Perfect evening. Great steaks. The fresh baked cookies rocked.
We have never had a bad meal here, and this visit was no exception. The steaks, salads, soup and sides were excellent. The drinks were great too. Love the location of this restaurant; we sat by the window and looked at the beautiful snow covered mountains. A "locals restaurant", I don't know of anyone who doesn't love having dinner at The Sow's Ear. A dinner house like this is NEEDED on the north side of Durango. We love the food, but also love the fact we don't have to drive into town. We bring visitors here when they visit; they too like knowing they are going to a "locals" place.
amazing as always! brought our friends who had never been there (so they could experience chef george's talent before he leaves!) and they are already planning on coming back again!
Wouldn't go to Durango and not eat at Sow's Ear! It's a favorite! We eat there several times when we are there if we can.
Exceptional food and service at Valentine's dinner (or any other time for that matter).
We have been very fortunate to dine at Sow’s Ear. My wife had Petite Filet while I had perhaps the best Rib Eye steak ever. We’ve never had anything other than a superior dining experience there—ever. We were heartbroken to learn that there will a change of ownership on March 31. We will hope whomever assumes the job of attempting to maintain the reputation and clientele, that they are up to it. Sow’s Ear has been on the higher echelon of dining in a town where we have so many quality dining houses. Thanks for the memories, and we hope for the best. Get up there before it is too late.
We are all hoping that new ownership won’t be some genius who has a better idea for another pizza parlor. We are all pretty sure we’ve already seen all those options before.
Sow's Ear Valentine's Day dinner was impeccable and Crissy and staff never disappoint!!
Excellent food and service! Hands down one of the best Durango restaurants.
We had a reservation for 7pm but unfortunately the table before us didn't leave until almost 8. We had three kids with us so by the time we got seated they were pretty exhausted and hungry. I would have thought the restaurant would have a better handle on seating times and if not then would offer to bring appetizers to the kids at a minimum. When we finally got seated it took forever to get our meals and a number of the orders were wrong by the time they finally arrived. It was a bit frustrating because it is not inexpensive dining but the attitude by the wait staff was pretty lacking in concern and overall the establishment didn't seem to care about our wait or the mistakes in our orders. The food was good but if it weren't for the location and proximity to where we were staying I would not opt to go again. They need to step it up in terms of service.
We were staying at the Purgatory resort and this is the best dining close to the resort. The menu had a great variety. The specialty is beef however we had the salmon and it was very good as well. The salads, beet and spinach, were also very good. There restrarant wasn't busy the night we were there but we couldn't get reservations earlier in our stay so make reservations early. The service was also very good and the noise level was low so it was easy to have a conversation.
We overheard the bartender say two waiters had called in sick, leaving only one waitress for the whole place. We had reservations, but were seated 25 minutes late. After being seated we ordered drinks and our meals. My salad came out 30 minutes later, but not my wife’s or our drinks. After 10 more minutes I got up and found our waitress letting her know we were missing a salad. Five minutes later she brought out a salad, it was the wrong kind. My wife was scared to send it back. A total of one hour passed from ordering the meal before it was actually delivered. Our drinks finally arrived a few minutes after our meal. The food was very good, just not a good night on service. Waitress was nice, just overwhelmed. I suggest the hostess let guests know ahead of time when similar situations occur. A complimentary drink, appetizer, or dessert would have been a good way for the restaurant to say to the patrons “we are sorry about the inconvenience and want to try and make-up for it by giving you...!”
Service was so bad that we couldn’t enjoy the food (which was good). 40 minutes before we had the drinks and went on from there.
New Year's Eve. We had a 7:00 reservation and were seated at nearly 7:00 on the dot. It was 7:25 before we had water and drink orders taken, 8:00 when our salads arrived and 9:00 when our entrees were served. Way too long, especially as we watched others seated way after us getting served their food. We had to butter our bread with spoons as there were no knives on the table, and we had to ask for water refills.
We finally spoke to the manager and she comped our drinks and wine as an apology. We eat at the Sow's Ear several times a year, and this is the first time we've experienced something like this and we will not hold it against them.
All of that said, the food was amazing. The salads were fresh and inviting, and everyone enjoyed their entrees. We had steaks, salmon, and scallops and all were delicious.
I have dined at Sows Ear on numerous occasions. New Year's was a bit different from my normal experience. Guests were definitely partying and being a bit more rambunctious than usual. It was also quite crowded and I did have to wait to be seated past the time of my reservation, which is extremely unusual. Overall, the experience was still great. The food was delicious and the waitress was as attentive as she could be given her large number of assigned tables. I think things would have gone a bit more smoothly if they'd had an additional server on staff.
However, I would still wholeheartedly recommend Sows Ear to anyone and everyone visiting the Purgatory Resort area. The food is great, the drinks are generously poured and the service is generally phenomenal. Maybe just good to steer clear on holidays when they're super busy.
Food was delicious but expensive. Service did not match the quality of food.
Great job, as always!! We love the Sow’s Ear. Just a mile from our house at Purgatory, this is our favorite spot.

The steaks were awesome, per usual. We're very picky about our beef and its always awesome. I love the twist on the artichoke and spinach appetizer. The hot cookies and milk were the cherry on the cake. Always a great experience!
Good food and excellent service, aways a great place to enjoy a nice meal with fantastic views.
The food is excellent! Best steaks in the Durango area. Service is great and view is amazing. This is where we go to celebrate.
Food excellent. Steaks cooked to perfection. Upstairs great view in front of window but large noisy table next to us. Woman who seated us and poured our water very pleasant and professional. Our server seemed rushed and inattentive. Asked twice to have candle on table lit...never lit it. Rarely saw server after salad served. Husband had to go find her to pay the bill long after finishing entrees.
