Spasso Ratings and Reviews
I did love this place - but, we had a really bad experience on Saturday night. I made a reservation on Open Table, said I wanted to be away from the cold blasts from the front door, and when I got there, they just kept asking us to sit outside on the sidewalk. We said "no" three times. The outdoor area is so small, and people walk by on the sidewalk and bump into the tables. Then, they said they had a large party coming in the back, but could "squeeze" us in for an hour back there, so we agreed. The waiter was stressed and very short with us. Our salad was served quickly and then he brought the entree and plopped it down on the table, and we weren't even half finished with our salad - as if to say, "hurry up and get out of here". Then, the large party started trickling in after we were only at the table about 20 minutes, the employees were rushing around shouting at each other and moving chairs, and the large party was a group of very rude young people who appeared inebriated - they were so loud - and shouting at each other. After we were at the table about 40 minutes, they asked if they could move us to the bar, and gave us a tiny glass of port, but it was at the end of the bar where the wait staff kept bumping into our chairs to pick up their orders - the evening was truly a disaster, and I don't know if I will ever go there again. I would have felt better if they would have just said the reservation got mixed up and they didn't have room for us. I offered to go elsewhere if they couldn't accommodate us, but they wanted to "squeeze in" a few extra bucks, I guess. So sad to see a good place let their greed ruin their good reputation. What a disappointment - we felt like we were just annoying the staff the entire time we were there - not welcome at all.
They had given away our 6:30 reservation due to the restaurant overbooking. Never got a table because the wait for a table wasn’t happening.as it was so crowded. So we sat at the bar for dinner. It was my birthday dinner so even though they were nice it didn’t overcome my expectations for my birthday dinner. When we finally got to eat my food it was served warm instead of hot. But I was to hungry by then to send it back
After some good meals this one was a disappointment. Food was under cooked and underwhelming. Not much flavor, and pasta noodles were hard. Service was efficient but lacked any type of interaction or general friendliness. Seemed like everyone was being overworked so they were just running from table to table trying to get things done rather than making it a positive dining experience. Want to give them another chance, but probably will try some other San Carlos spots first .
I used to eat dinner at Spasso with some regularity when I lived down the street, but haven't been back for a few years. That was an oversight.
My girlfriend was supposed to cook, but our schedules didn't work out on a busy afternoon so I started up my OpenTable app and narrowed my choices to the western suburbs. Spasso was about halfway between where we were coming from, so that became our destination.
I had forgotten that they co-own the wine store next door, so the wine prices are quite reasonable for some above-average selections. I had a nice broiled walleye, while my girlfriend went with a well-prepared chicken dish.
The only downside of the evening is that we were seated next to a few boisterous kids who just got out of a soccer game, but we engaged them and ended up having a nice dinner despite the "extra movement and sound".
We will return in a month or two!
We were warmly greeted The service was nice The waitress also our greeter was attentive to us. The food was excellent the three diners had mains of wild mushroom ravioli, paella,& veal piccata. All were savory the Veal picatta was delicious. Compliments to the chef as his sauce was near perfect. We will be back.
I LOVE Spasso!! We go there at least once weekly. The staff is amazingly friendly, attentive and always remember names and likes. The food is very good and ranges from healthy to comfort food. The bar is well equipped with nice cocktails and very good wines. Without hesitation, I highly recommend this place.
My girlfriend moved to Arizona and everytime she comes to visit she loves to have dinner here. The service is always friendly, polite and very professional which is great. The waiters always go beyond and it's great. The food is delicious and it's nice to know that the cooks will accomodate and the dessert menu has a great selection.
Trying too hard to be something it's not
That is an authentic Italian eatery
Staff very friendly and attentive
Menu a bit scattered unfocused
Food not very satisfying in that it's just a step off throughout
Too acid red sauces
Balsamic added to everything for no reason whatsoever
Mushroom brucetta v good
Mains felt almost a bit Sysco like although I'd hope they are not
No deep comforting flavors
Creme brûlée just ok grand mariner?? Didn't taste it
We made a reservation for Spasso at 9:00 pm through the Open Table App. It would have let us make a reservation as late as 9:30. We got there right at 9, and were told that they closed at 8:45. Not really expecting much, I did show them that we had a reservation, and that I could have made an even later reservation. The response I got was "well I don't know anything about that."
Keep your hours on Open Table up to date, and try to give an at least halfheartedly gracious response. I know you're not going to reopen the kitchen for two people. But don't respond in a dismissive and rude manner when it was your own failure to keep your hours up to date that caused 2 customers to waste the time it took to drive to your restaurant. I won't be back.
I love this restaurant and go here for special occasions. i have never had a bad thing on the menu and the waiters and bartenders are nice and friendly. i particularly like the portabella sandwich on the lunch menu. and the sea food pasta on the dinner menu. it's a great place for a date or girl night out. it is a little pricey but everything is delicious!
This is one of my favorite restaurants in downtown San Carlos. The menu has a lot to choose from, and, of the several times I've eaten here, the food has been delicious. So far, I have not been disappointed in the quality of the food. The dip served with bread when you first sit down is especially delicious.
We celebrated my husbands 50th Birthday with 5 other couples. I can not say enough about the exceptional service we received. From the moment we walked in we were greeted and seated. The waitress was amazing and the food was delicious. There was something for everyone, including our vegan diners. Great wine & cocktail menu. We will be back, whether it be two of us or a large group. Thank you Spasso for making my husbands Birthday memorable...
