Great food often using local organic ingredients, great ambience (except when my group gets obnoxious) and excellent service, always.
Enjoyed the meal. Ordered the scallops and also had the pate as an appetizer. Scallops were fresh and not overcooked. Husband ordered the stroganoff and if hit the spot after his 5 hour bike ride. Good flavored meal
Good food and just a short walk from the MATCH. Don't bother with the wines by the glass as the prices are high. Just buy a bottle.
Sparrow was a fortunate find. We were looking for a sustainable restaurant, local/seasonal foods, and we decided on Sparrow. It was the best decision we've ever made. I would chalk this up as my favorite meal in Houston ever. Each course was delicious. We had something from each part of the menu and not one morsel was outshined. I bought a gift card because I can't wait for my local friends to try the place and I can't wait to come back in town to go back there. I know I won't be able to have thget exact same meal because the chef changes the menu daily, but I know whatever he decides to prepare that day will be just as amazing. I miss it already.
Attentive and informative service, delicious appetizers and entrées, and a belly too full for dessert. We will have to make another run at dessert next visit.
We were fans of Sparrow Bar for years, but hadn't been in about a year and a half. Something has changed. The food portions are MUCH smaller, and the quality of the food was WAY down. Monica Pope has always had ingenious, tasty, and interesting food. I have always had a good experience - until this past visit. The portions were very small, a noticeable difference from past experieces. I had the squash soup, that was supposed to have spicey cashews...it was very bland. To me, it tasted like blended squash with nothing else in the soup. For a main course, I had the vegan Chick Pea dish - can't remember more specifics. It tasted like mush with a lot of sweet yellow curry powder. I ate about 5 bites, and that was all I could stomache. My husband had the flat chicken - said he did like it. Our friends had the hang steak, and thought it was good, but WAY overpriced for the cut of meat that it was. For dessert, I had a vanilla cake. It was so dense that it tasted pastey. It had a lemon zest sauce - but it was too strong on the zest. I felt like I was eating lemon peel with a bit of sugary jam. I hate to write a bad review, but I hope something changes before people quit going to Sparrow. Monica is always so creative.
We loved everything but especially the beignets filled with Gruyere
Went here for dinner the night before Valentine's Day. I've been going to Monica Pope's restaurants since Boulevard Bistro and have always had good experiences at Sparrow Bar + Cookshop until last night.....
We sat outside, it was a bit chilly and asked if someone could turn on the outside floor heaters. Staff tried - got one to work and it went out shortly after. Was told no propane. Not a big deal. We sipped on our cocktails and chatted. Our meals were served, I ordered lamb porterhouse which was a good deal fat and some meat. While we were eating the staff came out and started dismantling the patio furniture and bringing tables and chairs and place settings upstairs for a private event I am gathering was the following day. Loud - tables banging, chairs dragging across floor as we are eating our dinner. We were the only ones sitting outside, and it felt like if we didn't finish soon they would take our table as well. It was a weird experience and not at all what I expected from this restaurant based on my past experiences. On the plus side, our waiter was very nice and apologetic for the noise and weirdness of the whole patio dismantling.
There are so many good restaurants in town to chose from, I don't think I'll be returning to Sparrow Bar + Cookshop and can't say I can recommend to my friends.
Shiitake mushroom dumplings were only warm; they were good but could have been warmer. This is not the first time an appetizer was not fully heated. Lamb porterhouse was one small lamb chop and grits, and nothing to get excited about. We've had good experiences at Sparrow, but this was not one.
We went in on a Saturday and were quickly sat. There was a party upstairs, so although the restaurant didn't appear busy, the staff was certainly hustling! Service at first was a bit slow, but our server was on point once we got past our appetizers, which sadly were a little underwhelming. However, by the main course, the tables had turned...our entrees were scrumptious...sidenote - order the brussel sprouts...seriously! The lemon curd cheesecake was delightful! I liked the fact that our waiter was well versed in his wine selections and was able to persuade me to try a white pinot noir...extra kudos for the Oregon wine option! We'll be back. Thanks!
Creative and beautifully executed dishes, flavorful cocktails with a dash of whimsy, warm and attentive service - a much enjoyed and much needed date night we loved at a Houston gem.
The food was unique and amazing. They should bottle the dumpling sauce! I had the scallops, which were, I think, among the best I have had. The Brussels sprouts were terrific, as was the cheesecake. We were a party of 8, so we tried a lot of different apps and sides, each one as good or better than the last. I will go back the next time my travel brings me to downtown Houston. The wine list was short, but with excellent selections. The music was alternative and also terrific. The decor is hip, but comfortable. The servers were accommodating and attentive. If you are looking for something special and not your average steak or seafood place, Sparrow should be at the top of your list!
Excellent comfort and earthy food. This was our first time and we appreciated the great service and ambience. The food came out in a timely fashion and as ordered. Some of the appetizers, such as the butter but squash soup, were a little heavy on the sweet side. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the bread pudding was fantastic. All in all despite being a little overpriced, we had an excellent dinner.
We stumbled upon this restaurant/bar by accident, looking for a place to eat within walking distance of Houston's stunning new MATCH theater. The ambience, the food, the service, and the bar offerings were all of the highest order---I couldn't have asked for a better meal, and if I lived in Houston I'd make a point of going there for dinner as often as I could. (I might go back to Houston just to eat at Sparrow!)
