Sovana Bistro Ratings and Reviews
I took my husband here for his birthday and he couldn't have been more pleased! Our server made recommendations, which helped us make decisions. For example, instead of two separate and costly salads, she suggested that we split one, since we did want to share an appeetizer as well. She also allowed me to put red sauce on my ravioli, instead of the cream sauce it was supposed to come with, so I could have their delicioso meatballs. Then they brought a single pineapple upside down cake for hubby for his birthday, with a candle on the side. No singing, which is fine, but it was on the house and hubby felt very special. Thank you.
We were so impressed with Sovana - every course was incredible and freshly prepared. We foodies eat out often and only choose places that have been highly rated like this. We ordered the tuna tartare, and my 7 year old could not get enough of it. She would never consider eating this dish but it was so delicious she forgot it was raw. All the food was so fresh and the accompanying sauces and seasonings brought the food to new heights. I had never had such succulent veal or chicken in my life. This place is worth the drive.
Went with friends to celebrate birthdays - serving staff was very attentive (and patient with all of our special requests). Food spectacular - most of us were there for the first time and impressed with the unusual recipes and ingredients. Still thinking about the wonderful nutmeg flavor of the "warm spice" ice cream...
4 of us were traveling through the area and researched the listing on Open Table. We were all delighted with both our prix-fix meals (great options) and those that ordered off the menu. Wine and beer list was terrific, and the options to sample mushroom inspired dishes was delightful. Never thought of putting mushrooms with salmon, but it was a revelation and terrific. Fish and steak cooked to perfection. The service was outstanding, including thoughtful and careful directions to and from the restaurant. If only we lived nearby, we would all return again...and again. Next year, when we are passing through, it will become a favored ritual to visit Sovana again.
I have always enjoyed this place, but this time the service was so poor, I doubt I will return for some time, if at all. Totally ignored diet restrictions for my wife and had no clue about the bar menu. Had to send back one dinner and it was replaced with something worse.
An awful time.
Excellent food and excellent service. This was our first of hopefully many more meals at Sovana Bistro. The tuna tartare appetizer melted in your mouth - and it was a nice and surprising touch for the kitchen to "pre-split" it into two servings/dishes for sharing, without any sacrifice of portions. I thought it was two separate appetizers! My hanger steak was tender, tasty, and cooked to perfection. We also
appreciated the complimentary dessert for our anniversary. Can't wait to return.
The food was unbelievable. Delicious bread baked on-site - even the olive oil for dipping was unusually good. Brie and pear pizza was delicious. Server (Caitlin) was fast, friendly and spunky. Too cold for the patio but would like to try eating out there in milder weather. Can't wait to go back!
Dining at Sovana was wonderful as always. Service is prompt, attentive, and friendly. For starters we had apple salad and calamari. Both are a generous servings and items are well prepared. Calamari is crispy, never chewy with a nice aiola. We split a meatball pizza for the main course. Crispy thin crust fresh basil rich sauce. no dessert this time but the house glass of sauvignon blanc is crisp and clean.
We have been eating here since it was a little hole in the wall pizza place. The service this time was much worse that what we have become accustomed to. Our waiter was totally out to lunch. Specials were never described, one dish showed up without sauce, and doggie bags were lost. Perhaps it was just Valentines evening and not a trend, but we will think twice about returning for special occasions.
The food is always exceptionally inventive while still remaining classic; everything is incredibly fresh (using local ingredients whenever possible, very farm-to-table feel). The service never ceases to amaze me - our dinner was just a tad late (we didn't even notice) but our waiter apologized profusely and brought us free wine that he had specifically paired for our entrees. The ambiance is lovely (rustic, in a trendy way) and you can immediately tell that the place is incredibly well-run.
Sovana is, hands down, the best restaurant for miles around.
We've been dining here since it opened as a much smaller restaurant. Food has always been good. It's gotten even better over time.
The salads are the freshest I have ever tasted. And the wild boar bolognese is a hard-to-find culinary treat.
The only downside is the noise level which is always very high (a challenge to carry on a conversation across the table).
Sovana is one of my favorite restaurants. BUT the noise level was barely acceptable for our dinner. We had one of the earliest reservations (5:30), and within 20 minutes of being seated it was LOUD. We sat across from each other at a small table and could barely hear one other. But, of course, I could hear the couple next to us just fine. The food was great, as always. And the service was truly outstanding. We will go back because of the food, but I'm hoping they work out the acousitic issues soon!!!
The Hanger Steak with Burgundy Crema and Carmelized Onions was unctuous and everyone who didn't order it kept begging for another bite; the fish special and the Crispy Chicken were also well prepared and delicious; and the Apple Salad was served with paper thin, crispy dehydrated apples, and was very yummy. Don't miss the pan roasted mushrooms, chock full of meaty caramelized mushrooms. The food reached a new level of fabulous.
Food was creative, beautiful presentation, great service, nice ambiance. Only negative is corkage fee should be more prominent. It does appear on the menu, in very tiny print. I spoke to one of the waiters remarking on the restaurant being a BYOB even though they have a full liquor license and he said "they want to please their customers and give them options" but the $8.00 corkage fee was never brought up. Left the restaurant feeling a bit disappointed.
Enjoyed a nice meal as we have done before, albeit in somewhat crowded and noisy conditions. However, a $13 price for the salad special, featuring pomegranate seeds, greens and citrus slices, was out-of-line by at least $4-$5. This is Kennett, not Manhattan! Shame on me for not asking the price beforehand; shame on Sovana for pricing it that high!
From the staff member who opened the door to welcome us to Sovana, to our knowledgeable server, other wait staff who assisted to the front desk staff who thanked and wished us a pleasant evening, everyone was friendly and professional. The four of us enjoyed the comfortable cozy atmosphere. One word sums up the food and drink - bread, the chef's complimentary soup, the 5 flight cheese plate (we elected to have the chef select our cheeses) through our entrees and one shared dessert (selected by our server) - fabulous. We, and our friends, will return soon. One of our group lunched at Sovana recently and we're so happy she made this suggestion for our dinner last evening (before heading to a jazz concert at Longwood Gardens). Thank you!
Our favorite restaurant in the area and better than most of the places in center city Philly. Consistently excellent in every way -- food, service, ambiance and you can BYOB! Corkage fee of $8, however, is ridiculous. The crispy chicken is excellent. All the pasta dishes are extremely good and available in smaller portions. There are always outstanding nightly specials and there's a locally sourced menu. Warm butterscotch cake is to die for.
