Spalti Ratings and Reviews
I went with a few friends to a gals lunch out on a Tuesday at Spalti.
The place is pretty with mottled walls and great art prints. We loved the menu which had many options. One gal had special food needs and they made a pasta dish to her specs, while two of us had salads with beautifully grilled warm salmon in top. I chose arugula and the other gal spinach. We could have chosen chicken, shrimp or other toppers. The service was attentive and accommodating, and the prices are typical for the area. There are several restaurants on the street, but folks who look past Spalti are missing a nice experience. For larger groups they even have a private banquet room
Friendly servers. Fantastic flavors and good portions. I had a heaping pile of empty clam shells from my linguine con vongole and still had just as many in my plate, un-eaten. I only left them behind because I was more than satisfied. Lovely home-made pasta.
Our latest visit to Spalti featured the same fine Italian food, good service, and reasonable wine prices that we have come to love in the last few years. Sure, it doesn't have the buzz of some other places, but it's nice to have something reliable that has become our local go-to restaurant.
I was thrilled to find the lobster ravioli returned to the menu. It appears that the opening of La Boheme a few doors down is having a negative impact on Spalti's patronage, which is a shame. It is a great dining spot and deserves support. I have been a faithful customer for over 16 years.
We have lived in Palo Alto for over 20 years and this was out first visit to Spalti. We were surprised that it was not more crowded on a Saturday night especially when Open Table did not have a reservation available for the time we wanted.
The food was very good and everyone in my party (4) would go back again.
Fish order had to be sent back because it was too salty and vegatables were cold. It took a very long time until another plate was delivered and was satisfactory . An order of capellini with pesto was absolutely tasteless. There was NO garlic in the pesto! First time ever no garlic in an Italian dish!!!
I hadn't been to Spalti's in a while, and was pleasantly surprised. I remembered it as a good spot with so-so food, but that's no longer the case-- the food we had was excellent-- four different entrees, soups and salads, and all of them well-prepared, flavorful, and nicely presented. My carpaccio had too much mustard for my taste but was otherwise great. Hubby's canneloni was superb, excellent sauce. Vegetarian friend had the Portabello dish and loved it. Low-carbs friend had the gamberoni, no pasta, and loved it. Ambience was lovely, service attentive and prompt. We will definitely be back!
We had a birthday dinner there on a Saturday night; we had celebrated my mother-in-law's 80th birthday with 50 guests 7 years earlier at Spalti. The place was deserted-- we were the only diners. The food was OK, but the cocktails were mediocre and the service was poor, despite the fact that we were the only diners in the place.
VEAL, at least for me. What I love most about this place, relaxing and not rushed through our meal. Very European style. We've found the service, attentive, and knowledgeable. We've invited friends and family, and there were no issues, handling larger groups. The missus, has spent time and has family in northern Italy, she says the food preparation, is spot on. The sauces are not the heavy kind, so if that's your bag, you may want to stay with the southern prep, or Olive Garden. Desserts are excellent, as well as the after dinner coffee offerings. Don't think it's too good if you want a quick 'n out. We also had our wedding and dinner reception here, they made it seamless, bent over backward to make it a memorable, carefree day.
It was our first visit to the restaurant which was highly recommended by friends. My friend from France and I were most impressed with the excellent cuisine, the atmosphere and the service. It was superbe! I can't wait to go back with my husband. Many thanks for the wonderful meal.
A real local gem for California Ave area of Palo Alto. Many people don't seem to know about it yet. They are missing something. Great setting, great food and good service. This is one of the few places for a good dinner or lunch where you can hear and talk without screaming at each other. Wine list is good and they have a full bar. Wife and I have been eating there for years and they are consistently good.
