Spencer's Ratings and Reviews
Quality and quantity of food for the price was poor and we had a groupon! Based on this visit we would not return. Very disappointing experience, filets and rib eyes were USDA Choice at best. Costco prime much better quality. Maybe it was just a bad night or just our table.
Had been there a few years ago and remembered it to be "ok". I must say this time I was very impressed. The service was excellent, the wine list fairly priced and with a few very good QPR wines.
The octopus appetizer was fantastic! Not tough or chewy, but rather, tender and with a hint of smokiness from the grill. Really, very well prepared. The pork chop is noteworthy as well. I asked for medium rare, and that's exactly how it was prepared. Simply delicious.
I won't hesitate to dine there again!
Spencer's always puts out awesome food. Salmon was perfectly cooked, skin crisp - awesome. This was a business lunch, and we sat between other 2-tops that were quickly filled even though the room itself wasn't full. Wish they would prioritize a little more space between filled tables - when they have room.
The decor was very suiting with the theme of the restaurant. I enjoy how Spencer's was not overly formal and that we were able to eat very comfortably. The food met the standards; however, I was a bit dissatisfied with the tomahawk steak as the char on the outside was too burnt that it almost overpowered the natural flavors of the meat. Of course the price was higher than I liked and in terms of value it was okay; I would only go here with others for the experience and not necessarily for the food, especially with their price tag.
There were eight of us out for a Mother's Day dinner .
To start with the valet parking was lacking in that there didn't seem to be an interest to rush to help. Upon departing it seemed as if I was interrupting a conversation to get my car. In the past the service had been quite different, there was "a rush to serve" and help.
The different courses of the meal were served very late, and at times it was embarrassingly late.
Then one of my Guest could not get the Spencer Steak which he ordered, which seems strange because it was "Spencer's ", you would think they would have the very Steak that was their namesake.
My ribeye steak was very thin and I noticed the inconsistency in the steaks for the various Guests, even though they ordered the same steak .
Two of the Guests ordered the special dinner that included a desert and the waiters forgot to serve their desert. Which by itself wouldn't have been so bad, but in combination with the other issues it added to the problems of the night.
In conclusion for an over $700 dinner experience it was disappointing .
Food taste good but it's time consuming to dine there. It's about 4 or 5 tables when we're there Sat night and it took almost 3 hours to complete the meal and check out. Found a plastic bag piece in the starter plate and took almost half an hour to get the final bill include correction on the bill. They need improvement on management include the servers.
I had the signature cocktail- red pear spencertini- delicious. The BREAD- that was brought to the table was FANTASTIC- best bread ever. My octopus was good, and veggie salad was good too. My husband's NY steak was excellent. Nice decor, and good service. They validate parking, which we wish we had known beforehand.
Have been here during conventions at the hotel, so know the place. Decided to do an early Mother's day lunch here, ordered flowers, were on the table as requested. Great service, the steaks were cooked as requested and excellent. Decent sized portions, everything on the plate was excellent. (And the chocolate tart was... Yummmm.) Had just had a horrible experience at another restaurant. Spencer's was the right choice. Very pleased, a great experience. It's at the top of my go-to places right now. Don't do much fine dining but this is the way to go for me. Thanks! Stu
Finally tried Spencer's at the San Jose Doubletree Hilton. Overall it was a good experience. We tried their calamari appetizer based on previous recommendations. It was crispy, accompanied by pickled onions, marinated olives, radishes, and sprouts. The portion was generous. I had their Spencer cut. Good size on the steak and a perfect medium rare. The meat wasn't salted beforehand. The flavor was lacking a bit. My wife ordered the risotto which was creamy, but a bit on the salty side. We finished with the creme brûlée that was unremarkable. The service was fine, but we had a hard time understanding the server. He seemed like he was in a hurry initially, although the room was not busy. The chef came out on the floor and made rounds to the tables. All around good, but not spectacular.
Perhaps the worst service I have ever experienced. Among the failures:
- lunch menu given at dinner; crude replacement
- duped into ordering bottled water; tap water not offered
- appetizers & soup served without drinks or entrée orders taken, leaving us to juggle menus and wine list on our laps for 10-15 minutes
- soup served without spoon; took over 10 minutes to get anyone’s attention to ask for a soup spoon
- even after asking, another 10-plus minutes to get a spoon, and then it was a teaspoon left on the bread plate; 20-plus minutes to get a spoon?
- nearly impossible to get anyone’s attention: any server, bartender, or hostess, despite looking, waving, speaking, and eventually walking around the restaurant
- finally managed to speak to the manager, who said he would “take care of it” but never came to the table
- white wine (in a half-bottle, no less) not accompanied by a cooler until asked
- had to chase down someone to ask for our check, even after declining dessert and coffee because host had to catch a train
- sole attempt at remediation was server saying “sorry for the little glitch back there” when delivering the bill; not any admission of horrible service, sympathy to our dining experience, or even one penny discount anywhere on the bill, even as a courtesy
- manager never once visited the table to offer an apology or even ask how we were doing
Bottom line: no one on the staff is trained to offer good service. Note that entrées cost $30-70, without sides. First-class prices, third-class restaurant.
We are locals and have dinner at Spencers at least once or twice a month. Service is always amazing, as the staff is always attentive and on top of things. Food is amazing and is consistent in taste, quality and flavor. Lovely atmosphere as well. We highly recommend this to anyone!
Spencer's is a go to restaurant for my business lunches and dinners. While the menu has a good variety , it isn't so large that you can't make a choice. Also, everything on the menu is prepared to perfection. I love the Steak and little gem salad, which I had yesterday. My associate had another favorite, the prime rib melt. We skipped the calamari this time, but the unique version at Spencer's must be tried, its a winner. Never have had an issue with anything at Spencer's.
We come here often and the bar service never fails, needs to be highly improved. Your staff should never forget that the locals are just as important as the celebrities that dine at your establishment. Waiting 45 mins to get a cocktail when the dining room only has three tables occupied, and staff walking around, is just ridiculous! Step in managers! Observe what is going on around the celebrity that has taken over the staff! Have outstanding customer service for us to write good about! The steaks is what keeps bringing us back, but we may have to change that and pass the word on. This was a very embarrassing and disappointing experience for the friends that we brought with us.
Dinner was loud and accompanied by screaming infants. The parents did little to quell the noise. The steaks were outstanding and the sides were good. The wait staff didn't listen (or couldn't hear the orders.) Many items were overlooked. Water with no ice was never observed. Courses were out of order. This was the first less than ideal meal I've had there.
The medium rare Bone-in ribeye was very dry. No marbling and definitely not worth the $67 price tag. See bass was also dry and overcooked. Ahi poke was way too salty and we like savory things. The sides (asparagus, hash brown, and especially the mushrooms) were really good. I would go just for the sides, but nothing else.
Overcooked steaks; these were replaced quickly
Overcooked sea bass; this was ignored
Sultry reaction to pointing this out.
Management was awol: had left for the evening before guests; inexperienced staff had to fend for itself
Small coupon was offered w 2 week validity
Just did not leave a pleasant taste for an expensive meal
