We had the Omakase which is consisted of 11 small dishes and 13 pieces of sushi. The food was top notch, esp those small dishes which were uniquely flavored, well balanced and beautifully presented. Particularly I loved all uni creations. However, the entire dinner lasted over 4 hours; too much wait time between those small dishes which made us somewhat lose appetite and we felt like at the end of dining just couldn't wait to wrap up and leave, instead of enjoying the whole dining experience. The bill was $520 for2 --the food alone was amazing and worth the visit, but their lack of service mind (the waitresses were not too friendly and too slow food service) definitely diminishes the entire dining experience there.
Definitely very outstanding restaurant which worths 2 Michelin start. And I'm so disappointed that Soto is going to close in December 10 2016, despite I didn't come ny that often, Soto was always a must when I visited ny. Sushi was not outstanding, but still very good tbh.
This was our first visit to the restaurant and will certainly be our last even though they are closing on Dec 10. The food is actually quite good with good quality sashimi and sushi but the service was just unacceptable. We wanted to order our sashimi and starters first before hot food and sushi's but was told numerous times this is not how it works and I must order everything at once. Then I asked whether it is at least possible for the hot food come out after the sashimi but was told it was not within their control. After we had our sushi we wanted to order some additional sushi but was given attitude by the waitress who was in a bad mood the moment we walked in. She tried to dissuade us from ordering by saying it would take a very long time. After the meal she was keen to kick us out by hurrying us with ordering dessert or getting the bill even though there were other diners that came before us. There are so many good sushi restaurants in NYC and this is certainly no way to retain your customers. Call me traditional but when we walked in to the restaurant there was no traditional welcome by the chef or the staff and certainly no thank you when we got up to leave. Just not a very pleasant experience as the chef never took the time to make guests welcome even though we were sitting at the sushi counter. Finally, this restaurant also serve a lot of fusion creations which are good but definitely not something you would find in good sushi restaurant in Japan or even in NYC. Overall, quite disappointed.
Terrible. Upon entering, we were never acknowledged by anyone in the staff. We stood in front of the restaurant for 5 minutes before deciding to step out and jump over to DOMODOMO where we had a fabulous experience. I would stray away from Soto.
The best uni I've ever tasted and fantastic sashimi. Good selection of sake. Quiet ambiance and extremely helpful wait staff.
I have a few of warnings. The service takes a very long time. If you have a reservation for when the restaurant opens (6:15), you won't even receive a menu until around 6:30, and the chefs don't begin filling orders until around 7pm. If you're arriving when it opens, be aware you have a lot of time to kill. The portions are extremely small and it will probably be best to order around three entrees (four if an entree you've selected is small), so meals are more expensive than they seem if you look at the menu.
It's expensive, but in my opinion, worth it for a special occasion.
Food - good. Nothing particularly mindblowing but it was a solid omakase, and appreciated the blend of prepared dishes as well as sushi.
Service - not so much. Came in here with a couple friends at 6:30pm for the omakase and we were told that the meal would be 2-2.5 hours with ~10 prepared dishes and ~10 pieces of sushi, were we OK with that? Absolutely, sounds great. Ordered a bottle of sake, we were on our way... The meal ended up lasting 3.5 hours, with 15-20 minute intervals between a few of the dishes. The sushi (which was the second half of the meal) came out very quickly, but for whatever reason the prepared dishes took an eternity to prepare. The restaurant was ~70-80% empty when we began given it was so early so it's a bit confusing what the issue was. The first and second time it wasn't that big of a deal but as it persisted throughout the meal, we found ourselves trying to peer over the counter to see what was going on. The final kicker for me was when we were given our check, our waitress told us there was a reservation waiting, effectively kicking us out. I generally have no problem with this if I'm with friends clearly overstaying a reasonable period of time, but when the duration of the meal was completely at fault of the service and then we're basically told to please leave now, that's frankly unbelievable.

I've read some criticism of Soto for being slow. This restaurant defines quality and pride in the selection and presentation of the amazing and delicate fish that melts in your mouth. This takes time and if you can breath between bites you should appreciate it. If you're on a tight timeline and want a California roll, go elsewhere. If you want to savor sushi/sashimi at its finest, this is your place.
Amazing food but atrocious service experience. The city sanitation inspectors came in the night that I dined there which totally interrupted the flow of food and service. I've been at nice restaurants during sanitation inspections and have seen other restaurants handle it much better so that it didn't interfere with diners experiences. I was dining solo and each of my 3 appetizers came out 25 minutes apart, and then I waited 50+ MINUTES for my sushi to come out. All they did was give me cold edamame (after 40 minutes) and a tiny glass of sake. Considering the price you pay to eat there, it should not have been such a terrible experience. They should have sent out a hot plate of food from the kitchen or at least comp'ed part of my meal. $200 and 2.5 hours that I won't get back. Expected much more of a positive experience from a Michelin starred restaurant. But at least the food WAS super delicious.
