Happy Mother's Day

A former NYTimes food critic was asked about favorite local restaurants and she said, "South End, of course." Given that comment we had to try it! We were 4 diners one of which was a former 2 star chef and all loved the creative, fresh, perfectly prepare entrees. We will be back, of course!
Food was delicious with a very nice and varied menu. The donut dessert was the best I’ve had in a very long time - capped off a wonderful meal. It’s a perfect place for dinner with friends and also to take your spouse for a date. We will come back and soon!
My wife and I love South End. Waiters are courteous and attentive. The food and the wine list are great. Always love the daily specials and the day’s variation on sangria. The roasted chicken is a favorite of mine but you can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. We will be back soon.
Wasn't our server's fault. He was nice but I don't like to be told when we want to order appetizers and look at menu for our main dish that we can't and that we have to order everything together. We had only been sitting down for 10 minutes when we were told we had to order appetizer and entree. We were done with everything within an hour and 10 minutes and out the door. $225 for brunch for 4 of us isn't too expensive unless it's rushed. Then it feels very expensive. Food was pretty good but we likely won't be back.
Everyone was very nice and helpful. Great menu.
Great Monday night special - SE Burger and Bordeux.
Love the place. Kind of noise for me.
Service was friendly and attentive. Food was creative and delicious! Lively but not too loud to enjoy conversation with our friends.
The menu was a bit uninspired and boring. I wish there were more small plates/apps to try. It was hard to decide on an entree because none were really that appealing. If you aren't very adventurous, the menu is for you! However, I loved the decor/ambiance and drinks!
We had a reservation for 7:15 on a Saturday night and were seated punctually. It is a quite loud and dim dining area so I wouldn't suggest going if you intend to have a meaningful conversation. Our food was fine (read- unremarkable, not bad, just fine) with the skillet cookie being the strongest offering. The fried baby artichokes were unusual compared to the previous preparation- they were not quite fried and not quite in the form of an artichoke. Just shredded up oily baby artichoke leaves with two slices of fried (meyer?) lemon on top. Our waiter was precise but seemed tired and spread thin between his tables. Overall just meh.
South End was recommended by a family member as their favorite in New Canaan. Good choice! Super creative menu plus specials. Lots of good choices to pick from. Had the Manhattan Clam Chowder from the specials....really tasty! Then had veal chop milanese for my main and it was even better. Great piece of veal to start with, pounded and lightly breaded, on the bone, with really fresh greens and thin sliced fresh mozzarella. So good! Great glass of wine from Airfield Estates in Washington to match up perfectly with the food. Already can't wait to go back!
Excellent food all around. Meatballs out of this world.
Great food and cocktails. Service was good and ambience was nice. (chic/casual) One of the best places to grab a bite in New Canaan.
Mediocre and over priced. Not sure why this restaurant has so many five star review.
Decent but overly expensive food. Noise level is unacceptable, and the restaurant made it worse with a pounding music soundtrack throughout the dinner. I could not wait to get out of the restaurant. There are so many other good Fairfield County restaurants with reasonable noise levels that I cannot imagine going back to this one.
Went there for New Year's Eve. Food and service were both adequate but nothing great that would inspire me to go back there again especially with so many other great restaurants in town.
From the time we got the bread to the end of dessert the quality of the ingredients served at this nice, casual place was extraordinary. I wish I could have the bread and butter again right now. The Cesar Salad (perfect for 2) is made with sliced fresh anchovy filets. Superb. I had the veal Milanese, which was served with a big salad on top. Great version of the classic. My wife had the Cod served chowder style, which was truly wonderful as well. The flavor was that of a great chowder with a seared medallion of cod on top. I went for a simple vanilla ice cream for dessert with chocolate sauce, which was nice on our full bellies. The wine list is nice and varied with a price range from moderate to a bit on the stratospheric side. They pour some very nice stuff by the glass as well.
One of the best meals we have had in the area!
We met our friends for dinner here. Awesome scene, great Christmas decorations, great menu, DELICIOUS food.
Danny's clams is a seasonal favorite. Strip steak was outstanding as always. Service was top notch.
It was fine
Everything we ordered was DELICIOUS and the service was great. It's a really nice atmosphere - we were in a small back room that felt very cozy. One of the walls of the room was a wine "cellar" for lack of a better word, which made it feel more open, but also like a fun private wine room. Overall, a very nice meal.
Outstanding brunch. I ordered the chic ken sandwich with bbq chips and was not disappointed.
The dessert I had tasted like a warm heath bar with toffee and ice-cream. Four spoons please!
Take your friends.
I really like the vibe at South End. It's warm, inviting and you can have a conversation. The food is excellent.
