Spencer's For Steaks and Chops Ratings and Reviews
We ate here twice in one week. The seafood was amazing. To start us off, we had the french onion soup, Ahi tuna & king crab cakes. The mango/pineapple salsa was perfect with the wasabi cream on the Ahi. We had the Chilean Sea Bass served over a lovely lobster risotto. Fabulous! The second night, we went another route and were equally satisfied. We opened with the slab bacon (bacon chunks served with peanut butter, blackberry jam and almond brittle) and it is something you have to try. Superb! For the entree, we had the Spencer's Ribeye and the Wagyu Ribeye. Both were seasoned and cooked perfectly (if you like it a bit on the rare side). Both steaks are so rich, we only ordered Maitake mushrooms to have with the meal. They proved to be an excellent accent. The wine and cocktail list is large enough to find something perfect to pair with your meal even at most any budget.
Message to management. Chang your wine pricing policy. Charging 4 - 5 times the retail price of wines is outright stupid and is insulting to customers. Prices are $30 - $100 per bottle MORE than Ruth Chris. It literally inhibits customers completely enjoying their meal knowing that a restaurant cares so little about them that they are willing to price gouge them in a captive environment. The policy is stupid and neither I nor my companies do business with stupid policies. We will no longer reimburse expenses incurred at Spencer’s for anything.
We had excellent service and the food was delicious. The wedge salad was one of the best I have ever eaten. All filets were cooked perfectly and were very tender. The sides we chose were very good and were great accompaniments to the meal. Our server was very attentive and anticipated our needs throughout our meal. A very enjoyable time. Thank you.
Thanksgiving grossly disappointing. Sluggish, inattentive service, cold food ruined a nice holiday gathering At $55 per person, would have expected more when we have had other pleasant experience there.
No tablecloths greatly diminished the quality level of a supposed fine dining establishment
By far one of the best, if not THE best, ribeye steak I've ever had. Delicious lobster mac and cheese and gratin potatoes. Highly recommend the bbq prawns for an appetizer. Fantastic wine menu. Spencer's is one of our favorite places to go for fine dining and delicious food.
I had the lamb chops, which were superb--best I've had in years for both quality and quantity. The food and service were prompt. The sides are also excellent--try the truffle French fried potatoes for an interesting change. The wine and beer choices are good. The price isn't low, but it's fair for the quality of food and service. This was a business dinner, and the noise level was low enough to allow easy discussion. Spencer's is in a central location at the downtown Hilton, with free parking under the building (get the ticket stamped). Highly recommended.
Our food came out at different times. Then some of it was cold on arrival. Our waitress was clueless and was it not for the server who was perceptive we would not have received a warm replacement. Self proclaimed best steak in Utah was far from being close to the best in town. Will never return to this restaurant.
Once upon a time there was no better food or service in Salt Lake City than Spencer's. This time was mediocre at best. There wasn't anything really *wrong* with the service but I've had much better at Pallet and HSL recently. The food was so-so. Our reservation was made 3 weeks in advance for a birthday (which I know they knew because when they called to confirm they mentioned it), yet in a nearly empty restaurant they tried to seat us in the bar next to a table with a baby. They use food runners now instead of the servers serving their own (a very inelegant practice, IMO). Overall it wasn't terrible or anything, only really disappointing given how special Spencer's once was.
We have been to Spencers many times but not for the last year or two. I have to say the food was just mediocre for the pricing. I have had a better steak at Applebee's 😏. My Chilean sea bass was fishy which is always a sign for "not real fresh". And one of the steaks was not cooked right. (Which we were just told that they would let the executive chef know) The service was very poor even though it was not that busy. I am usually not a complainer but to have 20% gratuity added to the bill for just six of us was extreme and might contribute to us not being well taken care of. We are usually great tippers and 20% is a normal tip from us but certainly not when it is not deserving. We will not be going back there!!
Had a great dinner here with my wife. Steaks were very good and cooked right. Service was friendly if a bit slow and not as attentive as I'm used to at this price point. The wine list was very nice and I appreciate them having a half bottle selection, including a very good rioja.
I will start by saying that my wife's Wagyu steak was wonderful. However my prime ribeye tasted like it came from a cheap restaurant or as if they went to a grocery store to pick it up. It came out black on the outside and bloody on the inside; not at all how I had ordered it.
The waiter had an attitude of arrogance throughout the evening.
We dine at many high end restaurants when we travel and have enjoyed the other steak house style restaurants nearby to this one.
Was not an enjoyable experience for us.
The restaurant was FREEZING!! The waiter took our order and never checked back with us once we got our food to make sure everything was to our liking...For the price of the food it was not worth it at all. Plus my friend had several pieces of broken shell from the fish he ordered that almost broke his tooth!!!
I really wanted to like this place and usually have had good experiences with the restaurants in Hiltons. This place was not that. It's very likely the worst meal I've ever had when spending $125. However, I will says the server and greeter were good and pleasant.
Food was way below expectations. Our steaks came out charred and we ordered them medium rare. The cheese was burnt on my French onion soup. The drinks were great and server was attentive. The best part of the evening was the water boy and finally being able to leave. Check that off as a bad dinner experience and we will never go back.
Spencer's was everything I'd hoped, excellent all the way around. Minor complaints would be the following, the margarita at the bar was poor, the AC kicked on mid-meal and was noticeably loud, and the background music was putting me to sleep...give me some Sinatra!
Incredible Experience! The GM introduced himself while I was in the bar for a pre dinner drink which was a perfect introduction to a perfect experience. Great bar staff and service, great service, great food. I highly recommend for a special business or personal meal!
