I surprised my fiancé for his birthday to go there and it was our first time. I had told the restaurant through open table that it was his birthday and they sat us on a candle lit table near the window for a view of the water. Our waiter Ferrat made us feel so special and was very attentive but not overly. We really had a good time and was more than what we expected. Thank you so much!!!
not my first time... but each and every time, I bring a friend from another boro across the bridge to see our lovely boardwalk and our beautiful view of Brooklyn and the Ocean. it was too chilly to walk, but the food was as usual.. delicious maple crusted salmon.. calamari grilled to perfection, and kale salad that was great.
an attentive waiter. good seating.. another impressed non Staten Islander..
The people next to us had 3 screaming children and were dresses in dirt undershirts. Missing staff and service was the worst. Maybe a dress code .. like clothes
Worst restaurant experience I've ever had. It was the worst wait service I've ever experienced in a restaurant. From taking almost an hour to ask us if we wanted a drink after we sat down, to bringing our dinner entrees while the appetizer dishes were still on the table, forgetting an appetizer, after we complained and they gave us a free round bringing the wrong drink, I could go on as this wasn't all that happened. An absolute disgrace
The chef and his supplier must have changed since last mid-summer! The food is more like gussied up fast food than quality or originality. Used to be great food; not anymore.
I was here about two weeks ago and the service was just awful. We were a party of four so you would expect it to be manageable for the wait staff especially considering that the dining room was basically empty. Our appetizers were all served at different times and shortly after the appetizers were served salads were brought out leaving no room on the table. When we commented to the waitress about this she simply shrugged and said that's how the kitchen prepared it. Their solution to make room on the table was to remove all the bread dishes but they left the basket of bread. Holding my bread in my hand because I didn't have a dish, I asked the busboy for some butter and he returned to the table with wrapped pats of butter in his hand and simply threw them on the table. Because we were all eating at different times our plates were cleared at different times so when the last of the appetizers was finished we waited so long for the plate to be cleared that we couldn't take it anymore and decided to clear it ourselves and put the dirty plate on the table next to us where it sat until after our entrées were served. Our entrées were also all served at different times and my friend actually had to ask the busboy to clear her dinner plate because no one came around after she finally finished her meal to clear her place setting. When it came time for dessert, we were offered coffee but never offered refills and our dessert menus all had different selections and several were unavailable that evening . If this was a restaurant that had $15 entrées you could maybe excuse the poor service, however, at this price point my expectation is that the service should be much, much better than what it was. Unfortunately I'm crossing this one off the list and will not be returning.
Food was mostly wonderful. The sevice was excellent, friendly and accomodating. The atmosphere is so pleasant as it overlooks the ocean and bridge. Woukd highly recommend.
Great food nice selection & nice size portions
Very pretty place & nice view inside or outside
They have a pre-fix menu Mon-Fri
Till 7pm
Great for the price
Beautiful restaurant with great water views. Good food and service.
You Gotta Be Kidding:
Had a 5:15 reservation. Arrived on time. Told it would be 10 minutes while they clean up some tables. 35 minutes later we were shown to a table. There were at least 6 other empty tables. Bus boy came over filled our water glasses and that was our last contact with staff for another 30 mins. We didn't even see anyone to complain to! No one was served during that time. One table had bread. We left! Horribly managed and under staffed. This isn't the first time we've been disappointed with the service... but it will be the last.
The night started with the Maitre he was able to accommodate us to an outside dining experience which had a great out door band playing. Indoor was nice atmosphere was romantic but just a little cold A/C excellent. The food and drinks was excellent. Our waiter Ferat was excellent and explain all the dishes to our table. I would definitely go back again.
Service was awful! Food came out after a long wait and was not what the menu stated. Texas toast was english muffins, no holandaise on the eggs, no home fries, and polenta was like awful gritty cornmeal. Was looking forward to this restaurant because I heard good things about it. It was the worst dining experience I've had in my life.
Very disappointing. Pretty view but not worth eating there. Even the busboys are not trained. Two different busboys stacked dishes on the table in front of the diner. Service was very slow and the food was average at best. Better off going there for a drink and enjoy the view but go somewhere else to eat.
