South has wonderful specialty cocktails and is a perfect spot to grab a bite before a show at the SF Jazz Center. We've been here twice before shows in the last month and my only suggestion is that they could use an other person at the front of the house to guide people during their busy periods before the shows. We've had really good service both times we've eaten here. The food was excellent. The salad with beets and pumpkin seeds was especially delicious. and we also really enjoyed the tostada.

Just Fair.

This was my first time eating there, and it was just fair. Although the service was good, the food was not impressive. I do not plan to return.

Great place to eat before a jazz event. Friendly, skilled bartenders and wait staff. One can eat, have a drink, and discuss music with other patrons and the staff... a perfect complement to an outstanding music venue!

We arrived at 5:30, which is when they open. They weren't ready for business yet and we waited a few minutes in the SFJazz lobby until they got their act together. Not a major issue but, combined with other shortcomings noted below it made for a less than satisfactory dining experience.

The wine list is very limited and they didn't have the wine we ordered. We ordered an assortment of tapas. They were mediocre at best. It was almost impossible to cut the sopa with a dinner fork. I was tempted to ask for a steak knife.

We won't be back.

Food very good, but totally overpriced. Limited menu. Waitress trying too hard to earn a tip.

South is a hidden gem. It is in SFJazz building. You can fine dine whether you attend a performance or not. It's a Charles Phan (Slanted Door) different culinary taste!

South is convenient if you are attending a concert at SFJazz. The food selections are limited, the servings are very small, which means you need to order several in order to actually have a full meal. Not enough bang for your buck.

It was our first time dining at the restaurant, as we were going to a concert at SF Jazz. We arrived early for our reservation - the first customers, yet the staff put us at a table right by the open kitchen so our conversation was marred by foot traffic and noise. The waiter was enthusiastic but my husband found the sopes practically inedible although he loved the guacamole. My goat cheese salad was sparse, especially for the price, and my first glass of wine was 1/2 the size of the second glass. While it made dinner before the show easy, we felt it was overpriced.

You are silly not to eat here before or after a SF Jazz Center concert. Food is interesting take on mexican and good. Cocktails inventive and service friendly and helpful

I brought a large and chaotic group of co-workers here for a pre-show meal. The server could not have been more accommodating and gracious. The drinks were powerful and delicious. The Puerco was as tender and flavorful as ever. Will be back without a doubt.

dinner at south was disappointing. the food is well-prepared, but the portions are remarkably small and really overpriced. that certainly goes for the wine as well. san francisco has much better offers in the restaurant field

The food was innovative AND tasty, good steady service, and the ambience and location are perfect for pre-performance dining. Skipping distance from SF Symphony, so made for a pleasant, unrushed evening. Loved it!

We love the jazz center and going to early dinner at South and then just walking into the show makes for most pleasant evening out. The decor is simple and modern. The food is tasty and creative. Lovely salads, complex flavors like their duck leg in mole sauce, tender pork belly, or tasty fish and seafood preparations. The waitstaff is accommodating and gracious without being intrusive. There is a full bar and cup holders at your seat inside the center to
keep the vibe going. An added advantage of the early dinner plan is that at six the parking is free and reasonably available. South stays open till late so you can stop in after the show for dessert or a nightcap. And if you have driven in from the 'burbs, and you skip dessert, you can be home by ten.

The service was very good, and the food comes quickly, which is important when you're going to a concert. But this comes with a big down side. Bland, boring and small dishes, none of which lived up to their tasty descriptions. We had five - the grapefruit/beet salad, empanadas, sopes, posole, and pork. The prices are very high for what you get. Would love to have a good pre-show place to dine, but this is not it.

We stopped here to eat before our jazz show, and were first pleased that they held our reservation even though we were 1/2 hour late. They serve small tasty portions of south-west inspired food that was quite enjoyable. Since the plates are quite small it is a little expensive, but this is a good way to start an evening at the jazz center, without having to rush from one place to another.

