Love this place when I am in Lexington visiting! Clearly best dining in town. Had the fried chicken which is not something I normally eat and it was excellent. Lamb sliders and duck breast were delicious. The service is always welcoming and accommodating. Can’t wait to visit again.
We recently dined on a Sunday night at the Southern Inn Restaurant. My wife had the salmon (regular menu item) and I had the scallops special entrée. Both were very good - actually the scallops were some of the best I have ever tasted. We also had 2 great desserts: carrot & cheesecake and southern pecan pie - the carrot & cheesecake was terrific. All-in-all we had a great meal and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Food was overspiced. Pork chop was so badly overdone we almost sent it back.
Service was excellent. Salad was excellent. Free champagne to celebrate was very generous.
The food and service was good. The cocktails and wines are overpriced.
Very disappointed, again. I have been going to the Southern Inn for almost 50 years. There have been some improvements (bar); but this is not the Southern Inn of old. My brother ordered their signature fried chicken because he remembered how wonderful it used to be. It is no longer worth ordering. It is simply an over-breaded, over-fried boneless chicken breast - tough and dry. I knew this based on my last visit, so I ordered the hamburger, medium. The burger came absolutely black - charred on the outside and dry and over-cooked on the inside. My grandson ordered the fish tacos; they were also a disappointment. They came full of veggies which we like; but there were two, small, sugar cube size pieces of fish, one in each taco. The noise from the bar was so loud that we couldn't hear each other talk. The only upside was the service - our server was wonderful.
Fantastic! The food was great! The cosmo was the best I’ve ever had! We WILL definitely come back!
Food was quite good. Greeting at the front door left a little something to be desired as we were a few minutes late for reservation. Then we had outstanding service throughout the dinner from Nancy — she’s both knowledgeable and fun!! Ask for her.
Delightful experience, great food and service!
Delicious food and fantastic, friendly service. Would visit again.
We have been going to Southern Inn for special family occasions for many years. Our experience in the past has been very positive. But this time it was a Tuesday in the early evening and it was SO full and noisy! The food wasn’t bad but not the best either. I ordered the pork loin and I’m used to eating pork fully cooked. I was confused when the waitress asked me how I wanted it. I told her “it’s pork.” But she kept insisting about temperature, medium, medium well. So I ended up getting a very thick peace of pork loin that was uncooked in the middle. My daughter and husband got steak knives for their steaks but I had to ask for one since my pork loin was too tough to cut with a regular table knife. My daughter asked for a medium-well steak and got a very bloody one. We took these home to cook some more. The sides were good, though. After dinner my dad asked if they sold espresso which they didn’t. He got black coffee then; but it was brought to him in a rush, no cream and sugar offered. He had to call the waitress back to get some and he got sugar packets and cream hastily served. He’s 82 and was displeased by the service he received. The noise level was such that we were unable to engage in across the table conversation with my parents who don’t hear well and are unable to speak very loud. There were other factors overall and it just wasn’t a great experience overall.
Strange menu for Easter. Very loud place. Strange objects in our iced tea...they graciously announced they would not charge us for the tea. The appetizers were good. The main course was an over toasted (burned) reuben sandwich. The carrot and ginger soup was cold. The bread was small. Not enough butter. Potato chips not salted.
I told the waitress I was finished with my soup...she looked at me and said "thats nice".
desert was good.
While traveling, spent one night in Lexington and returned to The Southern after having enjoyed lunches there on previous trips. Enjoyed the lunch experience more than the dinner. My husband's pork loin was overcooked. I ordered a magi special and it was fine, though a small portion for the price of $30.
Cocktails and fried oyster appetizers were very good. Would return for lunch, but go elsewhere for dinner.
Food and service was excellent. Had to order 2 Entrées and extra items in order to get enough to eat.
We have eaten here several times. The food as usual was very good and the service was great. I never order Meatloaf when I go out, but this was truly an exceptional menu item. Also don’t miss the pecan pie, with house made vanillin ice cream.
I am always surprised at the artful presentation.
We're regulars on a weekly basis and we are regulars for a reason. Southern Inn is always welcoming and offers consistently excellent food and service. Their cocktails are always honest and the food is a good blend of sophisticated Southern fare plus enough old standbys that anyone could walk in and enjoy an expertly prepared meal.
It was fabulous for a birthday celebration!! Stephen, our waiter, was wonderful!! We will happily return.