Food was lousy. Portions were small. Waited a very very long time for our food. I would not recommend South Fin Grill to anybody. They need to improve FOOD, PORTIONS AND SERVICE.
My first date with my girlfriend was at South Fin and that was 4 years ago. Now we come back on our anniversary date every year. Food, service and the ocean view is great.
Nice place located directly on the boardwalk of Staten Island. There is an outdoor deck that was more casual. We ate inside because it was a humid night. Limited menu but the food was prepared as requested & the waiter was on point. Mt date requested a drink that wasn't too sweet & not only did he make a great suggestion but had the bartender make it to her specs. We only had a salad & angus sliders but both were excellent. With two drinks and a bottle of sparkling water the bill was under $50. I will definitely be back.
This restaurant was just okay. Food was nothing to rave about. One of our meals took longer than others but a drink was comp. The only thing that was good was the ambiance.
Four of us got a very bad experience at South grill restaurant. First of all, we booked 10:30 for Sunday bunch and arrived on time. We were their first guesses for the day. However, we have to wait for 20 minutes until the table was ready. We got a nice view to the beach and ocean which was the only good thing for the bunch. The waitress was not good at all. When we question she do the restaurants has a regular breakfast menu other than the bunch menu, she had to ask the manager. We have to wait and remind she several time to change the uncleared tableware, she didn't come and take our orders until we asked other waiter. Then, the waiter to sent she back. We also had to wait the food for long time and it is just ok. Finally the manager find out something and bought us a special tea bag and stop by several times to say hello. We won't come back and will share my real bad experiences to my friends.
Overall a nice, positive experience. Food was fresh and tasty. Food took a while, quiet atmosphere. Service was prompt and attentive! Views were wonderful. Great lunch meal. Dessert was fantastic.
The food was mediocre, and the staff, though efficient and courteous, knew nothing about restaurant week or Open Table. Still, I might returnrfor the water and bridge view.
Horrible service. The manager did not seem to care. The bus boy was lackadaisical and I had to ask several times for the plates on my table to be taken away. This place used to be much better but has gone down hill.
The grill must of been to hot everything we got was burnt.
My husband, my son and I decided to go out for a special lunch. We decided to go to the South Fin Grill mainly because two of us love seafood and the other one loves beef. The food was delicious. Two of us had the lobster club and my husband had the angus sliders. For appetizers we had mussels, new england clam chowder and crab cake. The food was really delicious. Just the ambiance of the restaurant and sitting near the water made us think we were on vacation. It was such a nice relaxing time for us. No problem waiting for food to be brought to us. Waitresses brought food right out. We had such a good time and we will be back.
Anniversary
I have come to the grill since the grand opening. We have celebrated weddings and special occasions. This summer the food and service went down hill. While leaving the staff kept offering us drinks but wouldn't except that my wife who's pregnant couldn't drink. One of the managers mentioned they are trying something different. From previous reviews the plan isn't working. The day we went the maitrede wouldn't stop saying it was our anniversary even though it wasn't. The waiter never came to check on us. The maitrede was slamming drinks and upset with the staff in front of us. We ran out of drinks and the food was not worth the price. $32 for 4oz of a flank streak with no flavor and over cooked. We could have made a better meal at home. The shrimp was only cooked on one side and the pasta was soaked in half a bowl of oil. I had to wait for the maitrede to bring water, a new drink, and cheese because none of the waiters were around. I had to return an old fashion because it was missing the sugar and bitters. Come one, your the only restaurant in NYC on the boardwalk with a beautiful location and decor. The food and drinks should match the ambience. If your considering this restaurant go to the marina cafe instead. In the end the both of us felt sick. Good luck.
Nice location. Outdoor seating. Tuna entrée was very poor quality and prepared badly. My wife had to send it back - a very rare occurrence. They replaced it with salmon entrée - no questions asked. Salmon was better. Pork cutlet Milanese was dry and over cooked - I ate most of it anyway. Server was untrained in wine service.
The restaurant is nice. The location is nice. They could be doing much better.
Beautiful view, great music and food was good
Server mixed up our orders.
I was not a big fan of the food and the waiter was inattentive. The outside bar scene was rowdy and it was expensive with a very limited menu.
