SOUTHGATE Bar & Restaurant
Our waitress was fabulous. The food was wonderful. And, best, they allowed us to eat and enjoy at our own pace. Well done.
This is a diner pretending to be a glorified restaurant.
I invited a friend for breakfast at Southgate Restaurant. Result: Disappointment.
Ambiance is poor.
Food is OK.
Mens room: Please clean the floor under the urinals frequently.
On web for attire they state Business casual. My friend and I turned out to be the only men wearing jackets.
Interior setting: unfortunate. Forty years ago Essex House was a beautiful place. Now it is different.
Interior design and seating are less than elegant.
in short, J W Marriott needs better management.
Just terrible. How a place can be this bad in NYC is beyond me. Almost all tables were empty, yet it took an extremely long time to be seated. No one came over for order...the food was served in an odd order...no one seemed to be servicing our table. Fish stunk fishy....just terrible.
Average to below average food, terrible service (it was not busy, and there seemed to be plenty of staff), ridiculous prices. At that price point I’d expect a kitchen that takes at least some pride in the quality of ingredients. A $22 fruit plate should at least have fresh, ripe fruit, not unripe cantaloupe and honeydew and call it a day. And a $16 mimosa should be made with fresh squeezed orange juice, not Minute Maid. Disappointing enough to write a review.
Nice for a larger (10-12 person) group. Buffet is okay. Eggs benedict was very good.
Fantastic food, service was quick & waiter very personable. Even got some carrots for me to feed the horses at central park as I had forgotten mine. Definitely would go back!!
Good for “just in from LaGuardia”. Nice wine selection, short rib ragu good, just right spicy. JW Marriott-quality.
The food and the wine were awful. Service and ambiance were good. We were surprised since the restaurant is in the JW Marriot ESSEX House.
We were hungry but not starving. Sliders each and shared frites, and a bottle of wine was perfect.
Very cold, especially when door to outside opened. Order wrong 3 times, steak arrived well-done when ordered rare. No tableclothes, small table for 4 (we were a party of 5), and uncomfortable chairs. Restrooms scruffy. Very expensive, $500 including service for set lunch plus two glasses of wine each and coffee. Advertises ‘overlooking Central Park’, but on ground floor so more a view of traffic going by.
Personable and knowledge wait staff. A great neighborhood hangout . If you’re visiting I highly recommend it for a beautiful place to experience a bit of NYC.
Very limited menu. 10 oz hamburger is $29! Nicoise salad was quite good and $25...pricey but not outrageous like the burger which is far too large for most people. Noise from bar and music pipes in is loud and can hinder conversation. I don't recommend it unless you are trying to use the Marriott's egregious destination
fee $25 credit.
Salad with chicken and salmon - chicken was dry and tough...far overcooked - salad was fresh and not overly dressed - salmon was average - service was good and quick
Food was average, but service was woeful, and it was not busy at all. Dinner for four took two hours. Won't return.
A “go to” place!
An extremely overpriced bar food experience with a waiter with an attitude
The menu is so tired and completely uninspired. They haven’t changed it in years. That would be fine if the food on the limited menu was delicious, but it is only fair on a good day. And so, so overpriced! Marriott, wake the f-up, burn the menu and get an inspired chef. My company has been partnered with the Essex House for years and everyone I work with hates the place.
We were a group of 9 people. Everyone commented that Southgate was a good choice. I loved the sliders (made from filet mignon). We enjoyed sharing the truffle fries...no ketchup needed, just so good. Two in our group ordered the salmon and said very good. Delicious cocktails too. We're going back!
We went during Restaurant Week. The bruschetta was crunchy and mushroom flavorful. A little too much oil. The pasta was hand made and cooked al dente. I prefer it a little more cooked. The pappardelle and shrimp regular price is $32. It was good but not $32 worth for the portion. It had four large shrimps. It is located in a hotel so pricey. Quiet enough to have conversations.
It was okay food and drink but extremely overpriced. We paid $24 for an old-fashioned drink. We ate at The Renaissance lounge in Times Square the next day and the drinks were almost half the price.
Not fresh orange juice as described on the menu, coffee was below average and overall pricing high
It was good not great but good. Works well for guests of the Essex House. Open for breakfast lunch and dinner. They have a good buffet. My wife liked her Waffle. coffee and OJ are good. It also is good for business meetings.
Food was great. Ambiance was even better. Overall beautiful hotel and restaurant.
Great location, drinks and food on the park.....
Reasonably pruced by Manhattan standards
I love that this restaurant was in our building at Essex House. Our Server was excellent and the food and menu were great!
Loved it! It was beautiful and delicious!
Was not a memorable meal.
On a not busy Saturday we had trouble with the wait staff bringing water for all three of us at the table. Then never brought sweetener for tea. Food came out quickly and accurately.
Out of every restaurant in NY i chose to celebrate my 40th birthday in one of its most iconic buildings . I was not disappointed and even had a lovely little birthday surprise at the end of our meal Thank you so much for a lovely evening.
They had neither menu item that I requested. What I settled for was good but not outstanding.
Uninspired and pricey food that lacks flavor or distinction. Great ambiance--open, airy, welcoming. Too bad the food isn't up to its surroundings. Service was very good and attentive but there were not a lot of people in the restaurant so there would be no real excuse if it weren't.
Very friendly staff, great service. The food, especially the buffet, was excellent.
Tired, tired, tired. Could they spiff the place up a bit?
Lunch was too expensive for what we got.
Waiters were nice but inattentive.
Doubt I'll go back.
The table was dirty, server disappeared, had to get up to find someone to take the order
Very mediocre breakfast in an otherwise high end nice hotel.
Soup could have been hotter. Salmon, while tasty could have been hotter as well.
i ate at the bar during the women’s march
love love loved the bartender who served me!
Ambiance was wonderful. Food was fantastic. Service was nonexistent.
My family and I came into NYC for an overnight trupnas part of our Christmas gift to our kids. We stayed at JW Marriott and wanted to give the hotel restaurant a try. The restaurant is beautiful and has a great NYC vibe. The appetizers were great but unfortunately dinner was not. 3 out of the 4 of us ordered the steak. Sadly it was tough and grizzly. Extremely disappointing for the price.
Stopped in for a quick bite before a show -- food was better than average for a hotel.
