Spalti Ratings and Reviews
One of our daughters suggested Spalti as a fun place to show off the California Avenue neighborhood to some out-of-towners (from Minneapolis and Cleveland, no less) and it was as accommodating as ever--including gluten free pasta dishes. The staff coped effortlessly with our gang of eight and were most appreciative of our visit. That is a great way to guarantee return visits. Bravo!
We have had several meals at Spalti and we have enjoyed every one. Spalti serves reasonably well prepared Italian food to a clientele of local families and groups. It’s not chi-chi but the staff treats you well, service is correct and friendly, and you will enjoy the food.
Three of us came to lunch here for a meeting. It was fairly quiet as most patrons opted to sit outside. So that was perfect for us. My husband ordered the Fettucine and Chicken. Our friend ordered the Spinach Salad with homemade raspberry dressing. I ordered the Linguine con Vongole. When the dishes came out, my pasta was the wrong one. The server was apologetic and asked the kitchen to rush out the linguine con vongole. While I have no doubt that the dish was cooked, three out of the 10 clams I ate had sand in them and the dish was under-seasoned. It dampened my appetite quite a bit and disappointing since two days earlier, I had the same dish and it was delicious. My husband had no issues with his fettucine. They were very accommodating and substituted the spinach with plain pasta.
Our group had lunch in the private room, which worked well for us. The food and service was good and we all enjoyed our meals. Call well in advance if you want to reserve this room. The
catering menu offered a nice selection of items to choose from and reasonably priced. I would
definitely reserve this restaurant again for future events.
This was our 4th visit and this time w brought a group of us. As always the staff were attentive, and friendly. We have a diverse group as far as enjoying food. Everyone found a good dish for them. My husband always has the veal with the lemon and caper sauce..delicious. They were very accommodating, making minor changes to dishes to cover individual preferences. The Chianti was super though inexpensive. Desserts were really yummy... we shared them, so got a great cross section.
The Tiramisu was good, and the mousse. Thank you again for light Italian food, that is always served hot, and with a smile. Thank you too for an unrushed meal that we so enjoyed
Often hard to find place where you can have quiet conversation. Spalti is perfect. The food is very good--my seafood risotto was delicious and so was the arugula salad. I always choose this place when my friend and I meet and know we have a lot to catch up on. Never feel rushed and the servers are very attentive. Also, like to sit outside.
Only criticism is the bread is not very tasty which is probably good for me--end up eating less.
I frequented Spalti for years and have never been disappointed. The food is outstanding and the service is fantastic. I never feel rushed even when they are busy. The prices are extremely reasonable. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Palo Alto. Highly recommended.
We love Italian food, and chose Spalti after reading reviews saying that the food there was authentic. Well, those reviewers must have visited very different parts of Italy than my wife and I visited. Of the four dishes at our table, none had much flavor - which was the opposite of the cuisine that we enjoyed in Italy a few years ago.
When we arrived, Spalti was mostly empty, and about ⅔ of the tables stayed empty while we were there. Now, I understand why.
We won't be back.
I love the food here.. It really is Northern Italian cuisine at its best. The clam chowder I had was the best I have ever had. The Linguine with prawns, amazingly light and tasty. My husband had the veal.. super sauce and vegetables cooked al dente not raw or slushy!. The coconut tart was sweet and light. The chianti is good, and pinot grigio lovely. Coffee here is Italian, strong but not bitter. Service was great..we wanted a slow but attentive service and were very pleased. Thank you for authentic Italian food, as an Italian I really appreciate this restaurant ,Other "American Italian" food is so heavy. Relax and enjoy, and pay the very reasonable bill...thank you
We loved this place. We were celebrating my husbands birthday. We had a relaxed romantic dinner. The service was amazing, no rush. The food was very Northern Italian, and authentically so...I have family I visit in Northern Italy and this food reflected that cuisine. It is on the lighter side. The wine list was extensive . We had a Pinot Grigio and a Chianti..both were excellent. The clams were clean and very tasty. We both chose veal, mine with Marsala and mushrooms , my husbands with wine and capers. It was the best I have ever eaten, tender and delicious. The tiramisu was yummy. I had a cappuccino, reminded me of my Aunts in Italy. This is a super place if you are looking for an unhurried dinner. There were no children present when we were there... delightful. Staff were very respectful and made our visit all that we wanted it to be. I am sure that if you were in a hurry they could accommodate that. The whole bill came to $114 which was inexpensive considering that we both selected food from the whole menu. They gave us a glass of free wine to have with dessert... We will be going back soon
Not sure what I was thinking getting a salad - salmon/avocado salad was poor in avocado & other toppings for this price I'd expect more than three little slices of avocado and more topping than just few slivered almonds - everyone's pasta dish looked delicious! I'll get pasta next time.
We have gone to Spalti for years and have enjoyed it, but not this time. We both had spaghetti, which was really tasteless . The Caesar salad was equally poor - some romaine lettuce, a few pieces of Parmesan and done. The broccoli soup was very basic with little flavor. So disappointing. Will not go back as I know they changed hands recently, and this food is not the quality or taste that it used to be.
Reservations were made for a group of us. The restaurant atmosphere and décor is nice and the staff were pleasant though not very engaging with any of our group. My meal was good - taste and presentation. The problem was my portion. I ordered a chicken entrée and I received only half of a butterflied chicken breast, perhaps one of others in my group received the other half. Is this typical for the San Francisco/Palo Alto area or is the Chef/Management at Spalti being overly cost effective? Well I will be trying other restaurants in the area before returning to Spalti. Too bad since it was otherwise a nice evening for our group.
First time here at Spalti which we tried due to the wonderful comments from other diners. What a great find with such a selection of Italian dishes and specials. The special mahi mahi as well as the lamb chops were just delicious. That was after a very fresh salad with arugula, beets and orange slices. To top off the dinner was the sticky toffee dessert ... amazing. Freddy was most attentive throughout. We'll be back.
I would say that this restaurant was pretty good, but I think it isn't too kid friendly. As a parent, you can't enjoy your food unless your kids are happy...and if they're hungry, and there is nothing that they'll eat on the menu and your waiter is rigid to the day's menu, it will a miserable time dining. While this restaurant is a good place to dine, I rate it poorly for children.
Lunch for 8. My 2nd time here. I had wanted to come back for dinner, but not this time.
Everyone enjoyed their meal. I had the penne Spalti, which had a great/rich cream tomato sauce and delicious sausage with fresh tomatoes.
I still didn't get my lemonade refilled; this is becoming a sticking point.
The place was busy with holiday lunch parties. Everything went smoothly and efficiently. I liked Spalti better this time, as this was a larger crowd, all of whom were enthusiastically enjoying their entrees.
