Amazing food! We Have to go back to try the other items on the menu.
Lovely restaurant! Delicious and inventive food - in particular, the cod was exceptional.
Great place in downtown New Canaan. Food was great and well presented. Healthy portions and a good wine and beer list. I'd go back next time we are in the area.
This restaurant would increase its star rating if it could so something about hard surfaces which increase noise level. We were seated at way back and still were aware of high decibel level.
Food was good- interesting menu, but the din was really distrcating from the good things. They could make it a lot more like a restaurant than a bar- with some soft decorating touches.
$76 (before tip) for two mediocre egg and sausage sandwiches, one so-so omelet, one bloody mary and a cup of coffee is definitely a sign of a restaurant that is a little full of itself. Terrible value for what it was. Will twice before returning.
Took a ride to New Cannan to look at the foliage and had a very enjoyable lunch at South End. We chose from many options on the Brunch menu and were very pleased with our choices. The wild mushroom, spinach and cheese omelet and the BLT sandwich were nicely presented and delicious. After being well fed we strolled the village with it's many shops and boutiques.
Wine list is pricey Service was good. Dont like that we had to order entire meal together right up front
Amazing!!! Gifted chef/owner!! Amazing Management!!! One of our favorites!!!!
One of the best restaurants around the New Canaan/ Darien area. We go often because we appreciate both the quality of the food and the wine and beer selection. Overall an excellent experience and one of our go to places.
Seriously the best food in CT. Every time I come I fall more and more in love!
Food was good. Place was way too loud, it was not full of people. Service people stood right behind table, hovering, if return to restaurant would request different table.
Great place. Great service and food.
Our overall experience at South End couldn't have been better. The wait staff was extremely attentive and polite. Our meals of baked chicken and bolognese were delicious and we were given generous portions. The hot milk accompanying our coffee was a nice touch.
I had lunch here with my two children, and we were a little pressed for time. Service was rapid, food was good, the bar looked great and I plan to go back for a more leisurely meal - with a cocktail!
This is our first visit to this place. The cocktail menu is very creative and the ones we tried were very good. My husband ordered the pork chop and it was absolutely delicious and tender, cooked perfectly. I ordered the chowder style cod and I loved it. The fish was seated beautifully and cooked to perfection and the chowder was rich and delicious. I leave the appetizer feedback for last because we ordered the tuna and it did taste like it was previously frozen and not so fresh and overwhelmed with soy sauce but do not let this stop you from going to this place for dinner. The waitress was attentive. Their bread is to die for too.
I found SE on Open Table and decided to try someplace new. What a great decision! My wife and I found SE to be amazingly good. The decor is really nice but tends to be a tiny bit noisy. OK, that's all for the negatives. The positives are EVERYTHING else. The service was outstanding, the wine list while limited had a nice selection in every price range. We had a terrific Barolo for about $84.00, worth every penny. We had mixed meats and cheeses as well as the meatballs for apps, all were delicious. My wife had a Cod special that was fantastic and I had home made Tagliatelle with a mixed meat ragu that was superb and too large to finish. There are a ton of other selections on the menu that sound amazing, choosing what to eat was a delightful chore. The finally was the skillet made chocolate chip cookie with vanilla ice cream! This is a place not to be missed. I'll surely be back!
South End is our new "go to" local restaurant. The food is creative, fresh and delicious. They make a wonderful sour dough table bread and all their own pastas. Each of our courses was served well and tasted delicious. We especially loved the artichoke appetizer.
All of the four of us were happy with our main course and desserts. The wait staff was informed, helpful, attentive and all around well trained.
We look forward to returning soon.
An attrative, local restaurant with creative food offerings. Casual and family friendly.
Excellent neighborhood restaurant. Food and people are always really good. Bartender knows how to mix a drink and tap beer options are nice addition.
Food is always well-prepared and presented and is of the highest quality. Nice to have in New Canaan. Drinks are also interesting and well prepared.
The menu had a wide variety of choices. I'm lactose free and gluten free and there was plenty to choose from.
Heirloom tomato caprese was fabulous.
Consistently a great experience. Very attentive.
I met a friend at South End with two of my grandchildren in tow and we all had a great meal. From the salads to the seafood, and the kids dishes, we ate heartily. Portions were good-size, service was exemplary. We sat in a spacious booth and had homemade bread before our entrees. Intriguing presentation of the salad appetizers. The two youngsters shared the meatball appetizer. I'd definitely go back!