I've always loved Monica Pope's restaurants. The hostess forgot to check us in on arrival. We arrived a little early and sat at the bar until the rest of our party arrived. The bar was great and the bartender made us exactly what we wished. The food was good but the service was rather odd. Massive wine pouring that emptied the bottle after 3 glasses (we had a party of 5). They tried to charge us for the tip twice. I would't have noticed it and was VERY happy my spouse saw it. Things were fixed in the end but then I received an email saying I no-showed the restaurant. We won't be back :(
Great food, great service. You have to go once.
Then you'll want to go again!!
First time for my wife and I to eat here. Wanted to try someplace we had not been. Definitely liked the food and service. No complaints in the slightest for either. Wanted to have a glass of red with dinner, but they are very limited in this area. Only 3 choices for wine-by-the-glass and they were a bit too proud of them when it came to pricing, so we saved the funds in that area to use elsewhere later.
Be adventuresome and try as many appetizers, entrees and sides as your table can manage. There really isn't anything on the menu that isn't delicious. The cocktails are delicious #4 is my favorite and the wine list is quite good.
The food was good, but over priced. The service was terrible. Appetizers came out before our drink order was taken. Dinner came out before our new place setting was put down. Server brought us our check without asking us if we wanted dessert. I have dined there before and had a wonderful time. Last night was definitely not their A game.
Food was excellent. This restaurant is definitely on my "fave" list! Our server was friendly and service was great!
We have eaten here several times and took friends who were visiting from out of town. The appetizers are OK, but the entrees we ordered were all fantastic. The hanger steak was particularly good. The sauce that comes with it is rich and delicious. We ordered a double order of brussels sprouts for the table and they didn't disappoint. The service is friendly, but it took a while to get our appetizers and drinks.
I've been to Sparrow before however this time our drink and food orders were mixed up several times. Plus one of the guests in our party was charged over the amount designated on their credit card. I won't return
excellent! beautiful inside & out, kind & knowledgeable staff, terrific wine selection, interesting & fun menu - we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at "Sparrow Bar + Cookshop"
restaurant looks great when you walk in; bartender was nice if not overly attentive. host was nice, but disappeared when it was time for us to be seated. our waiter ended up seating us, and when it turned out that we weren't going to be "big spenders," he basically ignored us the rest of the meal. my osso buco was yummy, but my wife ended up paying $30 for a piece of salmon on a plate. Nothing else. I'm not kidding. we will not be returning .
This experience was not good at all...menu seems weird...sometimes farm to table is good sometimes you just need to go to the grocery store.
Food was great, decent price. Drinks were good, not the best I've ever had - easily overpriced in my opinion. Service was lovely and ambiance was fun and relaxed.
Great food and quiet lunch was just what the Dr. ordered. This is not your meat and potato place, and thank goodness. There are enough of those. Simple food with a twist...that's what I would call it. Enjoy!
The food and drinks were fantastic.
I expected more for the cost. I chose the tasting menu ($45) with the wine paring ($25). The dishes were tasty but not outstanding. The salad was fresh but not memorable. The soup was respectable and the beef was perfectly cooked. The wine pours were about 2 oz per course so you are getting one glass of wine for $25. The first was a Prosecco which is the affordable end of sparkling. The other two wines were fine, not wow. The last wine arrived after I started my last course. I suggest getting ordering off the regular menu. Pick a good glass of wine and save a few bucks. Was it an $80 meal, no.
This restaurant has a fantastic atmosphere and the menu is delightful. The waiters are proud of there knowledge of wine ;).
Everything we ordered was prepared perfectly. The choice of ingredients with each dish was delicious. Wonderful food and wine! Great place to celebrate my daughters engagement!
You can tell a lot about an eatery when you get a "signature" dish (which happened to be the scallops) and it arrives to your table pale white and undercooked.
Then i waited for my dessert for 30 mins. When we said something, it seemed they rushed the dish to us, leaving the dough uncooked. Really disappointing... where is Tafia when you need it...
We loved all the fresh, amazing dishes so much... That's why we ordered a variety of sides and appetizers, so we (my husband & I) could share our dishes without being stuffed. We absolutely loved the brussel sprouts, the mac & cheese, the chick fries, date with a pig, the squash blossoms... Oh! And, we ended our meal with cheesecake (which was crazy delicious)!
Go to Sparrow Bar + Cookshop as soon as possible! So good. We went during happy hour, which was even better :)
Menu is interesting but was disappointed with what came out. Overall most dishes lacked flavor depth and complexity. It is a cool space with a good atmosphere though.
Excellent food, but there was cold air blowing on us and the piped music was too loud. They refused to move us, even though the restaurant was 2/3 empty, and wouldn't turn down the music. The server wasn't very attentive I think largely because we don't drink alcohol so he couldn't run up a big tab on us.
Our meal was delicious. It was very noisy though. I think there just happened to be a huge group that showed up for the happy hour. We will definitely be back.
Do not eat here. The overall experience was awful-food, service, drinks.
If you are looking for something amazing try North Italia. So much better! Good luck if you decide on Sparrow.
Sparrow is a constant favorite - always a fresh menu per the seasons + what is in season. Excellent cocktail and wine list. Monica Pope is a true visionary in the culinary scene of Houston!
I don't know why I don't think of Sparrow more often, it's really a gem. The menu is small but that keeps me from having to be too distracted. The server was great, but you can tell he knew the chef must be particular about how she wants to serve her dishes, and rightly so, but ... if I know I don't like something and ask to not have it included it means I'll enjoy the dish more then if I have to pick out the bits I don't like. I'm eating it, not the chef ;)
Overall, it's an excellent venture and I'm always glad to see it there when I drive by and know it's made its mark on Houston.
Great menu, great service! Brunch was perfect!