I love this place. We were there when it opened for dinner, so it was empty. We were there to discuss our upcoming wedding with a couple of friends, so needed a slow service. They were well aware of that and acted accordingly. We were seated in the main area, and were able to hear each other. The decor is very pleasing. Our waitress was not usually a waitress but served us well. She managed to get our order right and served . The food was good in flavor. It was a perfect amount for dinner no doggy bags needed. The clam and linguini was to die for... not overly spiced...well balanced with clams in shell. A touch of parmesan cheese and pepper.. and I was in heaven. My fiancee had the veal scallopini. He loved the sauce, and meat, but was a bit disappointed with the spaghetti... would have preferred potatoes . My girlfriend had the salmon, and again really enjoyed that but would have preferred a different starch... she felt the spaghetti was at odds with the taste of the fish. Her husband had the veal Marsala. The sauce was super, the veal was a little skimpy and the veggies could have been more. Again the spaghetti served with the meal was not appropriate. The wine list was good, we tried several wines and a beer all were good. My guy had a "modified" Irish coffee, i.e. made with bourbon...he was happy. The manager brought us a variety of desserts... tiramisu, chocolate mousse, panna cotta , and a sponge cake with raspberry drizzle. All were fresh and delicious. My favorite was the Tiramisu. The panna cotta was unusual, the apple in it gave it a more granular consistency, tasty but I prefer the creamy , smooth version. The mouse was chocolaty but was a little dry. The sponge was lovely and was served with delicious gelato. If you are looking for a leisurely dinner with friends you want to talk to, this is your place. If you are starving ....portions are not huge. Staff are delightful, attentive and accommodating.
Chose this restaurant to celebrate our 40th anniversary. Everything was perfect from start to finish. Lots of appealing dishes on the menu. We both loved our salads, entrees & desert. Low corkage charge for this area ($16) appreciated as are the appropriate prices & great service. This is now our favorite local restaurant.
We booked the private room for a Thanksgiving dinner for 18 and were delighted with the quality of the food and the service. I worked with the restaurant on the menu choices and the the cuisine was perfect for us, very well presented and delicious. Small attention to detail, hot coffee service after the meal and refilling our wine glasses unasked, made this a wonderful dining experience.
While visiting Stanford we wanted to go out for a nice seafood dinner. Spalti was near our hotel so decided to give it a try. A great choice. We were greeted warmly and given a nice table. The pasta dishes were great. My wife had sausage and chicken with gluten free penne. I had the clams with linguini. The special desert of date cake with ice cream was amazing. And the complimentary muscat aperitif was a perfect compliment to a great meal.
Food was good. Service started out attentive, but we had to ask to get our check so we could leave. The restaurant had few diners at a peak lunch time on a Monday. That was surprising, but more so because the waiter served the food and then disappeared. Nice place, but service could have been better.
I went to Spalti's for dinner and ordered the polenta with mushrooms and wine sauce appetizer followed by the triangoli entrée. The triangoli consisted of five large triangular raviolis stuffed with spinach and cheese covered with a tasty tomato sauce. I thought the food and
service were very good.
If you're looking for a high-energy location for a Saturday night dinner, this is not the place. Only a few tables were taken, and the place was quiet. You could converse in a normal tone.
Service was low-key and not especially attentive, which is hard to excuse, given the sparse crowd. After the server brought our menus, we actually had to request the wine list.
Dinner, however, was entirely tasty--lamb chops and lobster ravioli. Dessert also was good.
Spalti focuses on Northern Italian cuisine and does it well. The mussels appetizer special served well as the main course. The arugula salad was a little long on the arugula and short on the walnuts and other accoutrements but was not overdressed as is too often the case at other places. The carpaccio was carefully prepared and presented with a generous piece of lemon instead of a stingy sliver, which was much appreciated. The cannelloni special was well-received by all. Overall a very pleasant dining experience helped by impeccable service.
The restaurant was VERY noisy. My food was LUKEWARM when it arrived. We were a party of four and so I didn't send it back. If it were my husband and I alone I certainly would have. The other couple we were with likes this restaurant very much, but we thought the food was mediocre for the price.
