Southern Inn Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
I know the restaurant must usually be a hit because it is so recommended, but we didn't have a great experience. The bread was a store bought baguette sliced very thinly - not warm. The butter was herbed and tasty. The mushroom soup on special was good - I had to add salt, but I don't hold that against people because most people are trying now not to salt their food very much. The spring rolls came with sesame seeds in them and plated on the sauce - I can't eat sesame seeds so it bothers me when they are featured on/in a dish, but not mentioned on the menu. Also they didn't have a very Asian flavor - red onion seemed not to go. I had the oysters with remoulade sauce - they were way undercooked and the remoulade was more like a moutarde sauce - very heavy on the mustard. The pan fried chicken special was good - nothing to write home about, but good. The pear salad was good. Our waitress was nice and helpful. The sweet tea was good. We were going to a school event after so we didn't have wine. I would try the place again and next time if not with company I would be more honest with waitress and send my undercooked oysters back. I think they would have made good on them if I had asked.
For two years this has been our VMI grandson's favorite place (and ours as well) My wife & I live 40" away but this destination is well-worth the travel time and we have never been disappointed in our dinners at S.I. We frequently recommend it to visitors and when our son visits from L.A., Southern Inn is his first choice for an excellent dining experience.
Lexington is fortunate to have this fine restaurant!
SORRY TO REPORT A LESS THAN ENJOYABLE DINNER. I ORDERED THE DUCK, WHICH APPEARED RAW ON A BED OF VEGETABLES. I SENT IT BACK TO COOK SOME MORE, BUT IT WAS RETURNED STILL UNDERCOOKED. I COULDN'T EAT IT. MY PARTNER ORDERED STEAK WHICH ALSO CAME UNDERCOOKED. HOWEVER, OUR COCKTAILS (BOURBON OLD FASHION AND CHAMPAGNE COCKTAIL WERE DELICIOUS). OUR WAITRESS WAS VERY EFFICIENT, ATTENTIVE AND FRIENDLY. SHE DESERVED THE TIP, BUT NOT THE RESTAURANT. SO DISAPPOINTING, AS THIS RESTAURANT WAS ALWAYS OUR FAVORITE WHEN VISITING LEXINGTON. I'M WONDERING IF A NEW COOK HAD BEEN HIRED FOR THE EVENING. IN ANY EVENT, WE WILL NOT BE RETURNING.
We come to Lexington in January and February for a agility trials at the horse center. One evening we have dinner at The Southern and the other at Bistro on Main,; we love them both so don't ask us to choose. The food is great as is the service and prices are reasonable. Having specials each night gives us a variety of something new to try. The breads are always great as we wait for drinks and starters.
Southern Inn has a cozy, yet sophisticated feel. The decor is a bit dated, but charming nonetheless. The food and cocktails are fantastic overall, but don't all quite live up to their pricing, which seems a bit steep for certain items. We went on a holiday, which meant the restaurant was at full capacity. It was very loud, but still enjoyable. The staff seemed a tad stressed, but focused and were courteous to the patrons. I would absolutely recommend it to a friend and I would absolutely go again.
We've eaten at the Southern Inn many times & the food/service has been consistently very good. I had the chicken penne pasta and my wife had one of the evening's specials: gnocchi with shrimp. Both were excellent, but the highlight of the meal was probably the dessert apple blondie (which incorporated both fresh & cooked apples) with vanilla ice cream topped with granola. Our cocktails were also well prepared. Service was prompt & attentive. Always a good place to eat when in Lexington.
The special libations were top notch. The dinners chicken and penne was delicious and the pork loin was tender and delightfully paired with kale, risotto and strawberry. The apricot bread pudding was the icing on the meal. I can’t say enough about the quality of the meal, service and cleanliness of this restaurant. When we return to Lexington we will be back to the Southern Inn
Very good food - appetizer options especially. An excellent list of beers. Some nice wines as well but not many single glass options. Pork loin, steak and chicken dishes were good with nice sides. Not a place for vegetarians.
One suggestion for cold nights - have customers come in main entrance, not in bar entrance where do many seated diners are subjected to cold blasts of air.
The southern fried chicken is excellent and a house specialty. The homemade ice cream was excellent. I ordered vanilla, which is the world's most popular flavor, but for more adventurous types, they have other flavors. Made on site each day. We were seated in the bar section, which was a little noisy. However, I am glad we were seated there rather than the front part of the restaurant, which was chilly. Meatloaf was also very good.
Southern Inn is the most reliable, busy restaurant in Lexington. I always enjoy my dinner when I dine here. This visit my husband ordered the tuna but it was being served with polenta. They readily agreed to substitute the mashed potatoes. I ordered salmon but preferred to have grilled polenta rather than the beet risotto. Our waiter assured us that those substitutions were fine. My salmon with polenta was excellent as was my husband's rare tuna with mash. Our daughter ordered the most standard of all their fare the fried chicken with mash and vegetables. That is always delicious. My only disappointment was the tossed salad with not very good tomatoes. I know that it is difficult to always have good tomatoes in November, but the salad would have been better without them than what they served. Nonetheless, our dinners were fabulous and I highly recommend the Southern Inn.
We have visited the Southern Inn several times and we always have a great experience. The wait staff is very good and the food is high quality and well prepared. This year we were celebrating our anniversary and the Southern Inn made it special. They gave us each a glass of complementary champagne and seated us in a quiet corner. These extra efforts set this restaurant apart from many others and we appreciated their thoughtfulness. Every time we visit Lexington the Southern Inn is always included in our plans. We have never been disappointed.
We dinned in mid November and the appetizer of six fried oysters was disappointing...very small oysters (standards)... but they were presented well. The pork loin was excellent but the side of squash stuffed with "sausage" and sweet potato would have paired better (I thought) had they not substituted what I took to be chorizo for a mild, whole hog sausage. The "Perfect" Margarita was excellent but small and pricey for the venue (not a New York night club)....and other beverage options would have sold better had they been more reasonably priced. More Virginia wines should be offered, that's for sure, as some excellent local wineries did not have their signature wines on the list. Our server was excellent and obviously was an "old hand" there. All in all, a very pleasant dining experience but with room for improvement to match their prices.
Excellent fare, service and ambience. Sharp staff and management, on top of the game. Noise was o.k., I am a little hard of hearing and without active acoustic baffling, an older building will present challenges. A fine place to dine. My salmon and arugula was a 10 on a scale of 10.
This continues to be one of the very best restaurants in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The menu is as welcoming as the staff. It is such a nice spot to enjoy a meal, especially with friends that you would like to talk with over a delicious meal accompanied by excellent libations. Visit the Southern Inn the next time you are near Lexington, Virginia!
