SOUTHGATE Bar & Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Our South Gate experience was amazing. We loved the food, the ambiance and the service. The food was special--each dish was uniquely conceived and prepared and tasted delicious. The place had a comfortable, yet modern and dynamic environment. And the service was excellent. All of the wait staff, hostesses and the manager were extremely courteous and polite and gave us a lot of attention. When we arrived at 7pm, the restaurant was farily quiet. But when we left around 11, it was hopping with diners and a bar scene. We will definitely come back again
We wanted to try something different from our usual but still be close to Columbus Circle for our Jazz concert. The food was tasty and very nicely presented. The service was good. The fireplace in back was nice. I'm glad we tried it, but it didn't knock my socks off, so I'm just not sure I'd go back with so many other great places in the area.
Following a nice dinner at South Gate several months ago, I went back for brunch. I found nothing to object to, but nothing to praise either. At South Gate's prices, I had hoped for something more inventive, more unexpectedly toothsome, and less perfunctory. Because it's not inexpensive, South Gate for brunch is a disappointment.
Nice! A very pleasant place to have a business meal. The $24.95 prix fixe lunch is a good deal...just the right amount of food for a lunch meal. Atmosphere is modern and pleasing. If you're not paying, great....perhaps a little pricy if you are budget minded.
not as good as I thought/expected.
food was good enough.
fish with sausage was not something that excited us.
wine is something that I like to have on my table.
on the contrary wine serving must be perfect: have a frequent look at the table, put some wine in empty glasses after asking.
and it was not.
glasses often empty and filled with a (too) large amount of wine and in hurry give clients the impression that they want to sell wine and not to take care of the client.
Cuisine and presentation of food during the weekdays was excellent for lunch and also in the bar. Cocktails were well made.
Brunch, however, was disappointing and ordinary, and I did not like sitting in the back room. The front of restaurant is bright and elegant and the burning fireplace was so welcoming. Service staff are friendly and accommodating.
The food was cooked to perfection; We ordered the salmon and cod, and they came out perfectly cooked and very flavorful. Everything from the amuse buche to the dessert was delicious. We especially appreciated the excellent, yet affordable wine choices from their extensive wine cellar. We were greeted in person by the chef who personally came over to see how our dinner was!! Afterwards, we had a nightcap at the bar, and the lighting at the bar and the views of Central Park made the end of our evening magical.
The food was very good. We did the tasting
Menu which was a great choice The hamachi and halibut were standouts. The service was a bit slow and inconsistant which was suprisimg given it was a Saturday and not crowded.
We went for our anniversary and overall had a good time although the noise level was suprisingly loud even with a room about 1/3 full It does make a fine dining experience for a special occasion or romantic date less impressive
The food was good enough to overlook lack of the lack of ambiance and I would definitely recommend with caveats
The decor was very modern, soft swivel chairs, mirror shards/pieces on the wall, nice dark colored napkins.
We arrived a bit late for our reservation, but the restaurant was half empty so they had no trouble seating us. Warm bread and butter was brought out immediately. There is a nice $25 pre-fixe menu (although there are only two choices for apps. entrees, and desserts).
The food was good, but what really impressed me was that the head chef and the owner of the restaurant both stopped by our table after the meal (separately) and thanked us, and traded business cards. Great personal touch!
South Gate is really quite a lovely, affordable (ok that's a relative term)hotel resataurant with waiters who appear to be delighted to serve you, a computerized easy to use wine list with many wonderful choices and an Executive Chef that is not only drop dead gorgeous but clearly one that can manage a tasty, interesting, inviting menu!
The decor is modern, quite beautiful and the bar is terrific too!
WE WERE STUCK IN TRAFFIC AND WERE UNABLE TO MAKE OUR RESERVATION TIME. THE KITCHEN WAS CLOSED AT2 P.M. THE CHEF KEPT IT OPEN FOR US . WE ARRIVED TWENTY MINUTES LATE AND EVERYONE WAS GRACIOUS. WE WERE NOT RUSH. ALL WAS PERFECT. CAN'T WAIT TO GO BACK AGAIN. CERTAINLY ONE OF MY FAVORITES. IMAGINE A FIREPLACE BURNING IN THE MIDDLE OF SUMMER AND NO HEAT. SO PERFECT. RESTROOM WAS ALSO CLEAN LOVELY AND THANKS FOR THE MAGNIFYING MIRROR. KERRY IS THE GREATEST.
Given the location and the spare-little-expense interior design, South Gate has the potential to be a successful place. But it's invisible to all but hotel guests, with scant or no indication on the building that the place even exists. The menu is servicable if generic New American and it's fairly priced considering the location and surroundings (the wine list could use an infusion of under-$100 choices, however). Right now, though, the place clearly is struggling for an identity -- is it a serious restaurant, or a hotel restaurant that caters mainly to hotel guests? Successful hotel-based restaurants manage to establish a reputation that reaches beyond the hotel's visitors. South Gate needs to do that.
Our experience at South Gate was extremely enjoyable. The atmosphere is lovely - and the food was excellent. My wife loves lamb, and commented that her lamb chops may have been the best she's ever tasted! the only suggestion I'd make is that they lose the computerized wine list - it is difficult and time-consuming to navigate and took all the fun out of selecting a wine - "progress" is not necessarily a good thing.
Good wine cellar, good wine selection, but way overpriced wine list. The food was good but the service was sub par and the vibe is an overpriced tourist scene. They charge $6 for a glass of milk, which is a really classless way to make margins. Go for a drink in the bar scene, not for dinner.
This is our second time at the restaurant. The last time we were there the food was outstanding. It seems to have slipped a bit since then. Our appetizers were all very good but the two of us who ordered the halibut from the Restaurant Week menu were disappointed. It was rather bland. Desserts too, were only good, not great.
exceptionally nice service, good food, a handsome room though a cool one- mirrors and stone and tile, rather noisy. we were there for restaurnat week and there was no attitude (which we have gotten at some other high end restaurants) and the choices were many and they gave us a discount coupon to come back for lunch!
We went for dinner during Summer 2009 Restaurant Week and the menu was NOT the same as shown on their website. We went for the Mahi-Mahi and were instead presented with the choice of Halibut, Hanger Steak, and a Pasta entree.
The food was generally good and well-presented, but the portions were very, very small. For example, the Watermelon Salad appetizer only contained 2 pieces of watermelon and about 1/3 of a tomato drizzled in olive oil, and the Hanger Steak entree only contained 6 bite-sized pieces of steak. Not really enough to satisfy hungry diners, the fixed price Restaurant Week menu was really just a tasting menu.
Also, the atmosphere was very snobby. We found it offensive that the chef visited every other table than ours.
Service was quite poor. The restaurant was not very busy (on 7/20/09 around 7 pm), yet we had to wait a significant amount of time for each course. The staff also kept trying to take courses away before I was finished with them.
Food was quite good, but still not what I would consider 95th percentile. The watermelon parfait was crude and frankly disppointing. Not bad tasting, simply gauche, not prepared with the level of refinement of the prior courses.
Perfect location for business meeting. Quite and centrally located, easily accessible by both Eastside and Westside crowds.
From beginning to end, South Gate delivered. At first glance, the menu seemed limited (particularly for me-- I'm a vegetarian) and I was concerned about my lack of options. However, the summer tasting menu was fantastic. I had a tomato watermelon salad that was fresh and light, the Cavatelli pasta (which was perfectly portioned and absolutely delicious) and a dessert which was melt in your mouth yumminess. However, the real stand out for me was the service. My water glass never emptied, the wine they recommended complemented the meal perfectly, and the service was friendly yet unobtrusive. An excellent meal!