I'm a VMI grad and return to the Southern Inn often (went there as a cadet in the 80s). It remains my favorite restaurant in Lexington, thanks to creative cuisine and friendly service. Highly-recommended!
This is hands-down the best restaurant in Lexington, VA. Their menu is fresh, creative and consistently well-executed and their service is warm and top-notch. The cocktails and brunch (and brunch cocktails!) are divine. My dad dined there for years in his retirement years and they treated and looked after him like family. Highly recommend!
Service was fine, food was okay, portions were small. We visited on St Patrick’s Day and one of the specials was BangerS and Mash. My son received A Banger (one small, single sausage) and 4 tablespoons of mashed potatoes.
Great place to bring the whole family! We have been eating here for 21 years! Always good food
We live in Lexington, so we eat at the Southern Inn often. It's been our favorite for a while. The service is always excellent, as is the food. The dinner menu is a mix of favorites (the fried chicken is justly famous) plus an always changing selection of other choices. For example, we had a couple of really good entrees in honor of St Patrick's Day: corned beef with cabbage and bangers and mash, both simple stuff but elevated through careful, creative preparation to make them really tasty. Great cocktails and a good wine list with plenty of good options at moderate prices. Several beers on draft, plus a big selection of bottles. The desserts are all house-made and are really good. (The pecan pie is also famous.)
I like the Southern Inn and eat there often. My most recent experience was odd and a little disappointing. My wife and her friend both ordered fish tacos but when they came there was no fish in them. We called the waitress over and she apologized and took them back to the kitchen. They brought new ones back a while later that did have fish but not much. My wife suggested they offer her and her friend a free glass of wine which they did. Would have been nice if they had offered.
Yet another wonderful lunch at the finest restaurant in Lexington
Great dinner! Always enjoy The Southern Inn when in Lexington!
What impressed me the most was the friendliness of the staff... from the moment I entered the restaurant I was greeted with smiles and personnel that appreciated that I was entering their establishment. Add to that the great menu choices, flexibility in preparation of meals and reasonable prices and you just can't go wrong.
My wife and I will return and hopefully real soon. So glad we made the trip over the mountain from Bedford!
Great service & meal. Great homemade desserts.
Really one of the few good choices in Lexington. Service was great and food was OK. I ordered pork tenderloin, which had a great description, but it arrived overcooked and tough. Definitely a pork chop. My son had pasta with chicken and enjoyed it. I hear the fried chicken is amazing, but if you are more of a healthy eater, choices are limited.
Loved this place! Will make it a point to visit as often as possible.
Thanks for the wonderful meal and fantastic greeting and service!
First of all, open on a Monday. Menu limited but uniformly good. Wait staff attentive if a mite slow. Would visit again.
Always love the southern inn! Love the fried chicken and the staff are terrific too!
Very good and reliable restaurant that can handle a large group
We had a lovely lunch. Food was very good, creatively put together and very enjoyable. Service and ambiance made it a great experience.
Delicious food, prompt and courteous service, and fine table setting.
The food was great and the service was superb. The Restaurant is a jewel in Downtown Lexington, VA. A wonderful dining experience.
The food was excellent as well as the service! Our waitress was very accommodating to the elderly woman that was with us and we appreciate it greatly. The blackened chicken penne was one of the best pasta dishes i have ever eaten.
Best restaurant in town! I am repeat customer! and so are all my friends!
I know the restaurant must usually be a hit because it is so recommended, but we didn't have a great experience. The bread was a store bought baguette sliced very thinly - not warm. The butter was herbed and tasty. The mushroom soup on special was good - I had to add salt, but I don't hold that against people because most people are trying now not to salt their food very much. The spring rolls came with sesame seeds in them and plated on the sauce - I can't eat sesame seeds so it bothers me when they are featured on/in a dish, but not mentioned on the menu. Also they didn't have a very Asian flavor - red onion seemed not to go. I had the oysters with remoulade sauce - they were way undercooked and the remoulade was more like a moutarde sauce - very heavy on the mustard. The pan fried chicken special was good - nothing to write home about, but good. The pear salad was good. Our waitress was nice and helpful. The sweet tea was good. We were going to a school event after so we didn't have wine. I would try the place again and next time if not with company I would be more honest with waitress and send my undercooked oysters back. I think they would have made good on them if I had asked.
