South City Kitchen Vinings Ratings and Reviews
Waitress tried too hard to be jovial and not hard enough paying attention to what people were ordering. We have gluten intolerance and normally SCK is great for celiacs...we asked the manager WHO DELIVERED THE FOOD if there was gluten in the dish...there were some chip-like things we didn't recognize, having had the dish before) -- he said "they're gluten free, just corn". I took a bite and they were good but I could tell immediately NOT gluten free. To my dismay, he returned a few minutes later to say that in fact the "corn chips" had gluten and he was mistaken. He said he'd have another one right away and apologized but offered no comp of any kind, like a dessert or a coffee as a "my apologies" afterward. Midtown location much better!!
I wish we lived closer by this gem - we would frequent it much more - but worth the 20+ mile drive. They have a very friendly and competent staff, both on the floor and in the kitchen. It's fun watching the cooks and chef make their magic, as well as having an upbeat staff to make sure the food gets to you piping hot. All round it was a fantastic evening with some outstanding menu items I've never seen or tasted before.
Excellent - so many tempting choices on the menu, the decision was difficult. After narrowing it down to 3, the server helped me pick the pork shank/cheddar grits - OUT OF THIS WORLD. Pork was deeply flavored, and seriously almost as tender as the grits. This was my first visit, and without question, I will be back.
Wonderful food...service was fine except we waited way too long at the table for the intial "greeting." Then we waited and waited for our drinks which finally arrived after the appetizer. Water should have been poured upon being seated...they seemed short of staff. Otherwise fabulous, delicious and enjoyable evening.
As a long-time (7 year) regular at South City Kitchen midtown, I decided to try the Vinings location for Sunday Brunch. With reservation in hand I arrived on time to find the restaurant less than a quarter filled...first sign this experience might not be what I had hoped. Our wait-person, Jessica, was prompt and friendly but conveyed a perceived attitude she'd rather be somewhere else. The food was quality was average. I ordered simple pancakes and turkey sausage and my guest had the traditional breakfast with grits and bacon. The pancakes were fair but the turkey sausage was under-cooked. My guest's portion size was very small and placed on an enormous plate with the applewood smoke bacon was folded in half. Very poor PRESENTATION.
My waitress rolled her eyes when we chose to pay with several debit cards. Wewere a large group and initially attended for my mother's birthday. Mind you this is the kind of restaurant you get little for so much. In other words, thy are more worried about presentation than filling my tummy! And I was starving! Overall, very romantic atmosphere. I would go back on a date. Brunch? With family? Not so much.
I went with a group of three other girls and overall we had a good time. We had a great waitress, Linda, who made excellent wine recommendations. She was also very friendly and attentive. We ordered two fried green tomatoe appetizers to share. This is one my favorites so I order it at every restaurant I visit if it's on the menu. I was a little disappointed with these because they were fried a bit too long and filled with goat cheese which over powered the taste of the tomatoe. We then moved to the entrees. Two of my girlfriends ordered shrimp and grits which they loved! Another had the crab cakes and a small field green salad which she enjoyed. I ordered the South Cobb Salad and was again disappointed with the taste of the greens.
We dined there on a Monday evening when the restaurant was pretty quiet. Both of us had the shrimp & grits and thought the dish was excellent. I had the she crab soup...deliciously rich and tasty. Our server was wonderful, courteous and responsive without being overly attentive. The bill was reasonable. A good choice in my book.
I am a Californian that was in the area on business. I was told by a collegue that I HAD to go to SCK for fried chicken and great southern food. It definatley met my expectations and our server exceeded my expectations. The chicken was crispy, yet not greasy and the it was tender and cooked perfectly.I frequent the ATL area a few times a year and will be sure to come by again!
We decided to go here for a 9:30 pm New Years Eve dinner. Had been there in the past for NYE so we figured it would be a good choice. This year, they had a fixed price menu in place and refused to let you order from the regular menu. Fried green tomato appetizer was average and a bit greasy. Since I don't eat meat, they only had one vegetarian option, the veggie plate, which they ran out of brussel sprouts so we ended up eating a large helping of collard greens, a sweet potato mash and what I think was polenta. Very uninspiring. With two (2) draft miller lite beers the check with tip was $103.98, an incredibly expensive dinner for basically $5 dollars worth of veggies.
New Year's Eve dinner was very good. Dessert was disappointing. The restaurant offered a 3 course price fix meal which included many entrees and appetizers that you can typically get off of the regular menu. We thought the price fix was a little high since you could get most of the combinations offered for less than $39.95 on a regular day and the desserts didn't warrant a premium price.
Service was above expectations! Food was wonderful though beet salad a little too sweet. All recommendations were fantastic. Everyone in our party of four was pleased with their food choices. Appetizer portions are very generous. Ambience isn't exceptional - esPecially if you sit looking out on the tented area ...
The actual restaurant has a nice interior and feel. The food was good. The service staff was friendly, but not as attentive as I would have hoped. It was my 3rd wedding anniversary which I noted on open table. There was no recognition of this from any service staff or manager in the restaurant. I felt they really dropped the ball in that aspect. Also, the server didn't really describe anything for us in the menu. For a place that wants to charge the amount they do for food and alcohol, the service should be on the same level. Maybe it was an off-night.
