Spencer's Ratings and Reviews
I felt almost embarrassed to want to send the steak back, but it was nothing fantastic. In fact, my two daughters didn't want to eat the meat and said the steak I cooked at home was more delicious (better seasoned). My daughter is not a foodie, but she told me the salmon she ordered was too dry. At first I didn't want to believe that the salmon came out too done and dry, but as soon after she offered me the taste I almost regretted it. Too late, drink the water to wash it down. Oh well, a holiday dinner out on the town and things are bound to not go smoothly, but how can one mess up a steak dinner?
We stayed at Hilton in Seattle and DoubleTree in San Jose on our way to and from Hawaii. It was a perfect place to start and end our vacation! Both hotels had a Spencer's and we dined at both. The service was excellent as was the food. Our flight to the mainland was a little late, so we made a reservation with Open Table. It was reassuring to know we were expected and we could enjoy our meal.
Great place for Steak - very typical silicon valley crowd. A lot of people of corporate expenses, not much family style. Food is very good, I have been here a few times and the service is varies from good to very good. When it is busy the kitchen can be slow. But for business it is good. Nicely decorated and just walking distance to San Jose Airport (Not recommended - because of the busy traffic).
Spencer's offers delicious salads, steaks, chops and some seafood, in the upper price brackets, with a good, but pricey, selection of wines. Maybe it's about Sunday, but while we have had good meals and good service here, the service was definitely worse than most restaurants this Sunday night - missed orders (and no apology for it), lack of wine awareness (the last of it), unhelpful and uncaring service by Minh. If this were the norm, I'd never return, but better service at other times merely means there is serious inconsistency and supervision here.
Everything except the services was good. I was quite surprised and disappointed with the service throughout the night. Upon checking in with the maitre d' she didn't greet us, and after confirming my reservation she POINTED us to our table and said "look for them behind the curtain." While the actual meal was great, our waitress, although very courteous and polite, rarely came around. We had to go to the bar to have a wine bottle opened, which would have been a $25 corkage fee for them! Very disappointed.
For the price you are better off going to a real steakhouse. After being rushed to take our order, it took awhile for us to get our appetizer and then even longer to have our entrees arrive. The steaks were ordered to be cooked medium but came out to be nearly well-done. The saving grace was the creamed corn. All in all, it was an experiment worth taking now knowing that we can cross this place off of our list of any worthy steakhouses.
Spencer's is upscale, has very well selected beef and other dishes (but remember, it's a steak house!) and unfortunately, wines that are marked up to the point of dissuasion. No need to do that in today's economy, even in an upper end restaurant - sell more at a mdoerate price, or less at a higher price, and Spencer's has chosen the latter. Service can be variable - ours was a knowledgeable and attentive waitperson, but others seemed distracted and inattentive.
We arrived for lunch just as the restaurant was opening, so it was not very busy, which may be why it was so quiet. Service, at least at that time, was good. The waiter was efficient though not overly-friendly. I ordered salmon. It was just OK--kind of small and dry in a sauce that sounded more interesting than it actually was. My companions ordered steaks and seemed to really enjoy them. They definitely looked good. Next time: steak!
This restaurant was referred by my boyfriend's boss and yelp.We came in on a Sunday night for dinner expecting great food and service. It was a bit disappointing, our steak was hard to chew, the service was not good neither, took forever for the waiters to come to our table, when we asked for Tabasco sauce, one of the waiter gave us two almost empty bottles. However, the scenery was nice, loved the fire place, it was quiet and romantic scenery.
Lunch service needs to pick up the pace. We were sitting down for over 15 minutes before receiving our menus, bread or water. Not sure why the fireplace was lit when it was 75 degrees outside? Many people at our table commented on it being too hot to have the fireplace lit.
My boyfriend had the prime Spencer's steak (ribeye) & I had the filet mignon. We ordered crabcakes as an appetizer, sauteed spinach & hash browns for our sides. Ribeye was very tender & not at all fatty. The filet mignon was also tender & cooked to perfection at medium rare. Seared on the outside, tender on the inside. Crabcakes were delicious - flaky with lots of crab meat, laid over sliced grilled artichoke hearts accompanied by crispy greens which looked to be pea sprouts & a mayo based sauce. The spinach was sauteed lightly with cherry tomatoes & was a perfect green vegetable with the steaks. The hash browns were crispy & tasty, although a bit on the salty side. Service was good, but nothing spectacular. Would come here again
We have been here before and always receive great service! Spencer's prime rib eye and any sides are can't miss dishes. End the dinner with the chocolate fantasy cheesecake, share it, if your too stuffed or take it to go if you can't finish it. I ate it later that night! It's better than Cheesecake Factory.
This is a generic steak house. The steaks were good, the sides were okay. When we arrived we were the only customers (no vibe at all). Our waiter might well have been a droid, repeating verbatim his canned message. We froze. The decor was from the last century. At least it was costly. We won't go back.
This was about the 4th or 5th time we have been to Spencer's. As usual, our meal was very good with very good service. We usually order the same thing everytime (Spencer's rib eye, creamed spinach, and garlic mashed potatoes). The last time we went it seemed they changed the recipe on the spinach, so we tried the creamed corn this time instead. It was good, not great. I think on future visits we will have to pick another vegetable. All in all, Spencer's is one of our favorite Bay Area steak restaurants, and we've been to all of them.
This was our 3rd time dining at Spencers in San Jose. It was fabulous!
It was a special occasion - my Husband's Birthday. They reserved a great table for
us and also provided a wonderful *complimentary* cheesecake dessert.
The service, food and ambiance was superb!
We were there for a business lunch. Menu options were balanced - plenty of options for varying needs. Food was very good - both of my colleagues ordered steaks and they were prepared perfectly. I had a salmon entree which was excellent. Service was not consistent - not sure if they were understaffed or the waiter was giving us time for our conversation, but it took quite a long time to order. Because of the quality of the food, I would give them another chance.
I went to Spencers on a business lunch. It was perfect. The food here is always excellent and the menu has a wide variety of choices without being overbearing (maybe 15 items on the lunch menu). It is not overcrowded and you can even stop in without a reservation as there is seldom a waiting list here.
You can also connect to the hotel lobby wifi from the restaurant for free Internet while you have your lunch
Oh, and don't forget that they validate parking for up to 3 hours while you eat. As the hotel parking is $6/hr this is a very nice touch.
My wife & I ordered filet mignons. The cuts of meat were excellent, with no sign of fat. The flavor was very good, but in order to turn very good into excellent, I'm guessing that one would need to purchase of the enhancements; these are 4 different sauces you can add to your steak, such as the brandy peppercorn sauce or the crab & bernaise "Oscar" sauce. Everything is a la carte, so if you want veggies or starch, you need to order it separately.
not very happy,it was our 25th anniversary, and we asked for a private area, soon after we were seated in an empty area, a group of five men were seated right next to our table. the restaurant was aware of our anniversary and yet not even a "Happy Anniversary", the food was okay and so was the service, but on a previous visit both were spectacular; making it our top choice for the special day. will more than likely try another steak house next time