Went to celebrate a friends birthday here. The location is great and the restaurant is beautiful! A really nice view of the water and literally a step from the pier where you can walk. The entree itself was great! Barramundi fish was seasoned and excellent. The side of "risotto" was more so moist rice but still seasoned well! I would pass on sushi, I was eager to try it but was disappointed but then again I should habe known not to get sushi from a place that doesn't specialize in that. Drinks were meh, honestly didn't feel ant were worth the price and I sampled a few different ones from our friends. The service was the main drawback.... they were very nice but we got 3 different stories of when the kitchen closed, at one point told we cant even order because its too late and the "chefs all left for the night" which turned out to be false.... Then were told we didn't all pay the bill even though all our receipts were signed and handed back..... sigh. It was the black cloud over the experience
I've been loving the Fin for years. The food never disappoints. The views, live music, people watching, and vibe... just right! Highly recommended.
Service personnel seemed rushed even though there was ample staffing
I have been to South Fin many times over the years. I don't know what happened to the staff & food presentation. Our visit on Saturday was a terrible experience & I will never go back.
Appetizers were not served to each person at same time. One appetizer was wrong and had to substitute another due to kitchen ran out of shrimp.
Entries were too long in serving.
Had to ask for water
I don't know if they were having a bad night, or there's some horribly wrong. I hope it's not the latter. I went there 6/21/17 after a day at the beach to have dinner. I arrived at 6:45 pm. We were seated outside so that we could watch the fireworks that evening. After getting the menu and ordering our drinks, when it came time to order our food, two out of the three things I wanted to order were not available. It was surprising to hear there since it was so early in the evening. Also one of the dishes that my dining companions wanted was not available either. I completely change my order, and he substituted the fish on his order. The appetizer we ordered were very easy to prepare because they were raw dishes. For some reason we waited over an hour and 15 minutes to get our appetizers. I must say the appetizers were delicious. Although the raw seafood platter had no cocktail sauce or lemons and we had to wait another five minutes. After we finished our appetizers, we had to wait another hour and a half to get our entrées. Once we got our entrées I must say I was underwhelmed. My mashed potatoes were definitely incident, my dining companions tuna was over cook, and my other dining companion sticky rice was really minute rice. To top it all off, the fireworks was awful and they had to stop because of a malfunction that was shooting fireworks into the crowd.
I hope they improve on this place because it does drawer a great crowd and I know summertime is their big moneymaking time
I do want to add, the staff and manager where very apologetic and I do appreciate that.
Celebrated Father's Day by going to the Sunday Brunch. It was terrible. Aside from the omelet which was made fresh and tasted very good, the rest of the food looked and tasted like it was sitting out for hours or possibly left over from an event the night before. Waitstaff however was very friendly and the view was very nice. But for 120 bucks for 4 ppl it was a waste of money. Will not go back there for brunch again
Terrible service.. asked for oysters.. waiter came back 45 min later with clams.. absolutely bad experience..
The restaurant provides great atmosphere; however, I thought the menu was limited. Requested a change to how the order is prepared - would not accomodate.
Wife's meal came out at the same time as mine (salmon) and she liked it (so this review is biased towards my experience). I ordered the Filet Mignon, ($37) medium, it came out and seemed a bit small for $37 but I'm from out of town so I don't have a comparison here. I cut into it and it was well done, (I'm a picky eater long story short) so I was kinda trying to force my way through it and the waitress came over and asked if everything was ok, she could tell I wasn't happy and asked if I wanted it remade. They took it and made me a new steak, I got it cut into it and it looked more "medium" in the middle, but was kinda weird texture, my wife commented it looked like the outside of the steak was well done, and the middle was rare. The steak was tough and seemed to align with that analysis. I can't speak to the other food (as I said my wife said hers was good) but after spending that much money on a steak I figured it would be prepared correctly. We skipped out on dessert.
The ambiance and the service was great, however the food was not as good as we expected it to be.
The Zappa di pesce was small and they charge $2 for a few spaghetti with it. So you're paying about $35 for a small seafood dish. The salmon was dry and it came with a burnt spinach Fillo puff. The waiter knew it was burnt and just made a face and left. The fried calamari and salad was good. Not worth the quality of the food Next time I would go for dessert or appetizers and drinks only.