I had a lovely dinner at South End. It's an interesting combination because, on one hand, the food is well executed and elevated, but on the other, it has a more casually elegant vibe than other fine dining restaurants. They have an abundant wine list, and although their tap and bottled beer selection is not as voluminous, it is well curated, diverse, and there is no shortage of very good options.
The food is interesting, too. There are Italian elements, like homemade pasta, but I wouldn't call it an Italian restaurant. Overall, the menu is seemed like new American, offering a wide selection of small and large plates. I sampled quite a few item. The BBQ Octopus was perfectly cooked, but I questioned its pairing with a forceful sausage. The saltiness the meat gave was excellent, but I wondered if its flavor was too strong against the delicate octopus. It was still delicious.
I also tried the fried artichokes, which were splendid. They were lovely and crispy, but still soft, yielding, and bursting with the earthly flavor you'd expect from the vegetable.
For a main, I had a fabulous pork chop with spicy peppers. The pork itself was exceptional, exquisitely marbled and cooked to a delicate rosy pink hue. The preparation balanced the meat with salt, spice, and a vinegary bite that kept me coming back.
The only dish I thought was less-than-excellent was a tagliatelle ragu. The pasta was simply over cooked. The noodles were too soft, a few minutes passed al dente. They fell apart when twisted on a fork. The ragu was still tasted wonderful, but the pasta itself was a miss.
The service was pleasantly attentive and not overbearing, and I would gladly return to South End. I have a sneaky feeling that the pasta would be top-notch like everything else was if I return.
Great tasting freshly cooked food. Good attentive service.
This was our second visit after being so impressed last time! On a positive note, the food was just as good. On a negative note, the service was NOT good at all. The waitress was friendly but overall not the best as she rarely checked in with us at all. If we wanted anything we had to flag her down or ask that someone get her. If it had not been for the busboys, we would have had horrible service. In honesty, I think she was clueless that she didn't provide decent service but we did cut back our normal 20% tip due to her lack of attention.
Food is always excellent, although as someone who goes there a lot, I would love it if there were more changes. Had a new waiter this time and he was outstanding. Very friendly and helpful.
Our server was most attentive - there when needed, quick to respond to requests and sensitive enough to allow us to enjoy (immensely!) our very fine meal. Yes, would return when the occasion allows.
I love this restaurant. Good food good service. Easy to park. My go to place!
Made reservation and noted our anniversary. Arrived and hostess, dressed in leggings and a jeans jacket, made no mention of it. We asked to sit in a booth. She initially said no. When I pressed as to why, she then allowed us to sit. Waiter seemed distant and not happy to be there. My wife’s glass of red wine was warm. Waiter came by and asked how our main courses were. Since he asked I told him that the chicken saltimboca was not good. He thanked me for being honest and walked away.
Our desert came we told the waiter about our disappointment Re our anniversary and that we were not happy about many things. He said he would go talk to the manager. Manager never came over. Never offered apology. We got the check. We paid and left. We will not return. Sad.
Food was great. Fried artichokes and garlic aioli with a hit of lemon was amazing, the burrata with shaved asparagus and prosciutto hit the spot.
The inside dining is very noisy. We were lucky and could sit outside. The food is very tasty and creative. The service was attentive enough but I had to search out the waitress once. I think the prices are 15-20% higher than I would like.
food, service, amazing. can't wait to go back. we needed a last minute dinner out on Saturday night, recently moved to the area. It was terrific.
Not boring at all. Great ambiance. Also, our server made us feel special by engaging with us with her fun attitude. I highly recommend the Prosciutto Wrapped Figs - so delicious!!!
I have been here before and the food was great. This last time - I left feeling sick. The Octopus had an ammonia taste and the brisket was horrible.
As a new resident of the area we have been trying a lot of new restaurants, overall we were pretty impressed with South End and it was the best of the establishments we have tried in New Canaan. Everything we ordered was perfectly prepared and we felt the portions were larger than we had anticipated. Highlight of the meal were the donuts at the end which were to die for. If I had to nitpick to find something negative it would be that the restaurant was very load due to the bar. If the restaurant did something to separate the bar space from the tables it would be a big improvement.
Had dinner here the other night with some relatives. Some very very minor little glitches occurred with your apps, they were OUTSTANDINGLY delicious nonetheless.......entrees......PERFECT, delicious and beautiful to look at as well! The staff handled our table like pros. The management was incredibly generous and offered us some dessert on the house for those minor glitches and the desserts were FABULOUS!! Thank you so much to the entire staff at South End for a wonderful family reunion. We had a great time and we will all be back very soon. O.....and the live music was great!!!
South End was a real surprise. Innovative menu. Incredibly creative. one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten in Signed Dick Morris
Excellent food and atmosphere! We will definitely be back.