It is my go to place. Nick and his crew are outstanding!!
Great food at a premium price in a hip setting but SUPER NOISY. Could barely hear each other.
Management went above and beyond on a miscommunication on a dish mixup. This place is classy and they actually care tremendously about their patrons. Bravo! Delicious food and wonderful service.
Live music playing and the food and service was great!
I found this restaurant listed on a Top Ten list for foodies. None of the four of us had been there before and we all loved it. It was a perfect evening, so we opted to take advantage and were seated outside. (Supposedly, it can get noisy inside, but I wouldn't know.) The bread is exceptionally good. For starters, none of us could agree which was best between the tuna poke, the beet salad and the burrata BLT. For mains, we had the meatballs, the chicken, the ravioli and the cod. Everyone raved about theirs. I had the "chowder style" cod, and could not have been happier with my choice. We ordered two desserts: chocolate cake with mint ice cream and the skillet cookie. The cake was good and the cookie was even better. Our servers were charming and attentive, but never made us feel hurried. A great dining experience all the way around.
I love the ambience of the restaurant, and the selections on the menu is very good. Only problem is we found that the food tasted too salty. It’s fairly easy to get a reservation, wish I could like to place more but there’s something about the saltiness of the food that just was not enjoyable.
Fresh summer items on menu. Excellent chilled pea soup with crabmeat.
Have eaten there 3 times - one time was average food, second was very good and most recently great food. We had a 8:45 pm reservation, and I felt pressured by the wait staff to get our orders in -- especially when we were enjoying a bottle of wine.
I came here after hearing about it many times from friends and family. I was seated immediately upon arriving and was given a spacious booth. Our waiter was very knowledgable and attentive offering recommendations and opinions on each things we considered ordering (which helped narrow down our decisions). I shared some appetizers and got wine as well and it was all lovely. I HIGHLY recommend the tuna tartare dish. It was unbelievable and it had my mother and I tempted to order seconds...and thirds... Even the complimentary bread basket was delicious! My entree came shortly after and was great too and the cookie pan dessert was amazing as well. That was devoured in seconds. Great food, on the higher end for cost when you add on alcohol and assortments of food. Overall a great experience. Will definitely be back.
We are repeat diners. Food is always really good. Place is great for casual evening with family or friends. Place just works!
Excellent food and attentive service, but noisy. However, the food is worth the noisy atmosphere.
Terrific service. Great food. Will always return. Local gem.
Always fun and delicious!
After reading various reviews of South End I had high expectations for our dinner visit. One aspect not anticipated was the complete lack of acoustical treatment, making this packed scene almost too loud to have a normal conversation. Despite the completely full restaurant we were seated promptly at our reservation time which was a nice surprise.
Our server appeared with menus and stated that he'd be "right back". This was the first of many empty promises and unfortunately set the tone for the evening. We are not finicky, demanding "all about me" customers, in fact we have been told many times what pleasant and enjoyable customers we are. The issue with this server - he simply took no genuine interest in his job other than once. Otherwise, he would walk away in the middle of us asking him about the menu ("I'll be right back"), he'd stand by the order table for long stretches and make no effort to attend to any of his tables, etc. There were plenty of servers, bussers, etc so it wasn't that he was overwhelmed.
The food was very good - perfectly seasoned and cooked. Our dishes have been reviewed by others. The wine list, though fairly smal, had excellent and not frequently found, choices. Kudos to whomever chose the list as it marries well with the eclectic array of food offerings. Despite the service failure we look forward to a return visit - there are so many wonderful sounding offerings to explore!
I made, and confirmed, a reservation for Sunday evening. The server refused to seat my friend until I arrived, but once I was there, he seated four other parties before us. After standing around for 20 minutes after our reservation time, we asked again to be seated and he was short with us. At the table we waited another 20 minutes before anyone came to take our drinks order. After that the service was sloppy and rushed. I have eaten at South End many times and never before had a bad experience, but I would not go on a Sunday evening again.
We've been many times and have been disappointed the last few. The food is not as good as it used to be. Last nights meal lacked seasoning, and the salmon dish was changed for the worse (i loved the lentil salad it used to come with and the broth it has now was so-so). Still great for families, fun bar and drink menu, great atmosphere.
