Sonsie - Boston Ratings and Reviews
I reserved for Sunday brunch at 1 pm but they were not ready until 1:30 pm because the people who were at our tables did not get up(?). It looked like other people were having same problem. It was way too crowded with all those tables filled up.. It didn't take long for us to order because we knew what we wanted but we waited almost an hour for our food. Our waitress did not even notify us that it will take that long. Eventually we were able to eat at 2:30pm, starving. It was worst service I ever received. The food was okay, but I will not be revisiting if it's for brunch.
There is a new chef and the food is not nearly as good as it was. The steak was charred black, the fish was cold, the dessert tasted like it had gone sour... they also removed the best item from the previous menu- Mee Krob. After being a loyal Sonsie fan for over 15 years, I won’t be going back.
The atmosphere is nice, tables far enough apart to have intimate conversations. Service is appropriately attentive. There is funky art on the walls that add to the upscale but still casual ambiance. Food is relatively traditional but prepared in interesting and tasty ways.
My wife and I have gone to Sonsie number of times to celebrate and have never been disappointed. Tonight we had a wedge salad, kale salad, sirloin steak, and the handmade papardelle. All were very tasty and good sized portions. We finished the evening with the excellent warm bread pudding. Our glasses were never empty and all the staff were very friendly.
We went after the Boston Pops concert and walked through the icy wind there. It was a very warm and cozy atmosphere and nicely decorated in Christmas spirit. Good background music, not too loud, and food was excellent. Only thing a little overdone was that buzz boys refilled water basically after every zip ...it became a mixture of annoying and amusing. Overall a great evening and much recommended!!
I’m sorry and I usually do not write many reviews, or in those case negative ones but I was actually appalled at our experience yesterday at Sonsie for Brunch. While I am aware they recently changed chefs, the simple false advertising of their menu items was absolutely absurd. Two of our group members ordered the spinach frittata which was supposed to come with goat cheese and simply did not. On the other hand, my girlfriend ordered the short rib hash which came with something that more resembled flank steak than short rib. Members of their staff also continuously bumped into me while dining as they tried to add chairs to a table located behind me. Very disappointed.
Our dining experience would only have been made better by a more relaxing music selection during the early dinner hours.
Our reservation was for 6 and for the first hour the music was great and the ambience was relaxing and seasonal...BUT at about 7 it seemed the music selection became very techno pop which did not make for a very relaxing meal consumption or conservation background.
Food was good as was the service - if only the music might have been more enjoyable.
I searched for a casual spot with high rating and Sonsie popped up. It didn’t disappoint. The food menu was interesting and I would have liked to try the pizza, which looked amazing. The prices were reasonable for Back Bay. The one disappointment was their draft options. I stuck with cans but would have preferred draft beer. Overall 👍🏼👍🏼.
I used to go there regularly but I have moved. I was excited to go back there but ended with a huge disappointment. Food was not good so was service. Their chowder was lukewarm and tasteless with unpleasant fish smell. he waiter brought our check as soon as we finished the meal. He even did not ask if we would like to have coffee or desert. The restaurant was nowhere near to be called full.
They brought me the wrong food twice. First time, okay, I get it, you just mixed up the tables. Second time, brought me the wrong pizza altogether.
On top of that, waiter was non-existent most of the night. It took over an hour for our entrees to show up because they were backed up making pizzas (they said they had 87 orders for pizza), and the waiter never came over to ask if we wanted another drink during the entire time between ordering our meal and it actually showing up. We had to flag down the waiter in order to request a bottle of wine with the main course. We sat down to our table at 7:20, ordered meals at 7:35, and received our main course around 8:50.
The food overall is very good here, and I’ve never experienced this problem before. However, this was a miserable dining experience. Certainly will reconsider whether I want to go back here, because the time is not worth the taste.
The food and waitstaff were excellent. One complaint though- there are too many tables crammed into a small space. It was so crowded on Saturday at lunch time that our waiter could barely make it to our table. Our table was bumped and my drink spilled all over. The staff was apologetic, and gave us free lattes. That was nice, but I am not sure I would want to go back at such a busy time. Difficult to have a conversation.
Excellent experience on an early Thursday evening business dinner. Sonsie provided friendly and well-paced service, interestingly varied menu, manageable wine list, and a comfortable ambience. There was also a 'whiskey tasting' which my business partners (one from Edinburgh) especially enjoyed. I even recommended to my boss!
While we enjoyed our food at Sonsie, there were some definite issues with the service. Our waiter took an incredibly long time to take orders for both dinner and dessert, and failed to tell our party that they were out of a number of menu items (coincidentally, several of the items we had decided to order while waiting 20 minutes for our waiter to take our orders). This is not good service. Additionally, we were surrounded by a number of huge parties sitting at large tables and behaving incredibly rudely - crawling under tables, standing on chairs, shouting, etc. Not only did the waitstaff not attend to this problem, they actually seemed very friendly with the rude parties and spent quite a bit of time standing there chatting with the people milling about the dining area as though it were a bar. I've had good experiences at Sonsie before, but would hesitate to go back after the subpar service and ambiance at my last visit.
Food was excellent but wait time between ordering ... receiving meals ... ordering coffee ... to receiving the check was way too long. Had a 6:00 seating for 6 received meal at 7:30. We left the restaurant at 9:30 exhausted.
Pizza did not match description - tasted like tinned tomato paste smeared on pizza crust with one speck of basil.
Server did not bring bread for the table
Forgot to serve beer when other drinks were delivered
Overpriced and very noisy
Our international group of business executives with varying dietary restrictions (gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, shellfish allergy) loved this place! It not only had great options for everyone's food fancy but our waiter was lots of fun. Just what we needed after being cooped up in a conference room all day!
