Inexcusably bad food (I’ve eaten better on an airplane), with sky high prices, and slow, inattentive service. It is clearly geared to business travelers on expense accounts or unwitting tourists. I did not feel as if they are hoping to have repeat customers and I will certainly not go back.
Preis-Leistungsverhältnis geht NICHT! Unbedingt dieses Restaurant meiden!
An Silvester nur Auswahl zwischen 3 Menüs (ohne Auskunft von Preisen). Als die Rechnung kam - 7 Personen für 1‘900$(inkl. Taxen und 300$ Tips!. Geschockt!
Terrible service. Food was overpriced and bland. A diner would have done a better job.
My husband and I and another couple ate at SOUTHGATE last evening. The service was painfully slow. Our waters were not quickly refilled and I had an ice tea that was not refilled at all. My friend had a Pepsi that also was not refilled at all. The soup I ordered arrived cold and I typically wouldn’t mention it was I was cold myself and looking forward to a warm bowl of soup. I asked the server to heat it and it took 10 minutes for him to return. My husband ordered a burger that was average at best but paid $25 for it. Overall NOT worth the prices and service was very slow.
Great! Clean, efficient, good food.
The brisket burger and the salmon were great. Very nice ambience and friendly staff. Will definitely go back.
We waited 20 mins. No waiter came to table. The brunch items were picked over and not in the least bit appetizing to look at. Some of the choices were empty The scrambled eggs were watery and looked fake. It was very expensive and the quality of the food was terrible.
The service was very slow. I had to ask for water and coffee after we had been seated for 20 minutes. I had to ask for menus. I had to tell them when we were ready to order. I had to ask for the bill. We were a group of 8 with reservations and I called ahead to let them know this was a business meeting.
Very expensive for the whole including service. A dinner for 4 for $ 1,000.
Decent food, but service was horrible! One of the worst service experiences I've ever had.
It was a perfect Thanksgiving celebration!
The food and service were excellent, we unfortunately were not able to eat inbthe actual restaurant as it was being used for a private event...all reservations were moved to a location within the hotel that didn't offer the same ambiance.
A beautiful venue and a great place to linger over brunch and catch up with friends.
I don’t usually write reviews, but I felt I needed to todau. I was very disappointed. The items were very overpriced for both the size and quality of the items. We ordered 2 apps 2 entrees and 1 side so feel comfortable that we tried a lot and nothing was good. I understand the location can charge a higher price but a $9.00 cappuccino and a $19 plate of 8 very average wings was a bit nuts.
Hard to talk with background music
Very expansive and the food and drink were not special enough to warrant the high prices
Really beautiful place nice food and wonderful enviroment
Un lindo lugar, bien ambientado y con rica comida. Pero el servicio fue muy malo.
A tremendous disappointment. One of the dining room walls is dominated by a giant, non-stop television broadcast that constantly sends a flickering light across the tables. The broadcast might appeal to those seated at the bar, but it is a ruinous distraction for anyone hoping for a gracious meal.
The food was delicious but our waiter was not attentive, in a hurry and knew very little about the wines on the menu. He disappeared for awhile and someone else brought us our check. Our enjoyment of the evening meal would have been much more positive and memorable had the wait staff been more attentive, considerate and customer focused.
Nice you can have a chat with colleagues and hear yourself think. Very good server. Food delicious. Happy team. Thank you SouthGate.
Terrific service in a lovely atmosphere. If you like people watching, a window front table is great, otherwise head to the back of the restaurant. Food was lovely, drinks were great, and server was top notch. I'd definitely recommend Southgate. They made our anniversary dinner truly wonderful!
I went with my wife because we had a very good experience four years ago. Now the food has minuscle portions (the lamb chops came with a single chop cut in half to pretend it had two units), wine list is not so good any more, ambience was like a sports bar. Never will come back again. And the restaurant cancelled my reservation, but we arrived late but arrived. And the restaurant was half empty.
Was ok
Not one of my favorites and I would not go back
Delicious, great service and nice view to Central Park
While staying at the JW Marriott Central Park decided to have lunch at the restaurant on-site - Southgate. I was seated immediately however it was 5-10 minutes before I was acknowledge once she seated me & it was only because I “flagged down a waiter”. The food was good during my leisurely lunch & I enjoyed the Central Park atmosphere. Once finished, the waiter did not clean my dishes from the table when I was finishing my wine even though it was apparent I was finished. Unfortunately I felt it necessary to reduce my tip to reflect the poor service.
we had a party of 10 and reserved in advance. The restaurant was not full , probably up 20% of it's capacity. Our waiter Ryan tried very hard , but he was servicing others at the same time. HE DID NOT HAVE ANY HELP . no busboys or any other assistance. No one helped him to clean the tables , remove empty bottles or dishes or to asked to serve another drink. Same silverware for several courses .
Our other friends ( 12 of them) joined us later and they were seating at the other table. Marcella was servicing them , but the same story. No help from anyone from the staff. Food , drinks and cleaning of the tables - all slow or non-existing.
Regardless, we spent over $3,000,000 and left 20% tip.
Again, waiters tried very hard, but the restaurant definately has managment issues.
I live on the block and visit restaurant/bar occasionally. Actually I am the owner of 2 restaurants and 2 Coffee Houses.

VERY expensive for just ok food. Drinks were over priced. Over $20 for an Old Fashion.
Our server, Marcella, was outstanding. Please thank her for us!
Such lovely service and good.
Excellent Service by the waitress. Really nice food. Can improve on selection of wine.
Excellent food and service a real neighborhood gem
Great place and great food for a hotel. Service is great and waiters are friendly and accommodating. I recommend!
Had to order breakfast at 1115. Very expensive. Waiter was very attentive but just not impressed with food and price .
Very beautiful, calm, good food and great wine list.
Miscommunication between kitchen and server. Got the cheese and charcuterie and had no idea what we were eating. Chicken cordon bleu sandwich was very dry with little flavor. Bolognese was okay. It was tasty but not what we expected. The restaurant was nice and service was quick but the food was lacking.
Our waitress was fabulous. The food was wonderful. And, best, they allowed us to eat and enjoy at our own pace. Well done.
This is a diner pretending to be a glorified restaurant.
I invited a friend for breakfast at Southgate Restaurant. Result: Disappointment.
Ambiance is poor.
Food is OK.
Mens room: Please clean the floor under the urinals frequently.
On web for attire they state Business casual. My friend and I turned out to be the only men wearing jackets.
Interior setting: unfortunate. Forty years ago Essex House was a beautiful place. Now it is different.
Interior design and seating are less than elegant.
in short, J W Marriott needs better management.
Just terrible. How a place can be this bad in NYC is beyond me. Almost all tables were empty, yet it took an extremely long time to be seated. No one came over for order...the food was served in an odd order...no one seemed to be servicing our table. Fish stunk fishy....just terrible.
Average to below average food, terrible service (it was not busy, and there seemed to be plenty of staff), ridiculous prices. At that price point I’d expect a kitchen that takes at least some pride in the quality of ingredients. A $22 fruit plate should at least have fresh, ripe fruit, not unripe cantaloupe and honeydew and call it a day. And a $16 mimosa should be made with fresh squeezed orange juice, not Minute Maid. Disappointing enough to write a review.