The night we went to Soto the "hot kitchen" was closed, which meant that no cooked dishes were available -- only sushi. This was a disappointment, but it was made much worse by how slow the service was -- perhaps because the sushi chefs were overwhelmed. Dinner took more than three hours, a glacial pace. The items we ordered were all delicious, but overall the experience was not great because of the limited menu and extremely slow service.
If you like interesting combinations of fresh raw fish and have a weakness for uni, you have chosen the right place to dine. The entrance to Soto is plain and beautifully understated. What you see are clean lines of light wood and glass, leading into a minimalistic contemporary small space. The perfect invitation for someone like me...
The food is clean and fresh. We chose about six prepared dishes that were all very tasty. I particularly loved the uni cocktail and the geoduck., and then we ordered three rolls that consisted of more traditional basic sushi rolls. The only dessert offered was a very nice assortment of mochi ice cream, which was fine.
Our server, Daisy was very helpful as she guided us through the menu and made some very good recommendations. The only suggestion I did not enjoy was the fluke in ponzu sauce. All in all we were well received and would definitely return.
Some of the world's best sushi in an uninteresting but upscale venue with mediocre service. Only worth the price if you really love and are thoroughly familiar with sushi, but if you are, go for it. The dishes are absolutely beautifully prepared and the fish, rice and sauces are all beyond excellent.
The food was exceptional and the Omakase food portion was quite gracious. The ambience is more humble which is great - really reflective of a true Japanese dining experience. However I thought the service could be better. The energy level was a bit low and for the experience you are expecting with a 2 michelin star restaurant, the service was just not at par. Still wonderful experience though!
I had wanted to try Soto for a long time because it is famous for its uni specialties, and uni is a favorite. Everything we tasted was superb. The food is fresh and inventive- yet entirely authentic. Each dish was surpassed by the next! Well worth the price and the Michelin stars!
The staff suggestions were wonderful, and the night was a perfect celebration. Soto is my new favorite restaurant! Thank you Soto for a memorable night!
Soto's sashimi and sushi are of the highest quality, to be savored and in the case of the sashimi, lingered over. The fish is remarkable, as it has been ever since the restaurant opened. The teriyaki from the kitchen is excellent. Ingredients are absolutely top. Where Tokyo Michelin starred restaurants are often far too self-consciously 'fine dining' or preoccupied with opening in Roppongi, cultivating tourists etc., Soto is simply the real thing. To be treasured.
Every time I come here I'm delighted by the freshness of the fish and seafood. All their dishes prepared with fresh uni are amazing. In fact, all the dishes are well executed, attractive and original. The good service and very serious (deadpan) sushi bar chefs give the place a nice and quiet ambiance.
Dissapointed that they no longer have the sushi omakase which was the whole reason I went there. Fish quality was good but nigiri pieces were pretty basic. Nothing out of the ordinary. Also very disappointed that they didnt have business cards. You're a two star michelin restaurant, come on. No excuse.
Es incomprensible que este restaurante tenga 2 estrellas michelin. La comida no está mal pero ni las instalaciones del local ni el servicio están a la altura. Atención muy fría y descortés tiempos de espera entre los platos de más de 30 minutos..en conclusión un desastre.
I chose this restaurant because it has two Michelin stars. Also because it didn't make you buy a pre fix menu. So there we went to start my birthday celebration.
We first liked the 'mysteriousness of the place since it doesn't have a sign outside. That make us feel like if we where entering a very exclusive/just by invitation kind of place. The tables are all together, which we usually do not like, but the quite ambiance was not affected by it.
The waitress was able to answer all our questions about the menu and made very assertive suggestions.
All the food was very delectable and we could taste that the ingredients were fresh. The presentation was not impressive at all. The service was good, not necessarily great but satisfactory.
Food was incredible, but it took forever and the waitstaff was terrible. 3h10m for the omakase. Sake bottle and glass sat empty for over an hour, not exaggerating. The place has way, way too many seats for a two-Michelin-star restaurant. The chef was so overwhelmed that he started giving me two pieces of nigiri at a time (then I waited 12-25 minutes for my next course). Some of the fish was cold, not body temperature as it should be. Ambiance sucked. If you're expecting a small, quiet restaurant with lots of wood paneling and typical Japanese decor, think again. This place is solid white plastic.
Amazing food, everything else was hugely disappointing for a $220 omakase.