We went for dinner before Tuck & Patti jazz show. We each had a fish entree, and split orders of jasmine rice. Dilicious food, prompt seating and stellar service. My gin martini was great; waiter comped my Sauvignon blanc to take into the show, because after ordering a vodka drink, my friend decided not to drink.
The location, service, selections were impeccable, and the cost was appropriate.

Went to the Tuck & Patti concert and it was nice to have a very good restaurant in the same building and easy parking nearby.

The bartender started us off well with delicious specialty cocktails. (I recommend the Dorado Street Guzzler.) Our enthusiastic and attentive server, Sky, explained the menu and described dishes helpfully. We were delighted to taste authentic--and not too fiery--cuisine from Central Mexico on offer. Everything we tried was top notch. Next time we'll save room for dessert! The personable proprietor, Moises, was happy to chat with us and make us feel welcome. Prices are moderate for the Hayes Valley neighborhood and the quality of the cooking. A welcome addition to the Opera House/Davies Hall area food options.

We loved South before, but now it's even better with the Mexican dishes and great (often spicy) cocktails. Really delicious - we had the duck, the sea bass, the sopes, and the salad - and all of it was great, served quickly enough to make sure we got to the concert, but well paced and fun! Highly recommend...

Three of us purchased a number of plates and none disappointed...tostadas, some meatballs, beet salad, guacamole but we ate too much! I didn't care for my hibiscus vodka cocktail..next time would get the tequila sizzle. One of us particularly enjoyed the chocolate mousse-like dessert and the coffee is good there. Service was good.

Concert goers deserve a better restaurant than South. Why don't you allow Charles Phan to do what he does best rather than what he is attempting to do now. Big mistake. I would never make another trip there. Would prefer to dine at Jardiniere before a concert and then walk over to the performance.
This cafeteria approach to food does not cut it.

Sitting at table enjoying tequila 'swizzle' while watching people running from downpour, then looking thru more plate glass watching the lively 'lobby scene' and thankful we had seat-assigned tix in hand with no need to go out into the rain again. That's when I got the Lincoln Center feeling. Food was excellent. Think Mehicano Tapas. At the end they ask if you want to add a drink in go-cup to bring to concert. They don't even have that, at L.C.! Better here!

Last ate at South at SF Jazz quite a while ago, just a couple of weeks after it changed to its current South of the Border menu. Never a good idea to go too soon -- let 'em get the wrinkles out. This time was sooo much better. Interesting variety and flavors, some exotic, some savory, others nice and spicy (could be a bit spicier for my taste). My one quibble is with masa-based appetizers, which are on the tough side. Masa shouldn't get tough when it's cooked up -- doesn't seem to be like that in Mexico. Wine selection acceptable, ambience sleek but on the noisy side (that's SF for you!), service excellent. South at SF Jazz is a fine choice for dinner before a concert at SF Jazz. And, of course, by far the most convenient of the several good restaurants in the 'hood.

South did not meet our expectations. Dinner for four, including tip, was $280. That's what you pay for a first class dining experience. This definitely was not first class.

The service was excellent but the food was lacking: the pork dish was dry, fish was insipid, rice and beans so-so. Guacamole was yummy and the bar tender was gracious in letting us taste several wines before buying a bottle.

We won't be back.

As first-timers to this restaurant and to the SF Jazz Center, we are delighted we discovered both! We traveled via BART to/from the East Bay and had no car-parking worries nor did we have to rush to get from dinner to the theatre. The cocktails were really good and the entire meal delicious -- even the dessert. I appreciated the tasty "small plates" so that we were not too full to enjoy the rest of our evening.

I hadn't realized that South had changed their menu to Mexican tapas. The food just isn't as delicious and satisfying as it was, and I thought the value was pretty disappointing. At least when I spent a little more money on prior visits I was eating delicious comfort food that would really fill you up. I thought the spare rib, however, had excellent flavor! But there wasn't anything else of note.
