definitely go back. To calm this place a Chinese restaurant does not give it the credit it deserves for an innovative exciting menu. Give this place a try
Food was good as usual but we had to send 2 entrees back to be cooked more. We ask for Saigon beef well done. Was not. It was delicious when it came back out. One person ordered soup and asked that it come with the appetizers. It came out after his meal. We had it wrapped and took it home. And the bar service was SO slow. Puzzling why it took so long to get drinks because there were only 2 people sitting at the bar. We got our appetizers before we got our first drink. It had to be more than 20 minutes. Very disappointing. We go here periodically because we love the food. Was not a our best visit all round but the food was very good and we will be back.
Great service. We were seated right away and given ample time to look at menu. Coconut milk veg soup was tasty, slightly spicy, but flavorful. Cold cucumber appetizer was also very good.
I ordered grilled salmon, it was a little dry, not bad enough to send back, but just OK. My dining companion had one of the sea bass entrees and it was beyond excellent. I would probably try one the curry dishes the next time.
I eat at Spice 28 whenever I am in Center City. Love the Asian inspired meals and interesting cocktails and mocktails. The food is always quick and concise, the service is on point and everyone is friendly. I especially like to eat when I have events at the convention center for its proximity and lack of crowds that exists in Chinatown.
