The filet with the black peppercorns can't be beat.
Basically a good steak house. Fantastic views. Food very good. Romantic and cozy.
Service very poor. Hostess did nothing to smooth our bar wait before we were seated. (We had a reservation.)
My husband had to go to the bar to order a drink. As we were seated no one offered to carry our drinks to the table as we walked through the bar up a flight of stairs to our table. ( We are in our late 60's.) once seated, we waited for 20 minutes before being acknowledged. Had to ask for services from our very busy waiter that normally are quickly provided in a restaurant of this quality. Yes, we will go back, but will hope service is improved and that we arrived on an "off" night.
Absolutely wonderful spot for a wedding reception. Then enjoyed dinner the next day. The food is excellent and freshly prepared even for a large group. The staff was friendly yet professional. Great bar and the scenery is amazing.
Been there several times it has always been great food.
I was looking for a restaurant to meet friends who were staying at Purgatory. I don't understand why this place gets good reviews. The service was excellent. The food was mediocre at best. I had a good Caesar salad, but the sauce on the fish was overly rich, completely overwhelming the dish. I had to scrape it off. The pasta dish (ricotta & figs) was also too rich and sweet. Steak also reported to be so-so. I would not recommend this restaurant, and next time I will bring take-out or ask friends make the drive into Durango.
It was a Gem hidden in the Mountains of Purgatory, CO. We thought we would have to drive all the way into Durango to dine. Great location, view, food, service. It was a treat.
The food was outstanding. From the crab cakes to the salad to our steaks, everything was cooked perfectly. And so tasty. I am not a foody but this meal could make me one. The servers were attentive but not bothersome. It's a little pricey but worth it. And the view across the valley is enough to engross you during the luxurious meal.
Sow's Ear never disappoints. Crissy is the best and has been for a long time. Make sure you check it out while at Purg or Durango!
Great place, worthy of a return if you are in the area.Good selections. Fish ,Steak, vegetarian. The chef/owner knows what he is doing. Small efficient kitchen. Did someone mention chocolate chip cookies baked to order for dessert with vanilla ice cream chaser.
Wonderful food, excellent service by Savanna and nice atmosphere. Love this place!!
We moved to this area 11 years ago and stopped in at the Sow's Ear during the day. It was off season, they were closed, but they offered us some bagels to munch on. We were struck by the friendliness back then. It's taken us all this time to get back there. Boy! Was that a mistake! We've been missing a gem.
Our friends had a Salmon entree and a Caesar Salad with Salmon. My wife had Salmon in miso, and I had a blackened ribeye. All our meals were excellent. All four of us cleaned our plates.
The service was friendly and the setting is wonderful.
We wanted a good place to go before a concert at Music in the Mountains at Purgatory. The pickings are a little slim in the immediate area, but we had heard good things about this place, and they ended up being totally justified! The food was terrific. The "small plates" are amazing and just the right amount of food, especially if paired with one of the really good salads or the excellent soup! (It was southwestern style corn chowder the night we were there--just delicious!) The elk tenderloin was so tasty and cooked just right. Two of us also tried the small beef filet with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus. The filets were perfectly cooked and the accoutrements very good. The wine list was diverse and had some very good values on it. Views from the large windows are spectactular, and the decor is cozy and "mountain-y." We really enjoyed this place and most definitely will make it a regular pre-concert stop.
We have visited Sow's Ear about 6 times over the past 10 years and it is always fabulous! The Filet Au Poivre is to die for! Will return when we are in Durango again :-)
The food was excellent!! Great view and friendly service. Great spot for a special occasion.
Sows Ear and staff are always a good bet and a good time.
We have always looked to Sow's Ear as a good alternative to the summer crowds in Downtown Durango. This meal took it a step beyond. We have been disappointed recently by several in town eateries. Our meal last night at Sow's Ear was excellent and well paced. Our friends had the Duck Spring Rolls starter and were eating the remaining sauce with a spoon. My husband and I shared the yummy crab cakes. We followed that with the Salmon dish and fillets, all which did not disappoint. Alas, no room left for dessert.
Love this place. The view and ambiance are terrific. The food is locally sourced, fresh, and nicely presented. The service is friendly and informal. The prices are a bit steep, but so is everything in this area.
Specials every night are amazing!! Wine choice is superb. Wait staff is amazing, especially Chrissy! Highly recommended. And get the chocolate chip cookies and ice cream for dessert, you won't be disappointed!!
Most excellent from the food, service and view! Sow's Ear never disappoints!
Excellent as usual. Great restaurant away from the tourist scene in Durango.
