We had a reservation for 7pm but unfortunately the table before us didn't leave until almost 8. We had three kids with us so by the time we got seated they were pretty exhausted and hungry. I would have thought the restaurant would have a better handle on seating times and if not then would offer to bring appetizers to the kids at a minimum. When we finally got seated it took forever to get our meals and a number of the orders were wrong by the time they finally arrived. It was a bit frustrating because it is not inexpensive dining but the attitude by the wait staff was pretty lacking in concern and overall the establishment didn't seem to care about our wait or the mistakes in our orders. The food was good but if it weren't for the location and proximity to where we were staying I would not opt to go again. They need to step it up in terms of service.

We were staying at the Purgatory resort and this is the best dining close to the resort. The menu had a great variety. The specialty is beef however we had the salmon and it was very good as well. The salads, beet and spinach, were also very good. There restrarant wasn't busy the night we were there but we couldn't get reservations earlier in our stay so make reservations early. The service was also very good and the noise level was low so it was easy to have a conversation.

We overheard the bartender say two waiters had called in sick, leaving only one waitress for the whole place. We had reservations, but were seated 25 minutes late. After being seated we ordered drinks and our meals. My salad came out 30 minutes later, but not my wife’s or our drinks. After 10 more minutes I got up and found our waitress letting her know we were missing a salad. Five minutes later she brought out a salad, it was the wrong kind. My wife was scared to send it back. A total of one hour passed from ordering the meal before it was actually delivered. Our drinks finally arrived a few minutes after our meal. The food was very good, just not a good night on service. Waitress was nice, just overwhelmed. I suggest the hostess let guests know ahead of time when similar situations occur. A complimentary drink, appetizer, or dessert would have been a good way for the restaurant to say to the patrons “we are sorry about the inconvenience and want to try and make-up for it by giving you...!”

Service was so bad that we couldn’t enjoy the food (which was good). 40 minutes before we had the drinks and went on from there.

New Year's Eve. We had a 7:00 reservation and were seated at nearly 7:00 on the dot. It was 7:25 before we had water and drink orders taken, 8:00 when our salads arrived and 9:00 when our entrees were served. Way too long, especially as we watched others seated way after us getting served their food. We had to butter our bread with spoons as there were no knives on the table, and we had to ask for water refills.

We finally spoke to the manager and she comped our drinks and wine as an apology. We eat at the Sow's Ear several times a year, and this is the first time we've experienced something like this and we will not hold it against them.

All of that said, the food was amazing. The salads were fresh and inviting, and everyone enjoyed their entrees. We had steaks, salmon, and scallops and all were delicious.

The steaks were awesome, per usual. We're very picky about our beef and its always awesome. I love the twist on the artichoke and spinach appetizer. The hot cookies and milk were the cherry on the cake. Always a great experience!

Food excellent. Steaks cooked to perfection. Upstairs great view in front of window but large noisy table next to us. Woman who seated us and poured our water very pleasant and professional. Our server seemed rushed and inattentive. Asked twice to have candle on table lit...never lit it. Rarely saw server after salad served. Husband had to go find her to pay the bill long after finishing entrees.

Tonight we were celebrating our 19th anniversary, it was really on Monday off 9th.
The food was incredible, I like steak still mooing rare and it is hard to do with a 2 inch Filet but it was cooked perfectly! My husband ordered the Trout Special he ate everything on his plate. We had the maple Bourbon creme brulee for dessert awesome doesn't even describe it!
We take family and friends when they are in town,. We will be back, maybe for birthday in December!😘

We are from Texas & at every visit to our condo we make time for a nice dinner at The Sow's Ear! We love the steaks, the salad and the sides. The mountain views are wonderful, the food is First Class, and the waitress is friendly and efficient!

Nightly special was duck breast and it was superb. My wife had the petite filet and it was the best anywhere. The views of the snow capped mountains framed in Fall colors was breathtaking.

Great service, gorgeous setting. One of us had an incredible meal, one of us just had the misfortune of getting a bad cut of meat. Aside from that, highly recommended. We would like to return for another meal and maybe an over night stay on the property.

We went to Sow's Ear for my birthday celebration and everything was perfect! Savannah, our server, made sure all details were met - a perfect table, timing of drinks and all of the courses, etc. We would definitely recommend Sow's Ear for anyone visiting the Durango area.

Food and service were really excellent. This was unexpectedly by far the best of the three nice restaurants we tried in Durango for my birthday weekend. The pig candy and duck confit springroll starters were wonderful as were our steaks. Our waitress was absolutely perfect, always there when needed but never intrusive. She even perfectly handled the out of stock on two wines we wanted, and the replacement wine she recommended was delightful. The room had some mild echo issues, but was not bad. Try to get a table downstairs by the big window for less noise and better view.

Basically a good steak house. Fantastic views. Food very good. Romantic and cozy.
Service very poor. Hostess did nothing to smooth our bar wait before we were seated. (We had a reservation.)
My husband had to go to the bar to order a drink. As we were seated no one offered to carry our drinks to the table as we walked through the bar up a flight of stairs to our table. ( We are in our late 60's.) once seated, we waited for 20 minutes before being acknowledged. Had to ask for services from our very busy waiter that normally are quickly provided in a restaurant of this quality. Yes, we will go back, but will hope service is improved and that we arrived on an "off" night.

I was looking for a restaurant to meet friends who were staying at Purgatory. I don't understand why this place gets good reviews. The service was excellent. The food was mediocre at best. I had a good Caesar salad, but the sauce on the fish was overly rich, completely overwhelming the dish. I had to scrape it off. The pasta dish (ricotta & figs) was also too rich and sweet. Steak also reported to be so-so. I would not recommend this restaurant, and next time I will bring take-out or ask friends make the drive into Durango.

The food was outstanding. From the crab cakes to the salad to our steaks, everything was cooked perfectly. And so tasty. I am not a foody but this meal could make me one. The servers were attentive but not bothersome. It's a little pricey but worth it. And the view across the valley is enough to engross you during the luxurious meal.
