Southern Inn Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We dinned in mid November and the appetizer of six fried oysters was disappointing...very small oysters (standards)... but they were presented well. The pork loin was excellent but the side of squash stuffed with "sausage" and sweet potato would have paired better (I thought) had they not substituted what I took to be chorizo for a mild, whole hog sausage. The "Perfect" Margarita was excellent but small and pricey for the venue (not a New York night club)....and other beverage options would have sold better had they been more reasonably priced. More Virginia wines should be offered, that's for sure, as some excellent local wineries did not have their signature wines on the list. Our server was excellent and obviously was an "old hand" there. All in all, a very pleasant dining experience but with room for improvement to match their prices.
Excellent fare, service and ambience. Sharp staff and management, on top of the game. Noise was o.k., I am a little hard of hearing and without active acoustic baffling, an older building will present challenges. A fine place to dine. My salmon and arugula was a 10 on a scale of 10.
This continues to be one of the very best restaurants in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The menu is as welcoming as the staff. It is such a nice spot to enjoy a meal, especially with friends that you would like to talk with over a delicious meal accompanied by excellent libations. Visit the Southern Inn the next time you are near Lexington, Virginia!
Service was great and food was delicious. Bartender was pleasantly knowledgeable of uncommon cocktails. Ambiance was wonderful for the occasion. My wife and I were in Lexington to celebrate her birthday and thoroughly enjoyed dinner at Southern Inn after a horseback ride to an area winery for a wine tasting.
Three of us were visiting Lexington to attend a VMI football game. We choose the Southern Inn based on online recommendations. Our lunch was delicious! We enjoyed the fried brussels sprouts, the lamb sliders, the fried chicken and their version of the Reuben. They have a fine beer and wine list, too.
The Southern Inn is a a must stop when we are in town. The only complaint I had with the last visit was our seating. We had a large part and were seated in the bar area. It was a cold night and people were going in and out of the bar.... Brrrrr! Food is consistently good.. Some things better than others. The duck was very good as was my fish. And dessert very good as well.
Have lived in Lexington for about 6 months now and just had the opportunity to try the Southern Inn when my family came in town. Reviews were good and have seen frequent guests here so thought I'd see what the hype was.
Service was good, overall atmosphere was nice but food was not up to par. For the record, my Wedge salad was tasty, however, it was not an actual wedge salad. They used Bibb lettuce instead, which in any sense is still a salad, but is not what is advertised. Also ordered the cream of mushroom soup which was grainy and bleak, not the best looking dish, and was filled with dry thyme stems that made it felt like you were eating bits of straw hay. We also ordered the calves liver which was very under-seasoned and tasteless. Disappointed that the hype didn't prove right.
Nice atmosphere. Great Food. I personally had the fried chicken which was very good; not greasy and very moist. The other diners had the meatloaf and pasta and both were well liked. The service was excellent. Prices were a bit high for the portions but overall very enjoyable.
We were driving through and stayed the night in Lexington. Lovely little city with a lot of good food choices. We had dinner here because of the great reviews. We had an excellent server who was knowledgeable about the food. The Brussels sprout appetizer was delicious! I had the fried chicken and mashed potatoes. The meal was OK. My husband had the meatloaf and he enjoyed it. The pecan pie was delicious as was the crème brulee. A nice dining experience.
Food was excellent! Especially the fried Brussel Sprouts (app) - definitely recommend that!! The quinoa salad was very good too and my husband had the lamb which he really enjoyed. A bit noisy (as we were by the bar) but overall worth it!! Would definitely go back!
My daughter attends Washington and Lee Law School and this was our first visit to Southern Inn. Delicious food, great service, and perfect small town ambiance. It was very crowded for a Monday night but luckily we made a reservation. I recommend trying it as you won't be disappointed. Get the southern fried chicken and pecan pie for dessert.
We went to Lexington VA for a weekend get away. Washintonian magazine recommended the Southern Inn as one of the best eateries in town. Upon checking into our hotel in the historic district, we asked the front desk woman for her suggestion for dinner. She immediately told us that the hotel highly recommended the Southern Inn. We made our reservation for the Southern Inn. Due to the fact that Lexington is a two college town; Washington Lee and Virginia Military Institute, and it was homecoming and parents weekend the Southern Inn was booked. Another indication of its popularity. We obtained a reservation for 8:45pm. We arrived at 8:15pm and were shown to the bar to await an available table. The restaurant was very busy. But even so, we were visited quickly by our server who took our cocktail order. By the time our drinks were ready we were seated at a nice table. We placed our appetizer orders of a beet salad for my date, and a clam and shollot stew for myself. Fresh bread and butter arrived a short time before our appetizers. We then placed our dinner orders. My date took the server's advice and had one of the house specialties, buttermilk battered boneless chicken breasts, with mashed potatoes and grilled mixed vegetables. I ordered the calves liver with sautéed onions, with the mashed potatoes and mixed grilled vegetables. The appetizers were the best we have had in quite a while. Neither of us could have said enough good things about our dinner choices as well. Pricing was middle of the road, but the food and service exceeded our expectations. Highly recommend the Southern Inn for dinner, or any meal for that matter. We'll be back.
We have been to this restaurant twice and both times have been phenomenal. The kind of place where the whole time you're eating you think "I can't believe how good this is." It is "close your eyes in bliss" kind of food. I will be coming back to this restaurant whenever I'm in town. YUM!
My husband & I had Sunday brunch with our son (W&L student) at Southern Inn yesterday. This restaurant is top-notch, always one of our favorites when we are in Lexington. Food is always amazing - for brunch, we enjoyed the Omelette, French Toast and Eggs Benedict - all were extremely good, including the tasty muffins they bring for starters. Service is always great, makes any meal feel like a special event. Come as you are - can be casual or dressy. Looking forward to our next visit to Lexington & Southern Inn!
Recently had my second visit to Southern Inn. We returned because we really enjoyed our first visit. Our waitress was wonderful! The fried brussel sprout appetizer was delicious as were the lamb sliders. The meatloaf was average, slightly overcooked on the outside and parts underdone (red) on the inside. The mashed potatoes were a little cold the mixed green veggies were GREAT! Also, great were the cider braised greens. We send back an order of spring rolls because they lacked flavor. I do not feel the low points of this meal represent an average visit. I would recommend the Southern Inn to friends and will be back again.
